The speculation about how dark Cobra Kai could have been and how nobody would have watched it reminded me of the film “Fighting Tommy Riley” Where the titular character’s coach is a closeted gay man who unsuccessfully tries to seduce the young boxer he trains. It’s a strange and depressing movie. It starts out feeling like a discount Rocky, and then ends up being an awkward, one sided “Remains of the Day” that nobody asked for. Nobody watched it except for me because I worked at a video rental store at the time. The internet says the film made only $10,000 at the box office, but I’m still convinced I’m the only human who’s seen it to this day.

One of my instructors in the 90s was my co worker on the graveyard shift in a production plant. He was a country bumpkin from Vietnam that happened to be an expert in Chinese martial arts. Quite often we were the only people there, so he trained me for 2 years, taught me all the bone breaking stuff you never see in regular martial art schools. Just a production worker working the graveyard shift. I'm indebted to him.

My first instructor and I had an interesting relationship, not like that. I was good friends with a few of his kids and was regularly at his house and his kids were regularly at my house so my family kinda got intertwined with his family. He became one of my dad's good friends, my instructor considered my dad to be like a brother. I considered his kids to be like my siblings, still do for that matter. He became like a second father to me. I even learned skills outside of martial arts from him as he was a rancher and I enjoy manual labor. However, I wasn't really his kid and when he started expecting me to act like his kid (he was verbally abusive and didn't let his kids question him as that was disrespectful) I pushed back because I was raised to question everything. Things got worse and worse and now we don't talk. I taught kids under him and those kids don't talk to me. Only 2 people from that school still talk to me. You can be friends with your instructor, but watch those boundaries. I wasn't wholly innocent in our falling out as I was a 20 year old kid that was suddenly given a lot of power and accidently almost took over his school, but that says something that his students would rather learn from me than him so.

Johnny Lawrence violently assaulted Daniel 3x: on the beach (1 on 1, jealousy, kind of acceptable) Halloween Dance (gang attack, no remorse, likely would've killed Daniel if Miyagi didn't show up); enthusiastically almost killed him (gang attack driving bike off the hill) But somehow he's the victim somehow or at least equally a victim as Daniel. If Cobra-Kai did less teen soap opera / bad comedy and looked more realistically at Johnny Lawrence rebuilding himself & the consequences of having a psycho sensei, it would've been a far better series. Zabka is a good actor. He could've pulled it off.

The first one Johnny was actually not trying to fight for most of it. The 2nd Daniel was spraying him in the bathroom first messed up his weed 😂 which was also after Daniel punched the guy on the soccer field and then Mr Miyagi beats up children which is definitely a felony.
@Mbq-sh6bj
@Mbq-sh6bj 2 жыл бұрын
@@lionmartialartsacademy4014 Johnny *did* fight for most of the first one: shoved radio to his chest to the ground, then two kicks & a back fist. Daniel rushed like a bull; bad tactic on his part but not the instigator. The second one was... a waste of weed. But also, getting wet is clearly less harmful (& acceptable retaliation, all things considered) than getting beaten up on a beach; assaulted on a soccer field; driven off a hill on a bike; or gang attacked after a Halloween dance. Daniel only punched the dude on the soccer field after he violently tripped him. And those children gang-attacked another child first, then attacked a senior just for being there (Miyagi didn't throw the first punch).

@@Mbq-sh6bj You are very correct. I don't know where people get this beating up children garbage. They are all high school seniors, some of whom might be 18, holding down and beating on 1 person. All Miyagi did was shove Daniel out of the way. Kobra Kai instigated every attack after that. The defenders of Johnny always ignore him shoving Daniel off a hillside just because he could. There is no defense of that one.

@@Mbq-sh6bj random guy shows up and try’s to snatch a radio out your hand and all you do is shove him. People get into fights for less when someone they don’t know try to snatch anything out of someone else’s hand. Also he tripped him the first couple times and was letting it go Daniel punched him then he punched and kicked back clearly showing he could’ve hurt him earlier and badly but was holding back It’s soccer those are soccer trips it happens the coach saw but threw Johnny out because he took it too far Imagine you minding your own business and someone spray a hose at you, there’s a video on the internet of this guy spraying a hose on his neighbors and his neighbors were messing with him and it made them mad enough to fight of course someone spraying you when you haven’t been doing anything would provoke a reaction. I don’t know where you’re from but we used to play king of the hill where we routinely threw people down hills, and this is after Daniel whom from Johnnys perspective was the instigator got his butt whooped and then wanted to join martial arts to get back at someone who he started the fight with in the first place. Ultimately Daniel didn’t know him or anyone at the new school and well intending people don’t go around inserting themselves in situations where they don’t belong. If Johnny was such a bad guy he would never honor the treaty even when Daniel was doing things to provoke a reaction. Johnny not perfect but Daniel isn’t all innocent either

@@aegisprotection4969 Thanks for the reply. Defenders of Johnny / Cobra Kai would all be singing an entirely different tune if all of their attacks actually happened to them in real life. But then the cop-out is "Well, it's just a movie. Don't take it so seriously" (but until being proven wrong, it wasn't just a movie somehow...). Forgot those kids were at least 17 or 18 years old. Most (regular) folks that are Miyagi's age would definitely feel intimidated by one teen of that age (never mind five of them & all highly-trained in combat). How many late-50s / early-60s folks are fit, never mind combat ready? Even some mid-30s people are already out of shape & vulnerable. But we also live in the age of everyone being a victim ("whaaaaaa, I want sympathy too even though I did harm!"). But also we live in a time when exploring bad guys' motives as part of pop culture leads to new & interesting story lines. After all, even bad guys don't think they're bad guys (just like defenders of Johnny Lawrence don't see themselves as defending a bully even though when we look at the obvious details, that's all they're doing). Think of how much folks wanted to see how Darth Vader became who he became.

I attended a ITF Korean Karate school from 1981 to 1983. It was a old school, hardcore dojang, with hardwood floors, no hand or feet pads, ,no air conditioning and each class ending with the students conditoning their knockles by pounding into bricks or the floor, it was geared to adult training. I alway felt that the Karate Kid movie turned most schools into Daddy Day care, I understand that is where the money is and to stay open you have to cater to your market,but the training has been deluded, even in the adult classes.

Thr "make chores as training" is an older trope than karate kid... There are various old japanese stories with the same concept... My favorite is also super dumb... A guy went to a sword master to learn how to fight with swords... And the master told him he would teach him if he did anything he asked for for some years, dont remember how many, lets say 3..... And git him to clean and cook... And first few months did nothing to train him... Then suddenly attacjed him with a boken... And hir him in the head... And reoeated that until the guy could defend himself with whatever he git at hand... Be it a spoon, a broom, whatever... And after the time passed told him.he had nothing else to teach him Its taken as a story of great samurai training... But i see just abuse, broken boned and and brain damage

Don't really remember much of the original, but I like the newer one with Jackie Chan. But I do know a few things about the overall story of the original that was actually really good to see in a movie. (They of course still could have done a shitty job making the movie tho) butt so the real man who pretty much started/invented karate was actually named miyagi, he invented gojo Ryu karate after traveling to China and learning various martial arts there. As well as you can clearly see miyagis training was much different than the other opponents in the movies training. (Now I'm pretty sure nobody in the newer film actually used any "karate") but the style used by Daniel in the original film is technically majority a Chinese martial art. White crane and wing Chun, being where it got the name gojo Ryu. Which means hard/soft
