Here I'll help........Opera Singer. Thats the best description for him, he is singing in a very similar style to Freddie Mercury and we all know Freddie sang Opera very well. By extension since he was such an influence for Matt I would say he can do the same as what Freddie Mercury could do. Isolated vocals of "Somebody to Love" then listen to isolated vocals of "Plug in baby." you can clearly hear they are very similar in style. The only difference is the fact Matt leans into the deep breaths Opera singers have to take and Freddie just hid them behind music. Vocally its like having someone who studied Freddie and figured out what he was doing and then incorporated their own style in it and it came out sounding like how Matt Bellamy sounds. He is classically trained and to my understanding that is how it is in school in the UK, they study classical music where in the US we tend to have teachers who study more modern music with a few classical lessons. Most of us know Bach, Beethoven and Mozart from school, we do not learn in normal public school about Paganini, Vivaldi, Segovia, Tchaikovsky, Chopin (hit or miss depending on teacher), etc etc. They learn about classical in depth. So we lack in classical training and it shows big time with pop being nothing but 4/4 time signature, 909 drum loop, simple repeating bass line and a vocal that is OK. Thats the truth, there is no originality in pop music anymore. This is why people start putting people like Lady Gaga, Billie Eillish and Adel in that genre when they clearly do not belong in that genre because they have originality to them and a unique sound. Billie Eillish is not pop and never was, she is more on the lines of MUSE and it shows because she does things very similarly. Lady Gaga is the same with influence from literally Marilyn Manson, literally belongs mostly in that genre of music but pop just stole her based on a few songs. Muse put out madness which is more of a pop song....are they a pop band...nope they are mostly described as being simply Muse or "Oh thats Matt being weird again." If they do not belong in there then neither do Billie or Lady Gaga and Adel is nothing but power singer, while I guess she can be considered pop one thing stands out, she uses different time signatures. So no I don't think she is pop, because she actually considers what she sings, I'd say she is more on the level of Etta James or Billie Holiday and neither of them can be considered pop since it wasn't invented when they were performing. All are highly unique, that is just something you do not get in pop music anymore. The Beatles may have contributed and pretty much created the pop genre, but what it has become, yeah they do not even fit in it anymore. Creativity is no longer accepted in pop music at the fault of record labels turning it into what it is now. A ton of artists will all tell this to anyone who asks, even the artists are fed up with that tired formula. I know it was pretty much a passing comment but it made me think and so I shared with the OP because her statement made me think of all that. Sorry if this is too long in advance.
