The Carpenters

5 ай бұрын

Her uniquely beautiful voice won the hearts of millions. As part of the Carpenters along with brother Richard, Karen Carpenter seemed to have it all, success, fame, adulation and an inspirational talent.
But her dream life was to end in tragedy.
This powerful and moving Emmy Award nominated film tells the inside story of the Carpenters, the group that sold over 100 million albums and singles and enjoyed a record fifteen U.S. Number One hit songs.
Starring Cynthia Gibb as Karen Carpenter and Mitchell Anderson as Richard, it reveals how a shy, weight conscious Karen was forced out is from behind the security of her drum kit and into the spotlight. As fame and pressure increased, her reaction was anorexia.
Karen Carpenter's story is revealed featuring an unrivalled film soundtrack that includes original Carpenters recordings of their finest songs, including Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, We’ve Only Just Begun, Top of the World, This Masquerade, Superstar, For All We Know and many more.

I remember when I was just 20 yrs old, spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon sitting in the grass on a hill at the Garden state arts center in NJ. Was with my best friend we saw the Carpenters for the first time. That was when I knew Karen Carpenter was an excellent singer and my favorite. Today, I am 73 yrs old, still have my best friend, and we both love the Carpenters.

He was very talented. She was a better singer and he played and wrote music. They were both talented. He had the confidant that she didn't have for herself. Don't blame him for that. Their mom being more for him really isn't his fault either. He was a bit much at time and a real butt, but he was talented.

There will never ever be another Karen Carpenter 😢 I absolutely blame that selfish Mother that had no compassion showed no Love to Karen. A girl needs the love of her Mother. I read where she favored Richard. She made her get married even tho at the last minute Karen changed her mind and didn’t want to marry. She was cruel. All Karen wanted was to be Loved. I could write more but it was the Mothers fault that Karen did this to herself. I know from experience.

As one who looks fir valudation from my own mother and never get it i relate to her story so much. I too have a brother who was glorified by her while anything i did was past over. Karen only wanted to be loved and validated by her own mother so so desparately. She even looked for richards approval she was so proud of him. Fame was a constant pressure cooker in her life. At the height of the carpenters career they were barely home at all being on the road and excausted. Richard developed an addiction to qualudes and karen became so obsessed with her weight as thats the only thing she could control. Her life was sp tragic and it makes me cry to see how such a woman with brilliant talents ended up dead on her floor a little over 30. There will never be another singer like karen, she had a natural gift to sing with such emotional fortitude without being over the top. And fir me no other singer matches that ability except maybe phyllis hyman whose low tone notes were just as captivating as karens. I swear karens lows just floor me. I miss her. At times listening to the carpenters leaves me in tears ❤❤❤❤❤❤😢😢😢😢😢😢 Rip karen... voice of an angel for a generation.

But my passion was singing. My sweet friend, who played the piano, has been gone a very long time. But listening to the Carpenters brings back so much more than memories. I've kept from watching this movie. And watching it now, has just been precious. Karen left this world way too young. The Carpenters were huge back in the 70's and early 80s I like the song On Top Of The World and Close To You Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice and she wasn't ugly she made herself ugly by wasting food and not eating.. so sad what happened to her everyone knew that she had an eating disorder she needed help. This isn't accurate. Karen did a solo album with Ramones producer when Richard was in rehab. She worked hard on it and was so proud 👏 She played ot for Richard and he hated it. The only thing she ever did on her own and her brother was so disappointed in her singing song selection lyrics and type of music. This devastated her because she adored Richard and was always awed by his talent. I sometimes wonder if Richard was just jealous that she accomplish something on her own without his help. She thought the material was far too seductive fir Karen to perform with songs about sex and longing. He had worked so hard to craft an image of the carpenters and Karen style and this record destroyed that in his eyes. The record was shelved for many years until Ling after her death it was finally released. I actually have it on cd. I love it. No it's not as you except Karen to sing but never the less it's beautiful. It has a since of maturity both in style and lyrical content. The carpenters was a clean image. Even in the song superstar which was a cover Richard changed the lyrics to suit that image having Karen sing " and I can hardly wait to be with you again" instead of the orginal lyrics which read " I can hardly wait to sleep with you again" reasoning that such lyrics were too racy fir Karen to be singing suggesting she might be " easy" or " loose" for back in the 70s many people engaged in causal sex which is the timeline of this hit. So much effort to present the carpenters as super squeaky clean all-American kids singing beautiful love songs. Karen once replied she hated those Long gowns down to her ankles but thats how the producers wanted them to appear. Check your albums close to you covers makes them look like their on their honeymoon almost incestuous since they are brother and sister. The pressure to maintain that which you are not to be a Maga successful act can drive you mad. That intense pressure created issues for both of them. Karen demise was a shocking event because she returned from the hospital with a positive prognosis, however eating disorders were much more a mystery with so little medical studies being conducted. The treatment was to gain weight not to received independence psychological counceling and work on family dynamics to get to root of problem. And from what I read Karen died because she gained weight far too fast and it put a strain on her heart which just wasn't strong enough due to long term damaged caused by her abuse of laxatives and suppositories and ipacak. There are no easy answers to such a complicated disease which affects you physically and mentally. And maybe because you strive yourself including your own brain you can't apply logical processes because you don't have enough nutrition for proper brain functioning. It's like a dominio effect. All we really know is that eating disorders had to be treated both on a physical level and a psychological one to be effective. Is haunting that if they didn't discharge Karen so early their could have been a chance to save her.😢

