A Scot here. Glad to report that for us, the GL sound comes completely naturally - no practice required. Your video confirmed that my intuitive way of pronouncing this was correct. Really enjoying these pronunciation videos - you are more rigorous and correct than many other channels who tackle this subject.

Thank you so much for the video! I got to say, first time when I read "ultimate" in the name of the video I said "that must be an exageration". I've been looking for youtube videos to make this sound and, no doubts, this is the best so far. I loved the technique and the exercises on the video, I'm gonna include them on my daily routine to unlock this beautiful and tricky sound. Grazie mille, insegnante!

Ciao! Thank you for your comment. Italian is a very difficult language! Do not be discouraged! My suggestions here would be that if you are living in Italy try to spark a conversation whenever you can... for example if you have a local bar that you like to go to (maybe for a nice coffee or cappuccino) start speaking to the bar tender. Ask simple things, they will reply and they will start to ask A LOT of things about you! :) we Italians are curious! :) If you don't understand something say "Scusi, può ripetere piano? Non ho capito" (Sorry, can you repeat slowly? I didn't understand). Same with your neighbor... find a nice one and start speaking. Surround yourself with Italian speakers and it will be easier. If you want to I also offer online tutoring where I focus on conversations. If you are interested in that let me know and I will give you more details privately. I will leave you my email address giulia@italianlanguagehub.com. Do not give up! Take it slowly and you will learn Italian! :) ciao!

Thank you for the video. I am still having a bit of doubts whether I'm getting it right. Is it correct to try to pronounce LL but with the middle of the tongue touching the palate rather than the tip?

Is your jaw supposed to come forward to get the middle of your tongue to the pallet when saying gl?
@italianlanguagehub2 жыл бұрын
Ciao Josh! Nope, your jaw stays in place. When you are saying the word "aglio" you can practice this by simply opening and closing your mouth keeping your jaw in the same position.
@Javaman92 Жыл бұрын
Well, either I am saying it correctly from the start, or I just can't hear the sound that is supposed to be so hard. I spoke along with you on this but... I just can't hear what this gl sound is unless it is what I am saying.
@italianlanguagehub Жыл бұрын
Ciao! It’s super difficult to master the GLI sound 😵💫 especially for English speakers! I would like to suggest that you also try doing this: say the word “yellow” and focus on the “y” part… just the little beginning… close your eyes and feel where your tongue is and the shape of your mouth. (The tongue should be closed and touching the palate at back of the mouth)…When you got that down try to slightly change the position of the tongue… say the L (Elle) and when you have that down make the tongue touch the palate (in the top middle section). It’s now easy at all I completely understand but trust me the more you practice the easier it will get! I hope this helps you!

So, basically, it's љ? L snd j as a single sound?
@italianlanguagehub5 ай бұрын
Ciao! I researched the sound љ and it is basically it! Can I ask you what your mother tongue language is?
@ljubodraggrujic48725 ай бұрын
@@italianlanguagehub It's Serbian. The first sound in my name is that Љ / Lj so I am interested in the similar (or the same sound) gli in Italian. In truth, sometimes it sounds perfectly the same as Љ but sometimes it doesn't. I don't speak Italian but I do understand a fair bit of it and the gli pronunciation is really a mistery to me.

@@italianlanguagehubAlso is it like double LL in Spanish?
@italianlanguagehub6 ай бұрын
Ciao! Not really, the Spanish sound is a bit different it has a vowel sound at the beginning that the Italian sound doesn’t have. The L is merged in the sound. If you say the word “yellow” it’s very similar to the “y” sound at the beginning ☺️
@Ponkelina11 ай бұрын
I'm doing it but it sounds too wet and lispy in the roof of my mouth
@italianlanguagehub11 ай бұрын
It’s strange at first if it’s now a sound that you are used to saying! It will get better! ☺️
@denischarette-de3te Жыл бұрын
I think its sound is not only ``L`` and I think not only ``Y``. It is rather ``LY`` ? If it were only ``Y`` like in ``yellow``, it would be very easy. Also, except in the word ``gli``, the ``i`` is not pronouced if I`m not mistaken.
@italianlanguagehub Жыл бұрын
Ciao! The sound “yellow” (the begging is similar)! So thank you for sharing this! I confirm that with gli you have to say the “i” 😊
@JohnnyWalkerBlack14211 ай бұрын
It's closest to the Y in English. Just pronounced harder
@italianlanguagehub11 ай бұрын
Yeah… I would say that the word yellow (the first sound) is close…

No matter who says it, it sounds to me like almost exactly like the English "y" sound with a devoiced "l" before it. I honestly hear almost no "l" sound and almost all "y".

The sound (if you want to compare it to an English sound) is similar to the first sound of the word “yellow”… try thinking of that as you say GLI ☺️

I don't really hear a difference between your made-up "lli" words and the "gli" words :( To me they are somehow both "ly". So I don't know how to get from the middle part of the video to the end excerise wise...
@italianlanguagehub Жыл бұрын
Ciao! Thank you for your comment! I know it's a real struggle! Don't worry... I will try to help you here with this comment and think of a short or extra video with more exercises. I suggest that you focus on the position of your tongue in your mouth. If you are having a hard time hearing the sound this might help you more! Start with L (in Italian either the sound L or ELLE). Say it a couple of times over and over and feel exactly where the tip tongue hits the palate. Close your eyes and try to think of how the tongue is curves in your mouth. You should have the tip towards the front and the rest of the tongue is making a little curve underneath. When you have that add the I lli - The tip tongue will slowly move forward a bit. Now comes the hard part. Forget the sound, focus on the movement and shape of the tongue. Say L and then slide the tip of your tongue forward curving it underneath as if the tip want to go touch the bottom teeth. You will feel awkward doing this but it will help you! Keep making the L sound with the tongue in that position and slowly it will sound more and more like the GL. Try this and let me know if it helps! ciao!

the ULTIMATE proof that the g simply becomes silent. Also it could've been just one sentence, but nevermind
@italianlanguagehub Жыл бұрын
The G isn’t silents otherwise the sound would be with an L and that’s not the sound GLI that needs to be achieved with this video! ☺️
@Nicolaissimus Жыл бұрын
@@italianlanguagehub the point is, that you assert and repeat multiple times that "gli" should sound differently from "li", and then you proceed to pronounce it in an essentially indistinguishable way - your own words testify against your words XD I wouldn't argue that those two are not technically different, but I say that the difference seems so subttle that it gets lost due to a different tone, mood or accent of a speaker. Humans aren't machines. It's essentially the same sound, just maybe pronounced with a slightly different mood or accent.
@italianlanguagehub Жыл бұрын
Ciao! The sounds are different and if you listen closely and say the sound as you should you will also notice it too! If you say GLI and LI you are sayings to different things and the sound GLI as I say it is correct and different to LI. I understand that it’s not an easy sound! It’s hard to both listen to and say it. They Italian language has that sound and if a person is learning Italian and not saying GLI as I say it and as all the other teachers say it then more practice needs to be done. Listening and repeating is the key! ☺️ hope you will master it too! Ciao!
