A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Boeing 747 - which came to be known as the Jumbo Jet. Lots of archive footage and interviews with those who built it, flew it, worked on it and marveled at how it earned its descriptor as the plane the "shrunk the world."

I took my first ever flight on a 747,the first of over hundreds,she truly is the Queen of the Skies. The Airbus A380 is a distant second and is another amazing aircraft. As a pilot,they both have given me endless hours of timeless joy

B-29 IMHO, in spite of the terrible cargo a few carried in the summer of 1945. RIP all victims of war.

I worked for PanAm in the early 80’s. I had the opportunity to fly on the 747SP from Sydney to Los Angeles. What a plane what an experience! SP meant Special Performance.

I finally got my first ride in a 747 in June 2003. It was a military charter flight from Topeka, KS to Kuwait with a stop in Amsterdam. Being it was a military charter with just the Army National Guard Signal Battalion on board AND a flight crew of USAF Reserve or Retired, the crew allowed us access to the cockpit. Also something you won't see on a regular flight, we were all carrying our weapons into the cabin. No ammunition though. That would come in Kuwait. Late at night I couldn't sleep. So when most were asleep, I went up to the cockpit. I spent over an hour mostly sitting at the flight engineer station. All the gauges and switches! I am a bit knowledgeable with airplanes. I could understand what most of the dials were telling me. Now to manage everything....Forget about it! The trip was a bit surreal. We enjoyed a couple of movies. When the crew switched on the navigation screen and we were over Saudi airspace, our mission suddenly became very real. We were not tourists. We were Soldiers and Kuwait was our last stop before Iraq and war. The plane was a 747-200. Probably getting up in age. Still, a great memory before heading off to war. Thanks to all that trip on our flight crew for giving all of us a last bit of "civilian" relaxation.

I came home from Frankfurt in 1996 on a classic 400 and it was a very very good flight home. The flight crew were so relaxed and calm it was very visible to everyone. Thank you Lufthansa.

I will always remember my first look, and at the same time, my first flight on the Jumbo. As a "lad" of 21 I was flying to London from Winnipeg, Canada on my first vacation to GB since my family emigrated to Canada in 1968, on a DC8. What a sight it was as I walked up to the large staircase at the front of the plane, no 747 jetway at Winnipeg's airport. It was a cheap, all one class charter flight, and I had seat 3H. I was sitting in the right window seat, where the curve of the fuselage gave me lots of foot room. It, along with two other similar flights, was a most memorable experience.

In the mid 90’s my wife’s grandmother gave me a PanAm bag as I gift when I received my A&P license. This bag has everything in it. A small coffee pot & cup, a small iron, silver wear and condiments…till this day I still have it.

Love the Jumbo travelled a lot in the 80s and 90s loved the big top version, landing in Ki Tak ( Hong Kong) many times always a heart stopping few minutes lol . ❤ it was the plane that enabled ordinary people afford to see the world. Best ever passenger plane IMO ! I still can’t believe it is 50. it held its own in bad turbulence over the Himalayas and Burma too, It will always be my favorite. I feel these were the golden years of Boeing, the designs in that era were amazing. The Concord was for the rich most people could not ever afford to fly in it, the 747 was for the masses, you never felt claustrophobic on it for some reason. Even the seats felt bigger, maybe I was slimmer 😂😂❤❤❤❤❤

My only 747 flights were to and from Japan back in the early 90's, 11 hours non-stop. What a ride!

I LOVED sitting on main deck at the front curve where you could kind of looked forward. The cockpit floor made quite a lot of noise.

He was not kidding about no security in those days. In 1970, as a 16 year-old I saw my first one at an O'Hare gate. It was exciting, to say the least. I walked onto the plane, climbed the staircase, and sat in the captain's seat without anyone saying anything.

I helped build the Everett plant where they were made. Specifically, did architectural engineering on the paint hangar. It was shaped like the plane.

What is not said is the freight capacity, which gives the public a standard of living unimaginable 100 years earlier.

I've never flown on an Airbus A380, and I understand the scope and capability of this aircraft. However, for me, it will never displace the 747's appeal and special place in aviation history. I've only flown on classic 747's, models 100 and 200 on both Air Canada and Pan Am.

Laker's DC10's were NOT second hand! They were brand new from McDonnel-Douglas. I think it unfair to say that Laker was a threat to the 747. He simply catered for the backpackers and families on low incomes that could not afford the prices Pan Am, TWA and BA were charging!

Second aircraft type that I ever went on when I was very young in 1973.The first was a British Midland Vickers Viscount from Teeside Airport in northern England to London Heathrow to connect with a South African Airways 747 to Johannesburg Jan Smuts.

What was weirdest about the 747 is it’s the only major airliner that has passenger seating (the first 4-6 rows on the lower deck) that is further forward in the fuselage than the flight deck

747s are awesome, but IMHO the 707 was THE "game changer". It was the plane that established cheap worldwide air travel to the masses, not the 747. By the time the 747 went into service, jets were absolutely dominant in air travel. The 747 was "bigger", but other than that, not exactly a game changer. First time I rode one, in 73, I didn't even know it would be my plane until I was already boarding. It was bigger...

While the 707 was one of the first successful passenger planes, the 747 allowed an economy of price unheard-of before its introduction. It literally allowed thousands of people, like myself, to go on vacation to a distant continent.

Although the "good" people at Boeing have said that they have had enough of the Queen, there are still hundreds of them in operation and the demand for air cargo is at an all-time high. Surely, it is one of the most reliable aircraft for airlines and travelers. Who knows how long it might last? It may continue to fly for another 50 years, just like the beloved DC-3. However, when the time comes for the Queen to retire, it will mark the end of an era, and she will be greatly missed.

The -300 was not longer than the -100 or -200, the upper deck was, but the body was not. The only 747’s that were different lengths were the 747SP and the 747-8

@@nuvinpooliyadde7319 the cabin noise is reduced by 50% the space in the cabin is more comfortable, it was the first aircraft to have cabin lights that changed reducing jet lag the aircraft has a larger distance than the 747, it’s initial climb is higher and faster than a 777-300er and it’s reduced nose pollution makes it perfect for airports with deduced sound. i’d say fly on one and you’ll get it because unless you have you’ll not understand the difference between it and other aircraft’s, yes it was released at a time when airlines were looking to down size their aircrafts so that made it not a success in terms of sales however the 787 took a lot from the A380s so in that sense i think it’s pretty successful

You know the American carriers that didn’t replace the 747-400 with the new ones I have one word for you. TRAITOR!!! if they are soooo worried about the fuel consumption then charge a fuel surcharge, people will pay it. Just how fuel efficient is flying 4-6 jets to do what this one can do in 1 trip

There is nothing about the 747 development. We at Northrop built the fuselage components in Hawthorne, California, Los Angeles County. Boeing didn't have the money to design and create the tooling for the 747. We did that for the body of the fuselage. This advantage to Boeing became an issue after the 747 was a success. Boeing didn't like sharing the profits and worse didn't like sharing strategic plans. This led to Boeing not wanting to invest in evolving the 747. Thus by the 1990s it was apparent that Boeing would develop a completely new aircraft so they could cut Northrop out. Q

Amazing aircraft for the era but I will deliberate avoid them now (maybe its a anti Boeing thing...though dont mind a 777 despite being less comfie cabin). Size and range of little consequence these days. In fact, nothing worse than checking in or boarding with 500 other people. BTW even back in the day probably the 707 made the biggest impact to commercial air travel.