Karen has a beautiful, one of a kind voice. I wish I could enjoy her music again. My Mom used to play it on the way to lessons and horse shows. Some bad things happened and damage was done- when I hear this voice and the beautiful arrangements , I just feel creeped out. I’m so sorry.

Anyone can become reasonably proficient on a musical instrument , of course Richard was indeed inspired and talented. But a voice is a gift from God. Millions of people sing but Karen Carpenter had a very special voice. Personally I find her voice incredibly soothing and warm . Perhaps because she was also a drummer this added a certain rhythmic precision to her phrasing and vibrato. ❤I’ve only known a very few people who had a true gift for anything and of those few it didn’t always bring them happiness.

@@TheSoleProprietor Exactly! To say Karen's life was wasted is not very kind nor accurate. The fact that we still enjoy her music & mourn her passing shows that her life DID have meaning. Its sad indeed that she died, particularly from the vile insidious affliction of anorexia.....but often people can create a legend in the time they are here on Earth. Karen did this.

It is so tragic that Karen passed on from emotional issues that became the vile insidious affliction of anorexia. It can start being about weight, but it has nothing to do with this....not after a while. The affliction literally 'changes' your brain. You are unable to see how starved you look, how you are destroying your body, you even cease to become hungry. I know....because I suffered from it. I had never been heavy, but my friends all were obsessed with weight so I dieted too. As I got more slender, everyone complimented me....something I seldom to never got from them. I had always been shy & socially-awkward from bullying.....so I could not see these people were not likely true friends. Suddenly my parents' fighting escalated into a pending divorce, I was crushed. College began & I had no idea how to handle it....having come from a small, ill-run high school. Weight began to become the only thing I could control. No one noticed how thin I was becoming, not even me. I stopped being hungry, I often lived on a bagel & black coffee most days. I was exhausted constantly, my hair began to thin. Yet I couldn't see it. Anorexia CHANGES YOUR BRAIN.....you literally cannot see how emaciated you are becoming. I believe God let me 'see myself' one day, getting out of the shower.....I saw what I could not see before...my ribs sticking out, my breasts gone, my hair thinned. I literally said out loud, almost in tears: "What are you doing to yourself?!!" I vowed to get healthy....it took WEEKS to even feel hungry again, to eat without feeling nauseous. I fought the battle alone, I told no one. I became healthy, at last. It took time. But I tell anyone who will listen: If you're suffering with anorexia or bulimia, please know it can be all right. Your brain CAN heal. God bless.

I'm glad to hear the announcement at the beginning of this very poor version of this movie stating that it's certainly NOT THE MOST ACCURATE MOVIE ABOUT KAREN. I watched the movie when it first aired but noticed some changes when I watched it again a few weeks ago. Too many deleted scenes such as when Tom Burris was abusing Karen as well as many other important and significant events in her life.😢

It wasn't just because someone called her fat. No one comment ever 'makes' someone become anorexic. Karen already had issues & anorexia is a SYMPTOM of underlying issues. It can start being about weight, but it has nothing to do with this....not after a while. The affliction literally 'changes' your brain. You are unable to see how starved you look, how you are destroying your body, you even cease to become hungry. I know....because I suffered from it. @@DeborahMoffett I know it stated that in the film, but that was dramatized for the film.....just like the final sequence. Richard has stated that 'no one catalyst started her anorexia.' @dominewimbury2039, that isn’t accurate. He was a brilliant composer and had a successful career after the devastation of losing his sister that he was so close to. He was in a tough spot. He adored Karen and he understood how their mother’s obsessions hurt Karen. But he could not as a son blast his mother and tell that publicly. He was proud of Karen and spent many years after her death promoting tributes and working to see that her legacy endured.
