I'm a huge fan of the Jackbox series, and I could hardly wait to play the new Jackbox Party Pack 4! I also noticed lack of Jeckbox 4 review videos. This new pack sports 5.5 total games, with 1 returning game, and the 0.5 being a new mode for that game. Having tested out all the available games in the Jackbox Party Pack 4, I thought I'd share a review.

"The JBPP4 is the fourth in this storied party game franchise features Fibbage 3 and its new game mode, Fibbage: Enough About You; the twisted web game Survive the Internet; the dating contest Monster Seeking Monster; the deranged debate match Bracketeering; and the one-up art game Civic Doodle." Lets review them all!
The Jackbox Party Pack 4 includes:
------------------
Fibbage 3 (2-8 players)
The blanking fun sequel. Play all-new question types and the game mode--
Fibbage: Enough About You (3-8 players). Guess the weird facts about your friends.
Survive the Internet (3-8 players)
The web-based frame game. Twist your friends’ “online” comments in hilarious ways.
Monster Seeking Monster (3-7 players)
The spooky date-a-thon game. Message and date fellow monsters with special powers.
Bracketeering (3-16 players)
The deranged debate match game. Place smart bets on stupid arguments.
Civic Doodle (3-8 players)
The one-up art game. Compete to improve the town murals.
------------------
This Jackbox 4 review is more about providing an overview and some pros and cons for each game. I don't plan to give it an "out of 10" score.

UPDATED THOUGHTS: I have played a lot more of this pack since this review. And just as an update, I may have spoke too soon for Civic Doodle in particular. The final round is still usually great, but the early rounds can fall flat *very* easily. As soon as someone draws something too big, or too specific, it can be very difficult to work with. There are still laughs to be had, but the game is more flawed than I thought after our first look at it.

Interestingly enough, our group's favourite game of any Jackbox pack is Bracketeering. Everyone always puts a great answer in so it's awesome seeing which one ends up becoming the best of the best (while being highly competitive too.) Of course, gotta love that third round too.

At this point, You Don't Know Jack is so old that they should just make it free - and then all the party packs are add ons! It would really make it the ultimate party game hub! But making a small entry-point game free, they could open up the game to loads of new players. And then the menu for the Jackbox Hub has little greyed out slots for each pack you don't own, encouraging people to expand their collection. It would be convenient. It would introduce new players. And it would pry on that part of our brains that loves collecting things. Win-win-win really!

Bracketeering is incredibly fun when you have more than 8 players, because there is so much creative and funny ideas so it doesn’t get as repetitive.
@philipsmith8863

I believe Bracketeering is great for large groups and I think it’s designed for that - just throw it out there in the middle of a party and have people join in and you can get a good little game going - especially if people really start arguing their points on why they should win, Apples to Apples/CAH style
@GraemeGames
@GraemeGames 6 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. The max players for that one is 16. Waaay above anything else in the pack. I appreciate them trying to cater to larger group settings. It's a little easier to picture that first round of brackets being less of a slog with 16 people trying to argue the point
@ericbess5917

Agreed...it has far less depth than a lot of the other games, but since it can be played with twice as many people, it has its own appeal. I think the biggest thing to realize is that most of the points are given for guessing right on individual contests. My family is a bit more competitive, also, so often they will vote down the obvious choice just because they don't have any points riding on it.

