Two lovers, one is a monster, known for bringing down people to their deaths, puts a spell on a girl, falls in love with her, grants her wish to bring back the princes, and she marrys someone else. This truely is sad. The story of a monster in love with a mortal. Well I’m making a fanfic now

That is so true! There's another version of the story where the Kelpie is instead enslaved as a horse for a year by the girl he tried to seduce and steal away. After the year is up she takes him to a Wizard who removes the magical bridle she put on him. He asks the Kelpie if he wants to be freed and returned to sea, but the Kelpie says no, he has fallen in love with the girl and would rather be mortal and live with her, and she accepts. I like that one a little better, because it has a bit more of a happy ending :) And soften the Kelpie a little bit. I'm sad, sad, sap XD

After a year she begins to feel sorry for him and takes him to a local witch to help her break the curse she had put on him. The witch simply asks "Do you wish to be a man, or remain a beast?" and he answers, "A man, for I have fallen in love with my caretaker." He's turned into an ordinary man and they live happily ever after. Still weird, but no as messed up as the original one XD

Um, did people not find out that the myth of the Kelpie actually originated in Norse myths but was later on adopted into celtic after vikings who went to Scotland settled there? Or am I mistaken about that? Cuz that is what I have heard about the myth
@AbsurdandFantastical3 жыл бұрын
Hey! There have been some similarities noted between the Kelpie and the bäckahäst from Scandinavia. However, to claim that the Kelpie comes wholly from Norse mythology is a bit of a stretch. Celtic tribes come from a wide variety of cultures even possibly from Israel, and the Kelpie was possibly concocted to keep children away from the marshy swamps that are so part of the Celtic landscape. The Nucklevee is another example of a creature possibly created from the Orkney stories and the Norse settlers. However, in the Orkney isles, they saw many a seafarer from Norway come by. So the stories were shared and so changed to fit in. In short, it could be from Norse myths, but I am personally inclined to believe otherwise :)

Nah, I don’t think so. I mean, both the Celts and Norse have been in the Far North for a very, very long time. I’d say both were created by their own people, but it wouldn’t surprise me that people are trying to claim the story came from one place solely. People have a tendency to do that and I hate it, its like the more people can claim the better their past was. Can’t we all just be happy with the fact that each people of the far past had things that made us all so interesting?
@whitestar7641 Жыл бұрын
I love this story, even though I can find the Kelpie morally wrong in a few cases. The first, stealing the 6 Princes I can write off as it being his nature; but bewitching Dianaimh, it would have been better to hide what he was for a time and show her he had a good heart at least for her. Then she may have loved him in the end even after finding out who he was and what he did, he would have returned the 6 Princes because they truly loved each other. Though I wish he would have told Dianaimh about what he did to the Lady at the festival (forgive me but I can’t spell that name), that he decided to punish her for her wicked heart. In the future, he would only punish those with evil in their hearts, allowing all who were good to pass by with his blessing, possibly even helping them. If anything, the Kelpie caused the ending to himself. I actually want to use this tale as the backstory to a character in a fictional writing with some friends, that he did take the 6 Princes as he was a rebellious Dark Kelpie. But Dianaimh’s love made him regret his fall and he began to desire to atone for his wrongs. The story plays out as it does, but when Dianaimh marries Donald, the Kelpie’s heart is so broken that he atones to his family for all the wrong he had done in becoming a Dark Kelpie and desiring to win his throne by war. After he does this he falls into a long slumber of which he perishes upon Dianaimh’s death. Though many many years later he is reborn by the power of the sea and falls in love with another mortal woman. Though he is afraid to fully give his heart to her, for when he does, he will forget Dianaimh and all his past life to begin anew. Eventually his love for her becomes so unbearable that he lets go of who he was and does forget, gaining a new life, and the forces of Primal Magic make his love an immortal with him that they shall never part from each other.
