Here's a fact I'd like to share about Resident Evil's other main inspiration: After Shinji Mikami finally admitted that the French horror game Alone in the Dark (1992) was the by far the biggest inspiration for his Resident Evil, and that if it weren't for this game, Resident Evil would have been an FPS shooter, the creator of Alone in the Dark Frédérick Raysnal commented on this in a couple of interviews. This is what he said, translated from French to English by me: "Back then, I was no longer working for Infograme [editor of Alone in the Dark] when those controversies occured, but I was told of them. Infograme was really not happy, they could see how RE ripped off many elements from our game. As for me, I must confess it did hurt me [that Capcom and Mikami denied having played Alone in the dark and denied any inspiration from it]. I'm not looking for glory, aknowledgement or anything like that. But the contrary was harsh. When the team and the creator fo Resident Evil claim "No, I've never heard of Alone in the Dark", I was like "This is really not honest, at all". I remained hurt by this, for a long time. And a couple of months ago, when Shinji Mikami eventually said that Alone in the Dark was of course the main inspiration for Resident Evil otherwise it would have been an FPS game, I was relieved, happy. I'm even eager to meet him, so I can thank him. It was a relief because I'm a honest person, and I think that it must have weighted on him for all these years. And now that he was no longer under contract [with Capcom], he probably felt the need to admit it out loud. So, thank you so much Shinji Mikami, I hope we'll meet one day." This interview happened around the time of The Evil Within, after Shinji Mikami, who was no longer working for Capcom, was able to speak freely about Resident Evil being heavily inspired by many aspects of Alone in the Dark, something he had denied for years.

Wow, thank you for sharing this info! The gaming industry was basically the wild west back then. Always interesting to hear these kinds of stories.

@@viewistproductions My pleasure! It's a bit sad Alone in the Dark is now kinda forgotten, given the fact it initiated many aspects that Resident Evil used and was praised for (the fixed camera angle, the tank control, wandering in a mansion, the dog-like monster jumping out the window, the zombies, the written documents, the puzzles, the narrative structure, etc). Another fun fact: Frédérick Raysnal was born near my town.

It's worse, They reversed engineered the game that's why they have to stay quiet, House is nothing compared to Resident Evil, it is just a way to say it's "japanese original idea", but under this lie you can only see how much AITD was "stolen", not just inspired, from the tech, to the puzzles, to the fact you can choose a female or male character main protagonist, the UX, the combining system, 3D object items menu and rotation, the similar layout of some part of derceto in RE, pushing and blocking window or door with a cabinet (heavily used in RE)... etc etc... RE was supposed to be an FPS, and Housu was the best way to say its not AITD for them (but if you saw House 1977 or the nes game you know it's a lie), but since AITD was a rupture in the video game world, you can see into this lie, Mikami also said it in a shy interview in 2014 (he played it with his team, implying the possible reversing) and then came back to it saying "maybe" some years later because he knows it's a problem, capcom are serial thief, they also took design of Frankenstein's army and put them on the new RE, and denied it. PS1 was a popular machine with popular companies like capcom... AITD was a game from 92 who got success on DOS in a smaller market and got the precursor syndrome, so people playing RE didnt know about AITD and people like Viewist especially in USA, only knows the narrative (propaganda) of Capcom, even tho lots of newer Devs got the infos now, since Raynal made a GDC showing the tools etc from the early 90's. Even new nightmare's idea was originally for the 2 but Frederick Raynal left Infogrames because of his CEO, but the game was supposed to have real time light, imagine, the guy behind the Alone 1 pushing again the limit... in 1992/1993. Sadly Capcom was stronger than infogrames and his weak CEO who just wanted to use the same engine to make the sequel as fast, Capcom was a beast and got the American market and japanese market, infogrames was small compared to it, but talking about Resident Evil clone is like hijacking the work of doom and saying duke nukem clone. Bonnell stated that he was naif and too small to attack capcom, it was just the far west at this time and everybody was copying small companies (just like smartphone or Facebook games back in those Zyngas era) Mikami will do it again with Evil Within, but this is more inspiration than only copy, it's strongly similar to some part of AITD inferno and AITD 1, inferno who was a proposition of a new AITD detached from RE even tho they created the genre they know people don't have the culture about old games and now only the big licence who litterraly destroyed the original capacity to remerged because of the comparaison (new nightmare used the same tech and ideas of the 1 and is oriented action like the 2 and 3 but people will always say it's a RE clone because of the action). He's like the Carmack of Europe, Sadly Raynal never got the recognition he deserved internationally, (he was knighted in his country tho, the same day, with Michel Ancel, and Shigeru Myamoto in France), he got at least the honesty unlike mikami to tell his influence like Amityville, Romero, and HP Lovecraft (who got a thank you in the credit game), AITD was the first game using interpolated animation and this kind of technology that will be used in other games too like FF or RE. RE is a good game, will not deny it, but the guys behind it are disgusting... we should really give love to A thank you to a "colleague" (who has single-handedly created a new genre with his own development tools) is never a bad thing, but to claim to have invented all this for the glory and denied the original game is to be a bad person, a sociopath. Would prefer to see a video about Raynal and his impact, the guy was really gifted like John Carmack, and not this bs I always see in the US side of youtube about RE.

@@technite5360 Thank you for developping these facts (I tried to do the same in an RE group but people were in denial). And yes, I know he only really got the recognition it deserved here in France, and that he got La légion d'honneur along with Michel Ancel and Shigeru Miyamoto. I live in a French town close to Limoges, which makes me not so far from Mr.Raynal's hometown (Brives). A few years ago, I bought and played his game 2Dark for support (and because I geniunely wanted to try it). Such a shame, really...

You had me up until you said "Metrovania". Can't stand that term, and the fact that you said it about a game that was made before that term was even coined just made me wince. Other than that I enjoyed this video a lot. Hope to see more and you gained a new subscriber.

Thanks for watching! You're right, the game doesn't even really fit a lot of the hallmarks of the Metroidvania style, but it was a more succinct way of conveying what I was trying to say. I'll take the blame for the sake of brevity!
