A brief overview of the history of Jewish life in Egypt. After looking briefly at the Exodus itself, we look at some major population centers in Elephantine, Alexandria, and Cairo, to the present day.
To avoid any possible confusion: this lecture does not argue for continuity between the Jewish population described in the account of the Exodus and the communities that appear in the historical record in the centuries before the Common Era.
Lecture delivered to Montefiore College, London, on March 15, 2021.

I agree. Episcopalian. I had no exposure until Barnard College and then Manhattan life. It was yeshiva Barnard students discussing the Old Testament class that led me to try the NT class. Respecting our differences. They used "stupid" and "ridiculous" for their fundamentalism. But were ecstatic to have faith. I had no idea others endured what I did. Call me naive. I stopped eating my tuna boat and closed my books, all ears. They were not too friendly. I owe them so much.

I have always been fascinated by Ancient Egyptian history. Ive realized that hardly any of those documentaries include Jewish history. I think its important to understand that despite how humans segregate themselves into different groups, we must understand how similiar and integral we all are to one another, from a theological position.

Very interesting presentation, Dr Abramson. Thank you for this thoughtful review of Jewish life in Egypt. Moses in Egypt is such a central figure for all three Abrahamic religions. It is interesting how the central figure of the Exodus and Passover, Moses, is mentioned in the Koran 135 times. The term 'Musa bin Aram' is used for Moses who is referred to in the Koran more than any other individual. In the Christian scriptures of the New Testament, Moses is also mentioned more than any other person in the Old Testament/Tanakh. It is no wonder that so many Christians, as well as Jewish people, enjoy watching your KZbin presentations on such key biblical figures in their historical contexts.

@MTS 3 baby plenty original Hebrews were take to Babylon and later to Persia in the destruction of the 2nd temple in Jerusalem. There is archaeological evidence of this from the region along with the living history since there was a continuous Jewish presence in Iraq till 1949 when the majority of the ancient Iraqi Jewish communities were brought to the modern state of Israel mostly between 1949 and 1951. The Jewish communities that moved to Persia from Babylon in the time of the Babylonian captivity have lived there from those ancient times up till the present modern day Iran although most Jews in Iran moved to modern day Israel in the late 1970s and the early 1980s and the Jews of Uzbekistan moved to Israel mostly when it was the land of Palestine as a part of the Syrian province of the Ottoman Empire in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

There is another interesting fact how rich egyptian literature is ,theres a story of the pharoh called sneferu who takes a journey on the deepest part of the nile with 20 maidens rowing the boat with one singing, and the one singing drops her amulet in the nile and she is so grieved the voyage is stopped she tells pharoh ,and pharoh calls for a egyptian priest named zazmankh, and tells him the situation of the girls amulet so zazmankh ,streches his staff over the nile and the nile parts like a sword cuts threw it leaving dry land the girl jumps from the boat stands on the dry land and retrevies her amulet and gets back into the boat ,and then zazmankh streches his staff again and the waters of the nile come back together again as if nothing happened its a tale that sounds quite similar to moses parting the reed sea

Such a wonderful, fascinating lesson. I have dropped everything I was doing, to tune in. Regarding the ancient practice of keeping any materials with God's name and even any material related to holy material, you have got me thinking. Could it perhaps have been a practical matter of creating and growing a vast library archive for hundreds of years to document holy works and, on a grand scale, the day-to-day life of Jewish civilization? Similar to day's archives, original materials are preserved to be referred to by future generations, to clear up possible differences of translations, opinions and derivations? Such a rare practice would have originated in Cairo, where the meticulous work evidences great scholarship.

So the splitting the waters event is sung about and revisited at least 2-3 times in the Tanak, with a similar feat being mentioned while crossing the river Jordan, yet scholars can't see that happening? Not even with a possibly partially eroded underwater-bridge at sharm el sheik/tip of the gulf of aqaba? Aren't winds able to displace water? What was Miriam celebrating if this never happened?

