Professor Jigoro Kano actually created Judo to keep classical Juûjutsu alive and to remind Japanese people of their great martial arts culture; Also he found that the classical Juûjutsu could empower students as a teaching tool. Professor Jigoro Kano actually wanted the students to learn the classical kata once they had progressed in ranking.

Chadi as you are a student of Judo history, maybe you can help me. How common was randori in the old jujitsu systems pre-Judo? When took Judo many years ago it was implied that old Jujitsu was mostly waza and kata, The mindset at the time was Judo was for practicing techniques live and jujitsu was done for techniques that could not be done live.
@Chadi

Good question! It was more common than people think, dojo storming and tournaments were quite common, so being ready was crucial, sparring was done a lot. Kata too, many accounts discuss Kano sparring as a young man and facing difficulties, same for Tanabe during his interview with Maruyama.

Kano did NOT remove old koryu techniques from Jujutsu to Judo. In Judo all the waza are still there, Leg locks, wrist locks, neck cranks, strikes and kicks are still part of Judo, they are merely not allowed to be used in competition.

@@ChadiDo you mean randori and similar sparring was not saved through the years but the scrolls and instructions for kata and throw teqniques and positions was so that was still practiced? Also my old Sensei used thas scissorslock on me, it was his special move to scissor your intestines 😂

2:18 They are two different techniques on each page. Left page is 拂ヒ腰=払い腰=はらいごし=Harai goshi and the right page is 足拂=足払い=あしばらい=ashi barai. I provided the old Japanese and the modern with the English. Though I think you descriptions are close I dont believe they are 100% accurate, it sounds like to me you are describing them as a single technique. Don't take this as a hate comment, this is just some feedback. If you need someone to read the old Japanese please reach out or find a reader and youll be able to provide a better explanation. I am very familiar with this book I have been trying to research the origins of Uchi Mata in various Ryu Ha.

That torso strangle is done a lot in my bjj gym, we call it the rib crusher. Depending on the person who does it, it can really suck. I've never known anyone to have gotten internal injury from it, but I can assume the worst with a large person performing the technique on a smaller person. It also probably helps that we do it in no-gi versus in the gi.

8m20s picture on the left shows a very deep jigotai, more similar to the shiko-Dachi (horse stance) used in karate forms. Would be interesting to know why in most old judo books (kodokan judo, mifune book, kimura book) the jigotai stance is depicted as much less deep, Almost upright. And if there would have been a reason for kano to abandon the more traditional stance. I some of the kodokan kata footage by the way they are using a much deeper jigotai although not as deep as the shiko-dachi

I wonder why people even care to differentiate between a reap and a sweep. For me it is simply taking away the support of one leg, so basically the same technique.

9m20s, picture on the left shows atypical low kick to the back of the kee, which is executed after tai sabaki ending beside or backwards of the opponent. Kicking to the back of the knee brings ukes head and neck down so that it is easier for tory to apply shimewaza. We used to do hadakajime (rear naked choke) in karate, but this picture looks like tori is doing katahajime

So. Jigaro was taught techniques, took the techniques that he liked, and rebranded it as his own art. He didn't create a single new technique, just took what he was taught and passed that on. So, why is Jigoro seen as a genius in your eyes and Helio as a scam artist? They both did the same exact process.

In Japanese martial arts, they created new names constantly, nearly ever generation sometimes. But somehow it was deceptive or wrong when the Brazilians did it. Different emphasis on technique, training methods and corresponding sport should be more than enough to justify a change in name, in the eyes of any unbiased critic.

According to John Danaher in Mastering Jiujitsu, Kano's key contribution was how he implemented sparring such that these techniques could be practiced with live resistance in a sustainable way, resulting in an evolutionary and refining process of the whole art.
