Speakers: Janis Emmanouilidis, Deputy Chief Executive & Director of Studies, European Policy Centre; Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive & Chief Economist, European Policy Centre
Moderator: Jacki Davis, Senior Adviser, European Policy Centre
This EPC Update and Post-Summit Briefing analysed the results and discussions of the European Council meeting that took place on 27-28 June. The agenda of the summit foresaw that EU leaders discussed the Union’s future leadership configuration and strategic priorities in the next institutional cycle, support for Ukraine, security and defence, as well as external relations.
Following the inability of EU leaders to agree on a compromise at their informal meeting on 17 June, will the heads of state and government be able to agree on the final composition of the Union’s new leadership configuration? Which priorities will be included in the European Council’s 2024-2029 Strategic Agenda and how ambitious will it be? Will EU leaders indicate how they intend to implement the Union’s objectives in the coming years? In the aftermath of the G7 summit and the Ukraine peace summit, will the EU27 make progress when it comes to further enhancing the Union’s support for Kyiv? And finally, will member states be ready to increase the EU’s efforts in the areas of security and defence and will the European Council take concrete decisions in this respect?
