Saw them open for nirvana at roseland nyc 7/23/93. They came on stage and yow says “we’re the melvins” and they rip into seasick and yow immediately jumps into the crowd singing (yowing) “I can swim”. First and unfortunately the last time I saw them. Blew my mind and I loved it. Then came nirvana. What a night. I think I’m old now.

Yow was one of the best rock n roll frontmen ever-- saw them in 1994 at Toronto's Opera House. At one point, Yow took a ball cap off a kid's head down front and wore it on stage. Then someone else from the audience swiped it off Yow's head. Yow cannonballed into the centre of the pit and disappeared beneath all the roiling meat. He was gone for about 30 seconds, then suddenly surfaced all bloody, but having retrieved the kid's hat. Awesomeness.

Seen 'em about 3 times or so, met David Yow backstage those times real cool/mellow dude (believe it or not), wicked sense of humor of course. There's a video 'round these KZbin parts of a JL show where he gets nailed with a bottle in the head, and is visibly addled. About 3 minutes later is able to finish the rest of the show. Let's see Beyonce pull that off...

This band and David Yow will always be in my heart. Such intense feelings from it. Saw them in a festival in ninety something (Dour Festival in Belgium?) and Yow throw himself in the crowd with his microphone and the long wire hanging over heads, clamped to some random people from the audience. After their show, I think it was the turn of Ministry... and after a few minutes Yow appeared on stage among the ministry members playing their gig, jumping around TOTALLY NAKED (before being swiftly removed from the security guards). What a joy! (Not that I was glad seeing him naked, but such adventures and memories! :'-D ) UPDATE: OK, looking at some other live shows from them, old and new (as well as comments), seems what I wrote is just the norm with them! LOL
@Steaminlidz Жыл бұрын
I remember reading an article around the time that they played their 500th show and he claimed that he’d got naked about 250 times. The microphone in the audience bit was all of their shows. ‘Seasick’ was specifically written so he could scream “I can’t swim” as he crowd surfed.
