In this episode of A Week On The Wrist, Danny takes a closer look at the IWC Portugieser Chronograph reference IW371605. How does this "dressy" chronograph fare in a more casual environment?
"This is actually my second go-around spending time with this watch, having previously gone Hands-On with it in April. Not much about my opinions have changed, but having now spent a week with it on my wrist, some of those opinions - or notions - have become more deeply entrenched in my psyche. During my week with this watch, I tried not to augment anything about my daily routine, just to see how the watch kept up - if it interfered in any way, and how (if at all) it improved anything I did. I am talking things as innocuous as brewing a pot of morning coffee, or the more active task of sitting down to play the guitar. It was my full intention to put this watch through its paces, but I will warn you - especially in these crazy times - I don't live the most extreme lifestyle. If you're hoping to hear stories about how this watch fares skydiving, or on the racetrack, you've come to the wrong place. "

I've always wanted a Portugeiser and as advised I went pre-owned. I feel I scored something good.I'm a bigger guy but my wrist is thin and I still think it's going to be perfect.

I prefer the green sunburst dial variation of this watch, the burgundy sunburst is gorgeous too. This one looks a bit too plain Jane for me. But that kind of understatement I understand is appealing to many.

I agree. I get it...this likely wont be a watch you would take in the water. But that said, I’d like to know it’s capable of handling it. In my opinion, NO watch should be less than 100m water resistant.

If IWC made smaller diameter Portugueser, is it still Portugueser? I think not. I tried this on and it was too big for my wrist and ended up getting the 150th anniversary Portofino.

The noise is from the ball bearings in the rotor axel. My omegas do the same thing and the new Rolex movements all make noise now too.

I have no problem with watches around 41-43mm, but this is a 41 that looks like a 46. And it has chopped 12 and 6 numerals. Pass.

With a bezel its a 39, lol. Maybe I don't or will ever have that sophisticated palate to appreciate the IWC aesthetic, it all seems just like any watch from Target, but with amazing mechanics, movement and WAY Way more expensive. 😁 Everyone has a their cup of tea, I guess.

Pre watch dealing HODINKEE would have said that a noisy rotor at this price range is a deal breaker. Now the biased opinion says meh not really a deal breaker if your iwc sounds like a $200 Seiko when you wear it.

at 3:33 ...It's called a Butterfly clasp and they use this type of clasp with a watch like this because unlike a traditional deployant it keeps the watch centered on the wrist for a consistently better look.

It only looks so big because the bezel is so thin/non existent. It’s 2mm smaller than my Sea Dweller, but looks bigger because it all dial, no bezel. If it had lume I’d love it.

I owned an IWC portofino and they also claimed it was their own movement, but it was a modified 7750. You have to be careful with them. It has to explicitly say manufacture.

“Quartz” is an electronic movement using a quartz crystal, circuit boards and a battery to power it. A mechanic movement is a purely mechanic machine; cogs, springs and all. No battery or electronics. An automatically wound mechanical movement (also simply called “automatic”) refers to the fact that the movement's spring is wound by a rotor weight that spins around as you move your watch/wrist (hence automatically wound when worn).

The movement is WAY too small for the case. Iwc has done a terrible job of hiding it with the enormously wide caseback bezel. I guess it's an upgrade ish from all those 7750s though

The proportions are not clownish off and it might be ok for some people. But ok is not great and the guy in the video would be better off wearing a watch on the 36mm spectrum. That‘s what I‘m talking about.
