Naturally this song occurred to me when I heard the news of his death today. I hope the angels are just as he imagined them.

I bought this album in December 1986 (along with The Chameleons UK 'Strange Times' the same day). I still listen to this beautifully sublime song every Christmas. Although it is sad that not many people know it, it makes it even more special because it's "mine." One of my favorite songs, ever.

I remember the 1st time I heard this song, camping by myself in the Irish Hills of Michigan, sitting by the campfire, listening to FM on a walkman, the faint signal of the CBC from across the border, the stars bearing down on me, frogs making harp like sounds in the background. Wonderful tune, excellent enhanced archiving by Tom Peterson.

Thank you so much for posting this lovely video of my favorite band. I am from Baltimore, MD and this is one group of musicians that are the nicest people in the world. I never had a chance to see them, and obtaining the vinyl was next to impossible. A decade or so ago, I found out they would be performing in Philly, then Washington DC, New Jersey, and two shows in NYC before going home. I turned my mother on to them in the 80's and she loved them and the song Penguins. When I told her about the shows, she (at the age of 60something) and I caught all but the NJ show. We shared pints, I wrote a review for their website, took photos, recorded all the concerts, traded tapes with the band members, and they autographed all my old vinyl and CD's. I am eternally grateful for what Pat wrote, "John, you are one of the good ones (I loved that song too)." Max, and Owen wrote some nice things too, And they were so polite to my mother. Your video has brought back wonderful memories to an old man, and I wish I could swim the Atlantic, pop in and say, "Hello, guys."I promised not to sell any of the recordings, but I was told it was ok to trade, so respond if anyone wants too. Love to All the "Good Ones," & the female "Angels."

@@lucienlodger thank you sir. Young or old, doesn't matter, you found them, and way too few have. Beiber writes a "song" with one word , "yummy" gets more hits than all the jbc combined, disgraceful. Thanks for your comment, you must be one of the good ones too.

A very special band epitome of all that is good about Indie music, also refreshing alternative to commercially driven charts at time. Jazz Butcher did not have as much success as they deserved. Up with the best of that period: the Smiths, the Fall, Wedding Present & Chameleons etc.

I listened to Jazz Butcher a bit back in the day, with stray songs on mix tapes and college radio. I may even have had an album or two at some point. But...I have never heard this song until this week. I went looking for something to share with a friend, whose band reminds me of Jazz Butcher a little bit. And I found this. It swept me away.

I was the other way around. I had heard nothing by them but someone recommended them to me, so I bought this - the one and only thing I own by them. Hell, nothing else would ever get a look in anyway.

@johnspence97183 жыл бұрын
Unka is wrong, it's called "Water" & I have it on "The Gift of Music" the 1st one, not vol 2. That album is very old & a collection of singles. 8 tunes & I love Water also. D.R.I.N.K. is on Bloody Nonsense & the chorus is "My oh my, we can't compete, it's only heavy drinking that keeps us on our feet......" Best of luck finding Water. When I asked the band to autograph my vinyl, Pat said wistfully, "It's been forever since I've seen this album. John, you have to promise not to sell it." which I never would. I love the song, & all their music - Owen Jones "Shakespeare & the Bible," Mom RIP & I love you bro. And Mad Love from Baltimore to Max, Pat, Kathy, Owen, David, all the players & all the fans.
