My first watch, a gift from my maternal Grandparents, was a 37mm hand winding Vulcain Tachymetre with a Valjoux movement 52 years ago. Guess what? I still have it and it keeps perfect time.

As an owner of (the three dial) Sinn 356 since 2008, thank you for recognizing this nearly perfect watch. So overlooked by either it's brawnier brothers (the Sinn divers and larger chronos) or by its plainer sibling (the justly lauded but unjustly more famous) 556, my 356 has been rafting the Colorado river, to the top of almost 2 dozen 14,000 foot peaks (4267 meters and taller), used to time actual plane flights (ok, drone flights), used to time contractions, and been placed on a nice croc strap and worn in corporate boardrooms and to weddings. An overlooked, great watch for sure.

Bucherer bought Tourneau. And here we learn that Rolex owns Bucherer. So that explains why the local, former Tourneau store is now a boutique that only sells Rolex and Patek. When I visited, the Rolex staff made it clear that, within the store, Rolex and Patek had separate sales staffs.

I’m surprised the lack of videos and reviews on the 356. I bought an acrylic model with the day date and 3 subdials and it’s fantastic! It does wear a little thick but the acrylic model has a solid case back which wears closer to the wrist. They’re also the least expensive automatic chronograph from a reputable brand.

In the tapestry of time, Jaquet Droz stands as a forgotten gem, the second oldest active brand in watchmaking. Born from the vision of Pierre Jaquet-Droz in the Swiss Jura mountains, its journey is one of relentless pursuit of perfection. Crafting intricate timepieces and mesmerizing automata, Jaquet Droz captured the imagination of generations. Today, amidst the rush of modernity, its quiet elegance endures, a testament to timeless craftsmanship and innovation.

If you can get them cheap used or grey, these are really, really cool watches. I have tried them on and shopped them, but I was always too afraid to drop five figures on such an illiquid watch. If I had more money, or bigger gonads, I would have one. The dials can be insanely good. The one I wanted had a wood and mop combination that was painfully beautiful.

Many thanks for the Vulcain Cricket update. Yikes. They're still around. I first became aware of them in 1964 when I was seventeen and visiting Europe for the first (and, so far, only) time. (I purchased an Omega Seamaster in Zurich--still running.) The cricket looks about the same as I remember it...and surprisingly appealing. I like how the crown winds in both directions to accommodate the separate main and alarm springs. Oh, I guess we can do Amelia Earhart jokes now, at least until they find her plane, which, according to recent reports, seems imminent. Still can't do jokes about Lincoln's night out at Ford's Theater, though some have tried--unsuccessfully.

A strange pet-hate perhaps, but i couldn't wear the IWC here (and many others) - I just can't stand cut digits. Yes, proportionally the subdials are in the perfect spot...
