On June 9th 2018, the Colorado Eagles defeated the Florida Everblades in game 7 of the ECHL playoff finals to clinch their second consecutive Kelly Cup championship. Though the usual traditions would see them hold onto the trophy over the summer months and during the start of the regular season before returning the award to the league before the end of the calendar years, thanks to some off-ice politics, the team would end up holding onto the trophy for far longer than anyone would expect...

I was at the Game 6 Kelly Cup game when my Newfoundland Growlers won.. best game I've ever attended. The Growlers will be a very strong team for many years. When the ECHL returns to its normal form.. unlike what it is right now with about 10-12 teams playing right now, Newfoundland will be back on top.

Thank you for covering the single greatest hockey legend/ story of the last 10 years. I originally heard of this listening to SDP, while I had previously known the eagles had been champions. I had thought the situation was related to the move to the AHL this video is the Ultimate confirmation.

They're also the farm squad to the Marlies and part of the Maple Leafs organization. (St. John's used to be the St. John's Maple Leafs for many years in the AHL until they ultimately went back to Toronto)

Ah the Eagles. Before they were an ECHL or even an AHL team they played in the CHL. Central Hockey League. Basically Single-A hockey. The last team to have ever really beaten them in a league championship series is now a junior team in the North American Hockey League

Buffalo could definitely use its own ECHL team. The Amerks are good in Rochester to give them something. We have the JR Sabres in the OJHL, but we could definitely support a full OHL team or an ECHL team. I love the Sabres, but I love all the hockey I can get

This whole thing makes me wonder which trophy the Growlers players took to their respective hometowns. One of them on that team, forward Todd Skirving, is from my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario. As for Vegas, they've since gotten a new AHL affiliate, that in the form of the Henderson Silver Knights.

ECHL is pretty decent hockey and fun to watch. The top lines have AHL talent and 2nd to 4th line talent would be like mid NCAA teams .NCAA top 15 teams have more over all talent but would say average ECHL team is like a 15 to 30th NCAA team

I remember this it was always about the league exit fee. And every team pays the one million to join. But you forgot to mention The Eagles were the only team that sold out every game in the CHL and ECHL there attendance was way better than any other team so it was really just spare change for them.

I live in CO, and am a huge avs fan, but I've never payed much attention to the eagles. Maybe I should start now tho lol. BTW you should make a vid on the avs vs kings stadium series game last year. I went to it and the whole event was a huge disaster and an ugly display of poor planning.

I might have another weird that could be a good idea for another video. Wasn’t there a time some players stopped to see if their car was ok, but forgot to take The Stanley Cup with them when they resumed their trip? Edit- I’ve heard this mentioned, but never accompanied any details about who was involved, or where this happened.

I drank out of the Kelly cup in 2017 or 2018 . I was golfing in a charity event in Colorado ( I don’t golf I’m a wounded veteran and the charity was for wounded vets ) and on one of the holes we saw all these dudes partying on a pontoon boat well we called them over and it was I believe the Colorado team they came on land with the cup and let us drink out of it. I had brain surgery because I got shot in the helmet in the war and I was pretty soft almost couldn’t lift it and tip it to drink but I did Cool dudes and a cool experience

New-Found-Land. Also teams moving between leagues has nothing to do with how good their results are. There is no promotion/relegation of any kind. It's only about money and sometimes with the AHL proximity to the parent club.

Not entirely true. While you are sort of right about results, the decision to absorb an existing team into a higher level league is complex. Yes, proximity to a parent club is a factor. However, it is not a huge factor. The bigger factors are quality of the facilities, fan support and franchise stability. One can easily make an argument that those three things are directly linked to on ice success. A team can be in a perfect location with crappy facilities, zero fan support and constant ownership upheaval and they will not even be thought about for absorption.

My guess is the Eagles lost the cup or one of the players had it and didn't return it to the team.

Nope. It was about money. The Eagles had to pay $500,000 to the ECHL to leave the league and move to the AHL. The owner of the Eagles was pissed that the ECHL collected that fee and then sold an expansion franchise to Newfoundland for $1,000,000 to replace the Eagles. He contended that the league should have let him negotiate with Newfoundland instead. He claimed he could have gotten $800,000 from the deal. He then decided to hold the Kelly Cup hostage until the ECHL refunded his $500,000 exit fee. Long story short, the owner of the Eagles is a petulant asshole.

You are right. But you know what the letters originally stand for: East Coast Hockey League. Otherwise it could be XYZL or BPGL with arbitrary letters in its name, only L as League meaning something.
