Clean the wheels and pick ups, check for bent connection rods and also check that the screws that hold the plate over any gears aren’t too tight 😊👍🏻 and good luck

Hello Erik, to me this looks like a problem with the pickups. These Hornby 0-4-0s are very basic so there is little that can go wrong. I have noticed this kind of bad running after I tried to lubricate the wheels and went a bit too far with the oil. A good degreasing and cleaning the pickups can make a big difference. These Hornby models are basic but this one does look good in the Southern livery. I hope you can get it to work! Groetjes! Ben

These are based on Hornby’s standard 0-4-0 chassis so the isn’t really a lot that can go wrong. Check everything is clean and lightly oiled but it’s probably advisable to strip it down a bit, remove the body and motor which is held in by a wire clip over its front bearing just behind the worm gear. With the motor removed check the wheels run freely as it seems to be sticking at one point of rotation, could be a slight quartering issue. When you are sure they run well refit the motor ensuring the clip is located correctly so the is not too much pressure on the gears and give it a test.

I don't have anything to add to the advice you've already been given in the comments. It's no doubt a pickup and/or lubrication (lack thereof) issue. You could make a maintenance video, it would be interesting.

Hi Erik, shame about the poor running of the 0-4-0, check the clearance between the motor worm drive and axle gear. These Hornby motors used to be held in place by a wire clip, myabe its not correctly positioned. Cheers, Paul.

I'd remove the motor and see if the wheels turn freely. If they don't, take the connecting rods off to see which axle isn't turning well. Then it's a case of cleaning out that axle's bearings. The motors are usually trouble free, there might be carpet fluff or hair wrapped around the axle. See if the motor runs freely when off the chassis. Looks like a sticky axle to me, got a Jinty 060 with one, am using white spirits to clean out the gunk but that's a metal chassis. Your 040 could have a plastic one that might not respond well to solvents.

is the quartering on the other side correct?

As mentioned, check the pickups on the wheels. Put a little WD40 on the pickups. And do a test. If no results, check the carbon brushes of the motor, if possible. Success.

Apart from the wheels and pickups being dirty it would seem that the worm gear is running eccentrically. To deal with this the wheels have to be removed from their axles to replace the gear. The problem then is that the wheels need re-quartering as they are re-fitted to their axles. There is a jig to do this but it costs over a hundred pounds. It looks like you have bought a dud.
