She asks two questions; What role should govt. play in scientific research and are scientists accountable for the uses of their inventions....Notice she didn;'t say of the second question whether scientists should be accountable for the use of their inventions. Well, many of us know the uses to which government puts most technological inventions and discoveries; first, they hoard the knowledge from the public as they weaponize the discoveries. The question of whether scientists SHOULD be accountable is a more sticky one. The moral issue rears its head on this one and thus it becomes more complicated to answer. In my opinion, Mankind would be in a lot better shape in all ways would it be mandatory for scientists to exercise a more ethical stand relative to their inventions and discoveries and in publishing their findings. Instead they quietly allow the government to squelch their publications for fear of losing any further research grants. So.....here this civilization stands in the middle of these so - called exalted intellects, in the firing line of discoveries they are denied knowledge of in general and only prodigious digging can a persistent researcher learn the truth; and only the most courageous one will publish THEIR findings, many of whom die under mysterious circumstances and years earlier than expected for their demographic. This is as far as I've got and already I am discerning a clever use of language by the use of 'is' instead of ' should ' in an ostensibly sensitive question....
