The beginning of December saw the last of the 149 gigs performed by the Experience in 1968, that in addition, to producing an accomplished double album of the calibre of "Electric Ladyland", the band enjoyed a brief respite until the resumption of touring, in this case Europe, scheduled to commence January 8, 1969.
By the end of 1968, however, there seemed to be a lack of direction in the band. Jimi was spending more and more time in New York and obviously wanted to base himself there.
And while there was no real friction, excepting for Jimi’s over self-indulgence in the studio, there was a brief falling-out, so much so that Hendrix wrote an apology letter to both Mitch and Noel.

There is a CD they released in 2018 called "Both Sides of the Sky" which has Jimi and Johnny Winter doing "Things I Used to Do" plus Jimi and Steven Stills doing "$20 Fine" and "Woodstock". There is also "Georgia Blues" with Lonnie Youngblood on sax, which I particularly like.

An excellent episode, especially as far as the insights into Jimi's work ethic, his love of jamming, his mentality as regards press conferences and his dealings with fans are concerned. The section on his fashion sense was great, too, as were the retrospective photos. I only wish that a real voice handled the narration, rather than an AI one. Mine sounds similar to this programme, but I wouldn't make the same mistakes!

@@BELLY_BUTTON_WINDOW Thanks! Please don't take my small point of criticism amiss. This is still by far the best series ever made on Jimi's life and music. Should you ever have the financial means to pay for a "human" voice-over, I'd be more than happy to take on that role. From fan to fan, I'd offer a discount as well, of course! Anyway, please keep up the tremendous work. I going to start watching the two "Electric Ladyland" episodes tonight.

Two things....Those photos of Jimi and his mates, on motorcycles, as well as dressing up as cowboy gunslingers, were not taken in 1968...rather, in 1969-the photographer was Ed Caraeff (sp?)....who had, at the age of 18, taken that iconic photo at Monterey, of Jimi lighting his guitar on fire...everyone had THAT poster!...Remember, Jimi, in early 1969, had trimmed his Afro way back, and we see that in those posed , back-lot (at Warner Bros studio) publicity photos. Also...I thank you for mentioning that Johnny Winter did not show up in NYC, until late in 1968...as you know, many folks think that the infamous "JAM" with Hendrix and Morrison, recorded at the Scene club, included Winter...not possible, as when that jam was recorded, in March of 1968, Johnny was still in Texas!...The other, "mystery" guitarist with Hendrix that night, was likely Rick Derringer--he claims that it is himself. Derringer's group, the McCoys, was the "house band" at the Scene during that time frame. Winter himself, commented that he had never even met Jimi Morrison. BTW--Steve Paul, who owned The Scene club, was actually Johnny Winter's first manager!..around that time, Winter had received one of the largest "advances" ever given to a guitarist--$600,000 dollars! I so appreciate your efforts here...keep it coming, you are doing an amazing job.

Really enjoyed this one. Hope it doesn't get yanked, like episode two of the last one. I always enjoy seeing Pics that seem new to me, and you always seem to have a few. Eye magazine, was a new magazine at that time and they seemed to try to include Jimi quite often, even though it was usually brief. I recall that it didn't last very long... maybe disappearing in 1969, or maybe 70, although, not 100% sure of that... my memory is is in the toilet, these days. Yeah, I think Noel thought he was going to become a star on his own... and he didn't realize, nobody really cared about his tastes in music... but I still believe he was right for Jimi, as bass player at the beginning of Jimi's rise to fame. And Mitch's amazing drumming really helped make Jimi's music, magical!! I'll throw in my usual 5 out of 5, Juicy Tacos 🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮

What we should remember, is that both Mitchell and Redding were like 20,21 years old while Jimi, who was 24 when they got together, was much more "experienced" than his younger British mates. Both Noel and Mitch were quite full of themselves, like many younger men are. Mitchell has been characterized as being pretty aloof, not particularly willing to hang with Jimi. Noel too was clearly overly impressed with himself, but he did try to better understand Hendrix, even suggesting to Jimi that he needed some professional counseling!...Jimi, of course, blew him off, stating that he "Didn't need no one to fucking talk to!" Later on though, Hendrix apologized to both of his bandmates, sending them each a long letter explaining his aberrant behavior. As for Noel's bass playing...I feel he was certainly adequate onstage, and remember, Jimi picked him because he had that Dylanesque hair style, that Jimi was impressed by!...Clearly though, Jimi preferred to play bass on many of his studio efforts. That must have really rankled Noel--I mean, think about it!--Jimi did not approve of Noel's efforts in the studio, so he just arbitrarily wiped Noel's playing...not even discussing that maneuver with Noel? Pretty hurtful, I would think.

@@curbozerboomer1773 Trying to piece "what really happened" during this time with Jimi and the Experience... is probably a crap shoot. I would possibly guess that Noel's mind was on his newly formed band... and that's what he really wanted to work on. His mind was elsewhere. Jimi was maybe imagining that he, himself, could come up with more imaginative Bass lines, to complete his musical ideas, artistically. And he did a pretty good job too. I can't imagine how Noel would've played 'Gypsy Eyes' or 'Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland' or even '1983', yet I'm not going to complain about Noel's playing on 'Come On Pt 1' or 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)'. 'Electric Ladyland' was a fantastic album, in spite of the problems. All we can do, is guess., and I'm not saying you're wrong either... lol.

Fat Mattress was awful. I was a Hendrix freak and in 73 I saw it in a cut-out bin so I bought it. I really tried to like it but it was weak. I thought, even at 15, these guys must've stroked Noels ego, old friends or something. Not good. The biggest break so far since the experience formed. the January 69 Sweden concert after the break was the sloppiest I had heard the band and in the video Jimi says to the audience, "You wouldn't know the difference anyway." I bet some of those jam bits from Dec. 69 were true gems. Ted? I would've loved to see young Ted and Jimi. Great pic of Johnny w/Jimi. The bootleg wasn't bad. All of that Curtis Night and the Ed Chalpin crap must've messed with Jimi bad. Jimi's dress was of the time but perfect for Jimi's expression and his grandma's Indian tribe. I bought a conch belt at Goldblatt's in 72. It was cool.
@BELLY_BUTTON_WINDOW
@BELLY_BUTTON_WINDOW 5 ай бұрын
Hey my friend, you're spot on! The Ed Chalpin case definitely messed with Jimi's head on many levels. As I covered in an earlier episode, Curtis Knights says he was hanging with Jimi, who wanted cash to party with, he tried Jeffery who, for what ever reason, told him to "f - off". So he suggests to Curtis that he'll hit-up Chalpin for a few bucks! And despite Jimi insisting that the recorded jams could never be used, and note, Chalpin lied to his face and said, "No way Jimi!".

Jimi was a brilliant bass player. I believe it's Him playing on All Along the Watchtower. What did Muddy Waters know about bass? Simple repetitive patterns. Noel Redding couldn't play bass to save his life and he sang like a girl. Back in 1986 in " Musician Magazine " they ran an 8 page interview with Redding. All he said was he was a better guitar player than Jimi, singer, songwriter etc. I was never angrier in my life. Redding only fed off Jimi's talent and fame. Plus all the chicks only wanted Jimi. " Fat Mattress"? What a stupid name. What did Redding end up with? NOTHING!!!
