The diamond in the Imperial State Crown is the 2nd biggest and is called the second star of Africa. The largest is in the Royal Sceptre and That is the star of Africa. No's 3 & 4 are set in a broach HM wore at the Diamond Jubilee[she calls the 'Granny chips-after Queen Mary] and No 5 is also set in a heart shaped broach, these are called the lesser stars of Africa.Other diamonds cut from the original Cullinum diamond are in necklaces, one of which the late Queen Mother wore often.

Her grandparents also returned from the Delhi Durbar in 1911laden with vauables that haven't seen the light of day since.Even the Delhi Durbar tiara was in The Queen Mothers collection and made its 1st appearance since 1911 on Camillas head at a state banquet in 2005.I don't know if she's worn it since as she now wears the queen mothers favourite tiara - The African diamond honeycomb tiara which she wore to this years state opening. She IS planning to be Queen at King Charles' side.

We get to see about 4 tiaras, and about 5 necklaces, plus the pearls. One tiara has interchangeable pearls and emeralds, and is worn with two entirely different necklaces. The ruby necklace is very old, Russian, and the white dress was made for it. The two huge diamonds are called the "Chips". The Queen took them to Amsterdam in the 80s, so the man who cut the Cullinan diamond could see them again, after about 50 years.

The 'ruby' is actually a Spinell.Ther's a video on youtube called The Imperial State Crown By Queen Elizabeth II.She speaks about the history of some of the stones. It has occured to me that due to her age HM could use Queen Victoria's 'small crown' at the state opening of parliament and have the imperial state crown carried on a cusion in front of her as European monarchs do or even wear The George IV diadem throughout the ceremony.I am dissapointed that Kate doesn't use the Royal tiaras AT ALL!

@35777 btw I meant ancestors not "decendants" - The Crown Jewels cannot be sold (nor can they leave the country) as it's law which cannot be changed - too many people would object and see it just be bought by some Saudi oil tycoon - & her personal jewelry collection mostly hasn't been bought by her anyway, just passed down or gifted. Selling jewelry won't fix the world's problems - it's unfortunately far deeper than that. Though the royals do involve themselves with charity (ie Prince's Trust)

Yes indeed Number 1 is in the sceptre, number two as you say positioned at the front of the Imperial State Crown. I'm amazed that so many people think these and other gems have been stolen. As you know the green emerald in the cross belonged to Edward the Confessor, the large red stone (not a ruby apparently, perhaps you can remind me the term) was worn by Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt, etc. Why are some people so bitter and ignorant?

@MandyJMaddison The Indians associate with The kohinoor diamond which clearly belonged to India. The diamond originated in the Kollur region of Guntur district in present day Andhra Pradesh, one of the world's earliest diamond producing regions, some time in the 1200s during the Kakatiya rule.

@MandyJMaddison Maharaja Ranjit Singh was crowned ruler of Punjab and willed the Koh-i-noor to the Jagannath Temple in Orissa from his deathbed in 1839. But after his death the British administrators did not execute his will.[7] On 29 March 1849, the British raised their flag on the citadel of Lahore and the Punjab was formally proclaimed to be part of the British Empire in India.

@aaGirlification Now that the Queen is in her 80s, her work load has been cut back. Diana was popular and the media made her look like a saint. If Princess Anne had been beautiful, she would have got the same attention. Anne once remarked that if Diana went to the ballet, it made headlines, while when Anne went to Northern Ireland, during the "troubles" which you are probably too young to remember, (her uncle and his family were blown up there), the media ignored it.

Most of the jewelry shown is not Queen Elizabeths but in fact they belong to the crown ie: the people. The queen just has the honour of wearing them at will. The necklace at 1.48 I have recently read was given to Kate as a wedding present from the Queen. She looked radiant in it. She will look radiant in any jewelry she is to wear including a crown in the future. She will not wear the Imperial State crown that the Queen wears. That is for the monarch, male or female.

@YorkGod1 What you suggest sounds like a good idea, but the Queen doesn't actually own most of the jewels. FYI, in the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Queen made the largest donation by any individual in the world. The Royal family contributes far far more to charity, by their work, than those jewels would bring, if sold. The enormously rich Arabs do very little to benefit the poor and needy, and own far more jewels than you see here. They go on PRIVATELY amassing wealth and art.

As for India, (and I am not British), one must give the UK credit for building the foundations of modern India. It was the 'colonizers' who unified a collection of warring states, mainly ruled by vain princes, & gave it at least an early infrastructure, schools, and a civil service. Compare other nations of 'potential' like Congo (ex-Zaire).....

@MandyJMaddison The Queen has no say as to how much royal money goes into the government. The arrangement has been in place for 200 years. The govt. makes a sizeable profit from the Royal family. As for income, the Queen recently told her two granddaughters, Bea and Eugenie, to get out and get regular jobs like everyone else. Princess Anne (aged 60s) is the hardest working royal and deserves more thanks. She does all the sh*twork that no-one else wants. She does FAR more than Di ever did.

Own comment, now. he Queen, does not decide, one day, to march into Cartier and buy some jewels. Does not happen. Most all have been handed down for centuries and many, from other monarchies that were related to the Windsors but are defunct (like the Romanov's and Hohenzollern's). So she is not spending her money or the peoples, to buy a new crown, though I am sure she has bought a few trinkets through the 60 years she has been queen, most are all hand me downs. GBHM!

That's the wrong crown. The first crown you mention is the Imperial State Crown, and has the largest diamond in the world but is the Star of Africa, whcih was gifted to Edward VII by the South African government. The Kohinoor is a much smaller diamond, and is set in Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's crown. If you're going to be rude, at least get your facts right first!!

@redmond12400 I really hate know-it-alls that know as little as you do! The big diamonds came from South Africa. The huge ruby was won in a battle about 700 years ago. The huge sapphire has been in the family for 400 years. The yellow diamonds were a coronation gift from Australia. The ruby necklace is from Russia. There IS a large square-cut diamond from India. It is cursed so that no man can wear it and live. The Queen Mother wore it regularly and lived to to the age of 101.

@BlackzSmoke I am not denying that many British policies caused problems in India, not the least being the famines. But to say that India was "a unified people" that the British divided is simply not true. India had been conquered, by force, several times in succession, by dynasties who enforced law and taxes by oppressive means. To say there was unity is a construction of modern Indian historians. To blame the British for the caste system is plainly propaganda. Do you believe it?
