Outstanding job ! The military poncho with two long sticks also makes a great improvised stretcher. I plan to try it out as a field expedient cot. I think just supporting the cot on two large notched logs would be OK for Eastern Woodlands. Not as high, but plenty stable. Thanks for the info.

This shure beats a hammock for setting up a semi permanent camp site. Nothing like a flat cot for stretching out on off the ground. I just discovered the Sea to summit bug net coat and pants. That takes up no space and is solid.

Was in the scouts for four years and this guy just taught me how to make two knots that the scouts should have taught me....(going out and tying these knots on everyone and everything now)
@RenegadeSith4 жыл бұрын
tbh those knots and lashes are all in the Scout handbook bro. If not there, then definitely in the Pioneering merit badge workbook. It really depends on the Troop you’re in as to the quality of outdoor education you receive. My sons and all the other Scouts in our Troop can tie these knots and build these shelters. They always want to improvise shelters when we camp. It’s like pulling teeth to get them to pop tents in a line at the campsite... they’re always off in the woods tying ridgelines and rigging tarps.

It's OK as an idea . . . . but labor and material intensive. You're doing this for a basecamp that will last you for a while . . . . not backpacking the AT. But, it is possible to build modifications of this that you could adapt for backpacking. One shortcut would be to just lay the two side poles over a horizontal log at each end. This is one of those things you train yourself to do as you hike, like . . . . "there's a pole, there's another pole, there's some firewood . . . . hmm . . . . nice place to stop for the night." So you build the bed where the resources are . . . . not just pick a spot to stop for the night and THEN try to figure out where the wood will come from. You can also splint piece of wood together to make the long pole. As always, the Corporal does an awesome job of explaining and demonstrating. Well done Marine!

If you are going to be in the jungle with that setup I'm assuming it is going to be hot and humid and the airflow going underneath and around it would be quite welcomed. It would also keep the creepy crawlies away from you by not having anything underneath it. Tarp would be great for protecting you from rain or other weather conditions that happen in nature

if it whouldent be a pain in the neck to carry a surplus strecher whould work great for a raised bed but it whould be conversome to carry daily but for a base camp idea i chould see using a strecher that way your poncho liner can be another warmth layer
