I know this quote wasn't in the video but my fav Miyagi quote which still speaks to me every day: "Daniel-san, never put passion before principle. Even if win . . . . you lose." WHAT I LEARNT: He's talking about compromising an invaluable part of one's self. A tradeoff to one's own detriment. QUOTE CONTEXT: Mr Miyagi was recalling when he was 18, he had broken tradition and dishonoured his best friend Sato by marrying a girl he loved Yuki who Sato was arranged to marry. Sato challenged Miyagi to a fight to regain his honour. PRINCIPLE: Miyagi didn't believe in fighting, or that violence, (possibly being killed) would solve the conflict. Rather than restoration, it would make matters worse by harbouring animosity and perpetuating future cycles of violence. Miyagi was taught to only use violence (Karate) in defence and as an absolute last resort, which he eventually agreed to when Sato threatened to destroy their village and sell the land if he didn't. Growing up Mr Miyagi fondly remembered the good memories of his childhood with Sato, a highly valued relationship. Mr Miyagi's actions, however, put him in a moral dilemma. He's forced to choose between his love for Yuki (PASSION) and its consequences which would result in a violent and possibly deadly confrontation with Sato, OR stay true to his (PRINCIPLE) of no fighting which due to Sato not being able to be reasoned with caused Miyagi reluctantly made the very difficult decision to leave Okinawa believing it to be the better of two evils. Principles are truth statements, and truth ties us to reality. We all build our lives on truth (principles), they inform our actions and help shape our worldviews. Passion, however, is an innate drive within that feeds on the specific desires of a person. (Good or bad) Passion should never be allowed unimpeded free reign over principle but must always be submissive to it. Allowing one's emotions alone to influence judgment and dictate actions, making decisions and acting in the heat of the moment is a disaster waiting to happen. If you allow passion to jeopardize principle (Truth) you risk undermining your own foundations. The two must work in unison.
@madblank4 жыл бұрын
This was one of the best ones. Ballance and principles/honor are the most important things imho.

@@wylie4637 Yeah. Then when we do violate our conscience with what we know we should do vs what we want to do, we often get a false sense of pleasure because there is sometimes no immediate consequence. The best Miyagism isn't shown in this video. It's the scene where Daniel and him first walk into the all valley tournament competition area. Upon entering, Daniel asks Mr. Miyagi where to go.
