My husband is in hospital at present and has been receiving 6 hourly red blood cells and platelets transfusion. I’m eternally humbled and grateful to all donors who probably are not aware that they are saving the lives of 3 people just by filling a blood bag! This video is short and easy to understand. Most grateful.

I really like the way the NHS have worked hard to show donors where their blood goes. The text messages informing you which hospital your blood has gone to really humanizes it (excuse the pun!). I'm an O neg, Kell neg, CMV neg and rr blood donor. Last year I got a text saying my blood had been delivered to St Georges in London. Exactly two weeks later my daughter fell out of a tree and had to go to St Georges for plastic surgery on her leg. When I realised my blood was potentially still in the building, or even more unbelievably being given to my daughter, it really bought it home very quickly. My only gripe is that there isn't a platelet donating station in the South East outside Tooting. Seems a shame to be missing out on the donations of such a large congestion of the population.

I’m A+ too. You should consider donating platelets rather than whole blood. Our blood type is one of the best kinds for platelets along with B+, O+, AB+ and AB-

If your blood is problem free, what is the likelihood it gets used? I’ve heard only a small percentage of donations are actually given to patients.

The answer is logical; it depends entirely on needs and requirements of patients. The most commonly occurring blood group types will obviously be held in larger stocks but are needed more often and are used more frequently, whilst rarer types such as B negative have much smaller stocks and are often used for patients immediately.

Late here, but whole blood donation is also used in testing with live saving research so it will likely go towards that if not in medical emergencies/procedures.
