Ned from Spain checking in and I've been a fan of The Jam for decades and have nearly everything by them on vinyl. The wife and I saw them at the NYC Palladium in 1982, just before their break up. The song Saturday's Kids is about working or lower middle class kids who live in council houses aka social/low income apartments. They have enough to go to the bars, knock about in cars, get up to mischief and sometimes a trip to a cheap seaside resort but like their parents are doomed to repeat the same story again and again. " It's the system, hate the system..what's the system now ?????"

Thanks for reviewing this LP by The Jam, Justin. They became the most popular band in the UK around 1979-1980 and stayed on top until Paul Weller decided to pull the plug. Popularity came from exciting songwriting, commercial success, and lots of touring to play concerts during those years. People in the USA may not understand the endemic classism that pervades UK culture, and which is often taken for granted in the lyrics of these songs. The lyrics portray aspects of class warfare, and Paul Weller and The Jam found success while they were writing about the working class experiences and aspirations and dead-end lives in pop and rock songs. Same is also found in songs by Ian Dury and by bands like Madness (both of whom often add some humour to the social commentary sting), The Specials, and many others from the UK. (A later anthem in this direction is Pulp's big UK hit, "Common People". Check out the video of the performance from Glastonbury in 1995.) Overt politics show up in lyrics by the band Gang of Four, of course, whose name comes from a Chinese Communist Party political cadre. Eton ("Eton Rifles") and Harrow are two of the upper class private ("public" in the UK) secondary schools that trained wealthy and well-born boys who often go on to lead business and government, done while largely exploiting those people of the lower classes - breeding plenty of resentment from those people whose interests they generally do not protect, who don't earn much, some of whom live in Council housing (often rundown concrete towers of apartments ("flats")). There are some USA equivalents to those apartment buildings in some big American cities.

Hey Paris, my name is Ned and this is a great comment but I was just wondering why you didn't you send it straight to Justin ? Seriously, thanks for the detailed info but as the son of an English mother and US father I am very aware of British history and culture. I still have many relatives living in the UK and all over the world. I'm also a musician and record collector and understand what UK bands we're railing against with both anger and humor. Cheers from España @@parissimons6385

You’re nearly at my favourite Jam album Sound Affects. Although I won’t have a bad word said against Setting Sons.

Probably my favorite Jam record. After Weller broke up the group Foxton went on to Stiff Little Fingers….another great band.

Setting Sons is my favourite album by The Jam. You can feel that the writing and musicality, as well as the stylistic and sonic diversity, have moved on a notch since All Mod Cons. Weller may not have been able to take his concept to its logical conclusion, but in the end that doesn't detract from the brilliance and success of this great album !

This is my fave Jam album, and in my top 10 all time albums. Love it. I was a big fan of their previous album 'All Mod Cons', but this blew me away when it cam out back in '79. The single 'When You're Young' that you mention, would have sat well on this album, and the B side version of Smithers-Jones is well worth checking out. Nice review, thanks.

Really enjoyed listening along to this graet album over on your patreon channel JP. I can never decide if this album, or sound affects is my favorite jam album. Would be great if you found time to do a full listen through of that album sometime soon too ❤

Just finished the video as well as my coffee! This album is just so good. I really appreciate the care you put into your listening & interpretation of themes, and you articulate things that I've always liked about the instrumentation but couldn't put my finger on (e.g. how the recorder in "Wasteland" has a quaintly out-of-place quality that evokes being in a place that was home to fond memories but has since transformed beyond recognition). OH, and also!! Between this album and Sound Affects, The Jam released "Going Underground" as a non-album single that is one of their very best. Even if it's not for a reaction video, I hope you find time to hear it (assuming you haven't already), because I'm sure you'd love it.

My favourite thing about this excellent album is that it is a concept album about three imaginary boys who grow up and go their separate ways... and during the sessions for this album, the Cure were sneaking into the Jam's studio at night to record songs for their first album, Three Imaginary Boys. Foxton's bass is top knotch on this album.

I’ve listened to this record hundreds of times. I saw the Jam in Pasadena, CA in 1982. It was during the Falkland Islands invasion. Little Boy Soldiers was a highlight from that night.

What I love about Paul Weller is he’s a master of cover songs; in most (all?) cases they sound better than the original. ☺️ My favorite Jam album…a tie: Sound Affects and The Gift.

AWESOME!!!!! Thank you, Justin!!! LOVE this band and this album. They're in the midst of a BRILLIANT 3-Album run (All Mod Cons, Setting Sons, Sound Affects) that is among the best ever by any band. While I slightly prefer "Sound Affects" and "All Mod Cons," it's damn close. Probably the "Heatwave" cover song (as good as it is) lessens it a bit, for me. But this album is still top-tier all the way through. Paul Weller is a SUPERB lyricist. Glad you enjoyed this one!! Made redundant = fired. Used by the British all the time. On the "Smither-Jones" track. Foxton wrote everything except the last line, which Weller wrote. On the other album... hmmm... Gentle Giant?

"Heatwave" is a cover of Motown vocal group Martha & The Vandellas song, you have good ears ! Jam's lyrics have a lot of references to British lifestyle to the point that they are bit hard to get sometimes. "Eton Rifles" is a good example. You know it is a stab on "Oxbridge", Eton etc. but at the same time you do not exactly don't know the roots where it rises from.

You'll need tougher questions than that to fox regular viewers of the channel! 😆 A lot of the lyrical content is referring to 1970s British culture and particularly the British class system. I find it depressing to think that more than 40 years later we are still suffering from the legacy of Eton educated politicians! I'm sure others in the comments will point out that Slough is pronounced to rhyme with plow, and the final track points to the direction Weller would follow later with the Style Council. February has seen a strong run of long-song Saturdays. In fact, this album has been my least favourite, and I didn't hate it. I guess I'm not that keen on Weller's singing voice, which may sound odd from someone who likes George Harrison and Bob Dylan. Speaking of Dylan, it seems ages since he was featured on the channel: time to put in another word of recommendation for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

It's a pretty decent record, but nothing can match their 1978 album All Mod Cons which is imperious. Best tracks on this were the single Eton Rifles and Private Hell which is great.
