In Chinese mythology, Erlang is the judge of Heaven. He is as powerful as Wukong. His dog is his most loyal partner and can even eat the moon. In the novel, he did defeat Wukong, but Heaven cheated. The crown you see It is more like a spell. Whenever Wukong resists, it will shrink and give Wukong a headache. The Buddha suppressed Wukong and he was pressed under the mountain for 500 years. After Journey to the West, Wukong also became a Buddha, but the heaven don't trust Wukong, this is the prologue Erlang comes to arrest Wukong

so nice to see people contribute explanations! to supplement, he is both a figure from mythology and a real taoist deity. there are different versions of his origin but he's been worshipped initially for water and agriculture matters and as a local protector. in the novel i don't think he's entirely portrayed as a 'judge' but someone serving the court above, possessing strength and political power too

You're right, the original story is indeed true, but this is a sequel to the game science based on the original story. In fact, there is a TV drama called 《The Continuation of Journey to the West(2000)》in China, where Sun Wukong becomes a true friend of the Heavenly Court and Buddhism. However, the background of this game is relatively dark. If you keep playing, you will find that the Heavenly Court seems to be controlled by the demon world. If you observe carefully, you will find that Erlang's hair accessories have skull symbols, and he never says stupid to his family "Howling Heavenly Dog", so why is it called "Black Myth".

Nah Michael you are too good at this game, I wonder if Radhan turned you into an Ultra Instinct player. I love the game so far but I am dying at least 5 times to most of these chapter 1 bosses. I think its because the dodge invisible frames window is very small since wukong dodges super fast

Btw Micheal chapter 3's animation short will be directed by Hiromatsu Shuu, the guy who also directed Chainsaw man Ending 5, blades of the guardian trailer and fate grand order short film. This one is their first installment and is based on the journey to the west novel which featured wukong as the main character. Future black myth games will feature different stories from the myth
