We do this recipe with the Coho salmon from the river here. I don't care for the dill that much, so I do it with pepper. If you hit it with a couple of hours of cold smoke, it makes it next level. It also helps if you put something heavy on the fish while it's curing to push the liquid out. I think I might have to add wahoo hunting to my bucket list. Hawaii is closer than Florida though, so I might try there.

Another winner. Just out of curiosity what was the distance between you and the fish? Trying to think about the power of these guns to get the spear trough all the meat. Please educate me about the detachable spear tip, do you loose it after the shot? Excuse my ignorance, I'm old school, I used to spearfish in late 70's 80's with compressed air guns. Ceviche recipes? Cheers.
@KeyWestWaterman3 жыл бұрын
I try to keep my shots under 20’ to maintain accuracy and a good holding shot. And the slip tips are only held on with resistance. Once you fire forward momentum keeps the tip on until it goes through the fish and slows down falling off on the back side. They are my preferred method for wahoo as they don’t do much damage to the meat. Wahoo is very soft.
@KeyWestWaterman3 жыл бұрын
And no you don’t lose it.

Kinda interesting how our atlantic wahoo come as close as 1m, thats 3feet. They usually stay in huge groups, we have seen on a good day 200+ circling us for over an hour while hunting. Most important part about catching, let them run. Sometimes my 300feet setup is not enough...

I just found your channel. It is great! I have learned so much in just a few videos. I live in TX. I have a 16-yr-old who is newly obsessed with spearfishing. A newbie for sure. We have just a few days during Christmas school holiday to give it a try. He wants to practice or get instruction. I am trying to find somewhere we can drive to (Navarre and Destin are 12 hrs) that he can get some practice from shore. Does such a place exist? If we can get some experience then the next step would be to plan a proper trip with a charter with you. What is the best time during the summer? Are any fish in season right now in FL? Am I crazy to even attempt this? He is a certified SCUBA Open Water and Advanced Diver with PADI. No freediving experience yet. Thank You!

that is awesome! and i'm honestly not sure, I'm not familiar at all with north Florida! there's always something in season to spear at all times just check the local regulations, we have different regulations here in Monroe county from the gulf side of Florida. for beginners down here I recommend anytime after may 1 that's when grouper opens for us in Monroe county.