I mostly agree with what you said, I think with "Bracketeering" they were going for a "Quiplash" style game... but instead of just naming it as another Quiplash... they just added brackets to extend the game out longer... a bit like "Tee KO". But I was never a fan of Quiplash as there's not that much to it. I think everybody would be happy if they kept adding "Fibbage" to the packs... much better than Quiplash IMO. I think they really tried to make "Survive The Internet" to be the highlight of the pack... I can tell they really went all in on the design and everything... but I just don't like the idea of having a prompt to respond to... and then have others come up with something else to use it in... I think it's just a bit lazy. "Civic Doodle" I think is a very strong drawing game, even though the actual progression is a "Quiplash" style voting system... the way they've implemented it by adding onto other drawings and having it shown in real time is great, the end round is pretty funny, thought they should've had more of it! "Monster Seeking Monster" is good, I do like the fact that you can play it strategically once you get the hang of it with the whole "powers" thing... although i'm not sure if I like or dislike the fact that the scoreboards throughout the game are basically lies... and by the end you could in reality be in last place, kind of a toss up but I'd definitely play it over "Word Spud", "Earwax" or even "Tee KO". I do hope for Jackbox Party Pack 5 (if they do indeed make it next year), they end up having "Fibbage 4", "Trivia Murder Party 2", "Fakin' It 2", "Guesspionage 2" and another wildcard. I think for Guesspionage if they made the game to be like the final round... and they actually asked people at the end of every game a question... to continue adding to the questions list, it'd be a lot better. Also hope you guys plan on recording more of this game :D
@GraemeGames
@GraemeGames 6 жыл бұрын
Quiplash has always been one of my favorites! Although now and again you have an "off" day, none of your jokes land, and you feel kinda stupid. At least with Fibbage there is always going to be the chance of fooling people. The Bracketeering questions are less outlandish than Quiplash, but when you boil it down, it is very similar! I didn't really notice. Hmm... A pack full of sequels would be cool! There are both good and bad games in past packs that could be easily enhanced. I commend them for not doing Trivia Murder Party 2 straight away. It's an excellent game, and might be best released as a much larger standalone like Drawful 2 way. There will definitely be more Jackbox on the channel!

Guesspionage could be *greatly* improved by saying what was the demographic interviewed. Eg. A group of teenage girls will be drastically different answers to random college kids. I love the idea of the game, and have had fun with it. But I would love to see it improved!

I disagree with the Survive the Internet prompts being lazy. I think it gives it a level of flexibility and replayability many of the other games don't have because you never really have to worry about repeats (one of the reasons I don't like the final round just being pictures). I do agree it lends itself to bad prompts for the actual game on occasion, but as long as everyone is trying to give something to work with - that's fine. I personally wish the points for "getting burned" were higher for this reason. As it is, they don't give you enough points to matter and if you set the next person up too well, then you don't have a chance of actually winning the round. It seems they have been reasonably consistent with each party pack having a sequel to an existing game and the others being new. I think that's a good way to go. I don't have quiplash, for example, but my(married daughter does, so I haven't gotten party pack 1, but I will probably pick up party pack 7 to get quiplash 3 so I finally have it myself without having to get games she already has. Same thinking when I picked up Pack 6 for Trivia Murder Party 2. If I already have a version of the game, I'm not as excited about getting a sequel, but this also allows updating to the new version while still feeling you are spending your money on new content, so it's also got that going for it.

It's interesting to hear other people's opinions, while also explaining the games since in the end it's all just preference. I've read a few reviews mentioning them disliking Earwax as well, while it's one of our favourite games. I've also heard negative things about Civic Doodle, but after seeing this video I totally think we'd have a blast playing it (especially the final round). And I completely agree about how it would be nice to have all the games in one place. We often jump around between games and will go back to the same ones, while still mixing it up in between...so end up loading up a game a few times per session.
@GraemeGames
@GraemeGames 6 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to hear people dislike Civic Doodle! But that's the thing with Jackbox. You're experience will vary completely depending on your group! I should have stated that in the video probably. I played Civic Doodle with a completely different group the other weekend, and found that the additions weren't as creative in each round. But at the same time, our experience with Monster Seeking Monster was the best I've had yet! It really depends on the strengths of the group

