A wide eyed Ralph Macchio in that crane stance is one of Hollywood's most iconic images.

It really is. I saw a montage, all about the pop culture of the 80's, it was in a post on Reddit. All the moments...Kevin Bacon in Footloose raising his fist, the Death Star blowing up, Michael Jackson moonwalking, The Police on stage, LL Cool J rapping, and there's the image of Daniel Laruso; wide eyed with the tremble of extreme focus, hands and 1 leg raised in the Crane... It's so awesome :)

I have seen some debates about this movie in the comments about the crane kick being illegal and that Daniel was not the first to win the tournament back to back. If you watch the movie, Ali tells Daniel before his first match “ everything above the waist is a point, the head, the sternum, the kidneys, and the ribs”. Clearly the crane kick is to Johnny’s head , so it is legal. Regarding Daniel being the first back to back winner, that is also true. Before the final match, the announcer mentions that Johnny Lawrence is the defending champ and a 2 time winner of the tournament. That language clearly indicates that Johnny won the tournament last year but did not win 2 years in a row, otherwise the announcer would have identified Johnny as the 2 time defending champ not the defending champ. So Johnny ( who is a senior in high school) won last year and lost the previous year and most likely won his freshman year in high school. Therefore , Daniel is the first to win the tournament 2 years in a row.
@Night_Rider83 Жыл бұрын
Also, before this scene, where there's a bunch of smaller matches going on in a montage to 'You're the best', Johnny kicks a kid in the face and proceeds on. So yeah, its legal.

No actually, Johnny won back to back in 82 and 83. The announcer in KK3 was wrong
@josephgallo3241 Жыл бұрын
@@kingchrisa4188 Watch the first Karate Kid movie again. The announcer introduces Johnny “ Defending Champion John Lawrence of the Kobra Kai. Two time winner of the All Valley Under 18 Golden Trophy” That means Johnny won the tournament the previous year, but was not a back to back defending champion otherwise he would be introduced as the two time defending champion. He won the tournament twice but not two times in a row like Daniel did
@kingchrisa4188 Жыл бұрын
@@josephgallo3241 No actually in cobra Kai, Johnny mentions how he won in 82 against an unknown fighter and in 83, he won without losing a single point, beating his friend Tommy in the finals. So in 84 he was going for his 3rd straight
@josephgallo3241 Жыл бұрын
@@kingchrisa4188 This discussion is about the movies not the kobra Kai series. People asking how Daniel became back to back champions in Karate Kid 3? Clearly pointed in first Karate Kid movie by the match announcer that Johnny was a two time winner of the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament . It never mentioned he was a two time defending champion or back to back champion , so Daniel being declared the first back to back winner in KK3 is correct according to the movies. That is what this discussion is about, not the Kobra Kai series. Therefore my point is correct per the movie trilogy that Daniel was the first back to back champion of the tournament!

One thing that bothers me about this... Everyone says Daniel should have been disqualified for the crane kick because kicks to the face are illegal, but Johnny scores his first point with a kick to the face, and earlier in the tournament, Duitch is shown scoring a point against Daniel with a klick to the face... So I guess kicks to the face are only illegal if the hero does it...
