The Joshua Tree Winter Hike You Can Not Miss

What to do when winter snowstorms descend in Southern California? Head out east to Joshua Tree of course!
We refuse to let winter weather crush our hiking dreams, and Joshua Tree makes the perfect escape for winter hiking.
We would highly recommend planning a visit to Joshua Tree national park this winter, and if you do, put this hike on the top of your list! We started at the Black Rock Campground and took the Panorama Loop Trail out to Warren Peak. Along the way we got up close and personal with tons of funky Joshua Trees, and had the most spectacular views of the desert, San Jacinto, San Gorgonio and all the mountain ranges beyond.

Yes! J-Tree is amazing for many reasons including the spectacular climbing and rock formations, but the J-Trees themselves are also incredible. It's like walking through an outdoor sculpture gallery. ❤️

Adam singing…. Moving on. Seven years ago we did a three weeks Christmas road trip from San Diego to San Francisco and spent three days in Joshua Tree park. Your walk was a lovely reminder of that time. I agree with Adam I was fascinated by the trees and the park that has some lovely walks with fantastic rock formations. That road trip was one of the best trips of my life.

Great suggestion! I'll have to head up to J-Tree during the winter break. I love this time of year when desert hiking is the way to go; already been out to ABDSP and it is so gorgeous when the weather is sunny and cool. This video is so great--nothing hardcore, just a chill day in the desert enjoying being outside with each other. OMG I was grinning so hard at Adam's singing. Adam is like when Martin Doherty sings on a Chvrches song; I mean it's great but you really are there to hear Lauren. Owen's Peak. Trail. You can do Kiavah Wilderness dead end both sides of pass, Owen's, and red rocks in same day. The back side of RRs is nice. It has trees too.

This is more than just a beautiful & casual hike displaying the natural beauty the desert hides, it’s also a brief character study of Adam & Elise. The hikers come across a Joshua tree & give their individual points of view. Elise looks at the twisted, fallen Joshua tree more as a final product, succumbed by nature’s forces. Adam’s brief a cappella rendition of Elise’s song can also be a small window into his soul. The sound has a soothing, gravely & strained sound to it, leaving the listener little doubt the man, at his core, possesses a compassionate & tender soul. I have no doubt the answer to the question posed by the duo, “Should Adam leave the vocals exclusively to Elise?”, is not by highlighting individual strengths & weaknesses but, by collaborating on a song.

You drew a pretty darn accurate encapsulation of what we're like in regular life. Sorry Adam, she has you beat! Nice views! When I was in California years ago in early September, I skipped Joshua Tree only because I was afraid it would have been too hot! So I went further north and visited cooler places like Lake Tahoe, Kings Canyon, Redwoods, Lassen and Sequoia National Park!

Well you probably did the right thing. Joshua Tree in September can still be pretty miserably hot, but the areas you visited are perfect at that time of year! You'll just have to come back for some late fall/early winter exploring :D

Awesome hike! I had a bad experience in Joshua Tree a few years back while stargazing. I had a big horn sheep stalk me and creep me out and a junkie tweaker sneak up on me to ask for food and water. Be careful and stay safe out there. That whole Mojave Desert area is a body dump and there are some weirdos living off the grid.

So funny you say that, because E's brother just had a super weird encounter out there with a guy dressed all in tactical gear and fully weaponed up -- scared the heck out of him. I'm still way more scared of snakes than people in the desert, but definitely smart to be aware of all the potential dangers! ❤️

Cactus to clouds and palms to pines are the same trail. I always liked to take my time and enjoy everything, so I made it a three day backpack and took in all of nature. Just threw my sleeping bag on the ground when I got tired, and got up when rested. Stars are gorgeous, no one around. Truly one with nature, and I felt safe being alone. And an amazing workout with a heavy pack. Views of Palm Springs at night outstanding. Breakfast or lunch at the tram, then off again on your way. Going down the same trail is great too if your knees are strong, all different views on the way down. Have fun you guys, see you next time, be safe☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️😂

My favorite Joshua tree area is Walker Pass. Kiavah Wilderness. And of course the king of Joshua Trees Cima Road. The rolling terrain there at Joshua Tree and The Eagles nest is epic.

So jealous, I love Joshua tree this time of the year. I spent the night in the middle of nowhere a couple of times and it was amazing. As far as Adam singing... I would listen to him reading all day, but no, just no to singing. Let Elise do the singing, Adam should stick with voice overs. This is another great idea next time I get to Joshua Tree, I will definitely check that one out. Unfortunately we were in San Jose this year so I was stuck with a couple of trips up Mission Peak.

Yes this is the best time for J-Tree! So much less crowded than summer, yet still equally beautiful. What an amazing state we live in. And Mission Peak is great -- one of those lovely stay-in-shape hikes with a couple thousand feet of gain. I do one of those -- Temescal Peak -- at least once week here in Santa Monica. Always feels great. Ya the singing didn't go so well, but I'll keep belting them out in the shower and maybe one day I'll get there 😂 --A

Next time you're at Anza Borrego, go to the Botanic Garden that is near the visitor center and you'll discover that Elise's friend at 2:30 is a Jumping Cholla. I've never been to Joshua Tree and really need to go - it's so unique. It was really nice to see San Gorgonio in the distance as my Dad would taking me hiking there and it got me hooked on hiking - even with the struggle of that final climb up it. Adam's voice is not bad at all. He just needs more pitch training. I want to hear a mountain top duet from you two sometime.

Yes usually did it in winter. Ice axe, crampons, and strong headlamps because the trail is really hard to make out as you come up to level ground where the tram access is. If it has snowed a lot, there may be no trail at all. Bring heat packets for feet and hands. Winter camping is not for everyone, but what an adventure it is.
