Over time the Janissaries became a major liability for the Empire but when Mahmoud II finally destroyed them a little over three centuries later, it was too late for the Empire to catch up with the West.

@@shivamkukreja1991The Janissaries were a big reason for that until Mahmud II dealt with them. But as OP says, it was too late. The Ottomans tried numerous times to modernize, but the west developed faster.

Ayaz Pasha was always good for nothing, no wonder, he tended to hide under Hurrem's skirt. Fitting his end was brought by Shah-e-Khuban Sultan, the daughter of Ayesha-Hafza Sultan, that was the most like her. Also, love these neutral scenes of Mahidevran. Nur Fettahoglu portrayed the elegance of Melike Mahidevran Sultan perfectly.

Humayun seems to be a very common name in Turkey, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. The name must have reached India during the Delhi and Mughal rule who were also Turkic.

Encouraging the Janissaries to attack the Sultan's family was really crossing the line. Suleiman might have been able to forgive their outburst of rioting and looting, but to threaten his family? There was never going to be forgiveness for such a crime.

I mean, I'll fully own that part of the reason why ruling in the Ottoman Empire sounds so terrifying to me sometimes is that, yeah, the Janissary Corp *could* just do this. (Which, of course, came to play a *huge* role in Mustafa's execution, but you already know that bit.)