Funny how different people's experience can vary. With my kids, Civic Doodle is a bit weak because invariably someone will decide they don't like where the picture is going, so they will scribble over the whole thing in another color to "restart" and due to the group, that is just as likely to be chosen as anything else, which means the game ends up not really working at all. Though when it works, it can be good and lead to some great inside jokes. For example, round 1 started with a fire and a guy roasting marshmallows and added a bear and another guy being burned in the fire. For a later round, we had 3 circles - each was supposed to represent a person in a family portrait and we were supposed to draw one guy at a time. Someone ignored that and turned the outer circles into claws with a central face and that got the votes, so after that, we just ignored what they were trying to have us draw and just added to it, ending up with the same fire, but with the bear roasting marshmallows by the time we were finished. But we did have at least one attempt to reset everything... So I do agree that Civic Doodle is quite fun, but can be dumb with some groups. On the other hand, Survive the Internet has become one of our favorite games. I do have a couple of critiques about the game - the final round just doesn't have enough variety because too many of the pictures are similar and with very limited options and the first person choosing not really haven't any genuine input - it could literally just hand out random images and that round would be just as good, which sort of breaks what the game is trying to do. So while I don't have a problem with the images, I don't think they should be the final round and am a bit disappointed that the double points is so important. The other critique I have is that there is a small amount of points for being the person who "got made fun of", providing a bit of incentive for your initial prompt to be creative and set something up for the next player. The problem is - these points are so few as to be largely meaningless...and if you set something up that gets knocked out of the park, it means that you won't get points for being chosen since you cannot get your own prompt...this actually creates a disincentive to come up with a good setup, meaning that if you are playing "to win", the best strategy is to give crappy setups. If you are playing to have fun, then the points don't really matter at all, but it would be nice if there were more points for the person providing the setup...not as many as for the insult, but enough to encourage good setups. Just to give an idea of how fun survive the internet can be with the right group a few of our responses: For responses to a comment that would make someone look silly, we had the following setups: Dinner and a Show You should try it at least once You were supposed to provide the question. For the first one, my son came up with, "There are two kinds of dogs..." (you might have to think about this a bit) and for the second, my son-in-law came up with "I've always been a bit fascinated with death". Another time, we had to title a video that would make the comment look silly. For the comment, "I want to lick your fingers", a good friend of mine came up with, "I ran out of Charmin" Anyway - I don't disagree with what he says in this video - that sort of thing does happen occasionally where you just have nothing to work with. But if everyone recognizes that you have to extrapolate a bit, the results can be quite entertaining. I do think it is great that Jackbox tries to put a variety of different types of games within each party pack so that there is always something for everyone. I guess the real key is to watch some of these videos having played the game and try to find a reviewer whose group seems to line up well if yours.

This video is old but I'm watching to decide if I want to get it for my weekly family game nights. Right now we have packs 3, 5 and 2 standalones. I think Monsters is really only good with streaming. It would feel really strange playing with people you know. The only one I haven't played yet ever is Civic which I've been tempted to and looks like fun and would be a great game for my family. I will be getting it because right now there's a really good sale going on $12. Something I think they could also do is subscriptions. Maybe $25 each month for all the games? I also hate how when you buy them individually they are the price of what their party pack is. For example Mosters is the same price as party pack 4 and so on and so forth if that makes sense. Overall, I think my family will have a great time with this one. Thanks so much!

Monster Seeking Monster is still, to this day, my favorite Jackbox Game. It is at it's strongest with strangers or friends rather than family members because of it's get to know you mechanics. I actually spent an entire match dedicated to the bit where I got rejected and I sent all my messages to one person where I acted super depressed and I got rejected. I then managed to get the person who first rejected me to feel kind of bad about it. They ended up trying to date me on the final night and I was the one who rejected her. I may have not won that match, BUT I did win, emotionally.

So if i buy the 6 pack for switch does it come with all of the other packs?
@GraemeGames

No, each back is a separate bundle of 5 games. The 6th one is the Party Pack 6, meaning it's the 6th party pack. Not that it's a pack of all 6 party packs! Just to be clear what it is you're getting for that purchase

For this pack, I was on the verge on buying it but now I'm back in the indecisive field and don't know what to do. Maybe I'll just wait for Party Pack 5 in the Fall.

Survive the Internet and monster dating are both great, worth the purchase but not as good as party pack 3

Maybe I need to give Survive the Internet more of a chance? But it never really grew on me. I agree, worth a purchase, but probably not as good at 3

I like your opinion, but I can’t agree with you about Bracketeering

I could be a bit biased since drawing games are hit or miss for me, but Civic Doodle is my least favorite. The personalities talk too much and are a bit annoying; and the drawing rounds are a bit too long for my liking.

It's kind of peculiar. The rounds aren't really long enough to draw anything special - but that are long enough that it is a little boring for everyone else. I pinned a comment where I explain that my thought on Civic Doodle have changed some. I still like it, but it's not the quality minigame I originally thought

* Can you PLEASE get persmission from Berkley and release ACROPHOBIA either as a stand alone or in PP8! It should be super easy as you already have the (old) code. It was the most simple and fun game ever! Don't dissapoint your fans since Windows 95. Release the damn Phil McKracken already with ACROPHOBIA. PS: He say you.. Blade Runner!

This is the first I'm hearing of Acrophobia. Seems like a fun concept! Definitely a better implementation of it than AcroLash in Quiplash 2. Maybe someday they'll find the right format for a spiritual successor :)