Whenever the route exiting Egypt is discussed, my emotions get peaked:) I am absolutely convinced they crossed the Red Sea at the Gulf of Aqaba into Saudi Arabia. My reasoning is this: Moshe ran away to Midian and all agree where Midian is today: Saudi Arabia! He took sheep to the Mountain of G-d (Mount Sinai) there is NO WAY sheep are going to travel the great distance from SA to what we call today the Sinai Peninsula. This just does not compute! It MUST be in Saudi Arabia! The most convincing aspect is that the Jews were petrified and traumatized! The ONLY way they would be calm and feel secure was if there was a great body of water separating them from the Egyptians- the same way Moshe chose a body of water to secure his safety. The Sinai Peninsula was Egypt minor, a neighboring land on its outskirts in which the Jews would NEVER feel secure. Putting these ideas together along with the artifacts found at the bottom of the Gulf of Aqaba, the case becomes overwhelmingly clear for the route to be from Egypt into Saudi Arabia where they have found the real Mont Sinai. BTW the Sinai Peninsula is only called that because Constantine's mother decided it was so. Logic must be used to decide this matter as evidence\artifacts can be misinterpreted.

So are we saying that the record that history gives us is that the Jews were in fact living in Egypt but the exodus was a series of migrations out of Egypt to various destinations, rather than one dramatic complete migration to the promised land? And that the Jews have had a continuous significant presence in Egypt all along?

No, we don't have any known connection between the Hebrews who refused to follow Moses out of Egypt (by Rabbinic count, the vast majority of the population) and the communities established later at Elephantine, Alexandria and elsewhere. The difference in time is measured in centuries.

Wonderful lecture as usual Dr Abramson. It is always a time well spent listening to you. I am Egyptian from Alexandria, living now in the US. I grew up in the sixties surrounded by the synagogue and the Jewish school attached to it where I spent the first 11 years of my education. We were the only Moslem family in the building where we lived. That was in the middle of Alexandria’s commercial and financial center. So many Jewish merchants, lawyers and doctors had offices all along the main boulevards. My classes were 50% Jews and the other 50% other religions (mainly Copts, Moslems and Eastern Orthodox). It was a wonderful, peaceful and rich life until 1956 on. Makes me very sad for the tremendous loss of culture, human lives and livelihood.

Israel was a land of milk and honey but no water, The Nile flows a 1000 miles and 80% of the water is used for irrigation and thus agriculture provides quality foods for animals. So a mixed multitude in the countries around Egypt were attracted to going to Egypt at a time of famine, Therefore even the Rambam left Israel for Egypt. Today with Israel high tech and Egypt wanted to improve its standard of living we might see a new era of cooperation. Egypt is putting a lot of money into its past to attract tourists,

Dr Abramson, permit me to become pedantic with your citation of the "United Kingdom". If we transpose the acronym UK into everyday speak, the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland comes to mind. Now, for some of us out there, this is not quite so historically majestic as the biblical united kingdoms of Judea and Israel, but ambiguity is best avoided in the post-modern world, so please may I suggest that we use the lower case whenever we write the united kingdoms of Judea and Israel. The upper case, as in the United Kingdom, is best used in any reference to dear old Blighty, as you and I are wont to say, are we not? Keep well. Stay safe.

Does facts not matter in regards to history? Our history? Perhaps you learned it like this, but that dosnt make it correct. Why do history backwards? Henry you would be running asking for the jews when our people left Egypt and you wouldnt find any and every body would leave for Canaan and you would be left in Egypt.

Interesting to see that you guys and Muslims and Christians don’t actually point out Jesus, messiah and isa(as) as we call it in Islam. Okay anyway, even I only know them through words only they would utter. Muslim words that no other muslims can say except isa(as) And Jewish words that only messiah can say. And Jesus words that only Jesus can say. Saying without losing focus and not forgetting in all lectures. Find that Jewish preacher guys. Popular preachers and up coming smart ones. Look for the word around laws. Law related while you also might catch on. All words in their preaching is around psalm 1 in all scriptures.
