That sounds like the most accurate headstone inscription - but they officially loved US Soul Music, as one of their musical influences. I guess most people into the Jam, regardless of their generation, understand why The Jam couldn't cope with the States ( and vice-versa).

Paul Cook had/has a steady, powerful beat, and I'd say mainly ''informed'' by NEU's Klaus Dinger - Cookie has his place on the left of the podium; Rat Scabies mastered the chaotic thunder, getting it right and safe, even if his toms were filled with nitroglycerin and cymbals literally sparkled under a surmounting tidal wave of hits. But like the group he was in, he often wittily used comedy for an even better result. Rat is on the podium too, but not on the middle block. Rick Buckler stood out for his incredibly dynamic pulse, varied and diverse, yet strictly atuned with Foxton's Motownish virtuoso-bassman grooves, even highlighting the expression behind Weller's analytical social essays. That's how i understand your 4-word accurate one-liner. The best.

..who had High Powers taking care of business for them, a vast, thick web of managerial ''skills'' that would turn a worldwide psyops. Just like Frankfurt wished upon a star... Not the case of The Jam. It's true-grit British Social-Realism versus 'the 'That's entertainment'' façade (and i don't mean their eponymous song). The Jam were for real. See if you can answer this : if the B's played America in August 66, being not only their farewell to live gigs but also the promotional tour that coincided with the release of their current new album ''Revolver'', why didn't they play any songs from it during that last American touring leg? Is this the sign of an autonomous, organic ''band''? Give me the Monkees any time!

1:44-2:04: For me, an American, I think the US radio stations (at least before the consolidation in the 90s and after) was just a vast and diverse wild west, with one city or region into one music genre while the city over is into an entirely different group or style. See stuff like Grunge/garage rock (Seattle-Washington), Paisley Underground (Southern California), CBGB, college rock (Athens, Georgia), etc...
@andrewknudsen66742 жыл бұрын
England is a much smaller and more homogenous market than the US, for decades they only had essentially one radio station. BBC. Meanwhile they had two national music weeklies giving tons of bands non-stop attention, interviews, hype, etc. In America you have to love touring and have a couple bona fide hit songs. There will not be a ton of centralized press attention.

Nice find - never seen this clip before. I was always frustrated that Weller lacked the sharp social comment in interviews that was in his songs and lyrics. The questions asked by Tom Snyder were ripe for some scorching comment but Weller did a good impression of Beavis and Butthead instead. I'm a big fan of the Jam and Paul's solo stuff but I say it as it is.

imagine a scenario where PW is asked to explain the context of every song he's written..does ANY artist do that !?! how do u explain Saturdays kids or Thats Entertaiment to an American..Weller lets the listener decide the message literally letting the music do the talking..Weller later regretted getting political with TSC anyway..spokesman of a generation is a very unfair label.

Stop your stupid BS. The interviewer asks intelligent , straight forward, good questions and gets weak responses. I love the Jam, and the performance of Funeral Pyre is wonderful. But Weller, Buckler, and Foxton are not so good in the interview segment.
