The problem with Game Score is that, as an amalgam of individual metrics, it is heavily dependent upon the team performance, system, and competition. When your co-stars shrink, or the system feeds you, your score will inflate. Two people on a team will struggle to put up high Game Scores in the same game. Also, thirty is a wild cutoff, I'm pretty sure a lot of great, team leading individual performances in wins are in the twenties. This is just my immediate impression, I'm a few minutes into the video.

Comparing the finals appearances of Curry and KD in 2017, where Curry almost averaged a triple double at 6'3 with 27ppg, and saying there is no contest is crazy. I still think KD deserved finals mvp sure, but Curry played well, and we actually thought he was gonna win it until game 3 where he shot super poorly and ruined his chances. His first 2 games were good though Edit: I mixed up 2018 with 2017, so my bad. But in 2018, until game 3 where Curry played poorly and Kd dropped 43, he was getting that FMVP consideration. So to make it seem like KD was just clearly the best player and running the bus is just not true. Part of the reason he left is because everyone viewed it as Curry's team, and would compare how the team performed without Curry (worse) to without KD (not better but didn't start losing games).

the game score metric is very friendly to players that fill a stat sheet. even though the formula is linear when looking at how basketball actually works it is INCREDIBLY difficult to break 30 just becuase of the break down of the formula like you need to attempt a bunch of free throws and make them, get offensive and defensive rebounds and do basically everything. I agree gamscore is a good metric but his cutoff at 30 is way too high. he should be looking at 25 imo.

The game score stat may be inherently flawed but it’s almost like a how a weighted forecast for predictions work, where there is a weighted value attributed to each stat to give a sense of how much one person contributed to that particular game. Obviously where it becomes flawed is how much weight you put on to each stat and whether or not you believe one should be valued over the other. Very interesting advanced stat tho and should be messed with more for optimization.

I dont know too much about this stat but I've already realised that it values 2s more than it values 3s. For example if someone scored 36 points on 30 shots by only hitting 3s and doing nothing else no assists rebounds steals... that's a gamescore of 19.8 while if someone had 36 points on 30 shots by only scoring two pointers and doing nothing else that's a game score of 22.2
@j.isbell032 жыл бұрын
That's because scoring 36 points on only 30 shots using 2 pointers is more efficient. If you score 36 on 30 shots using 3 pointers only, that's 12/30, which is 40%. Idk why the least respected advanced stats(PER, win shares, and Game score) are the main ones that are used on youtube. All-in-one stats have flaws in general, but the better ones(epm, pipm) at least try to approximate non-boxscore impact. The best advanced stats are ones that use play-by-play data so they don't have as much historical record. The best one that is purely from the boxscore is probably bpm as it tries to use the boxscore to approximate RAPM

Luka's GameScore is heavily inflated by the fact that he's a guard that gets rebounds so they count for more. It's just a way of adding up box score stats, which is why KD has crazy scores playing with the Warriors who were a 73-9 team without him, he was filling up the stat sheet
@Grandmaster_Vic2 жыл бұрын
I always knew KD wasn’t the leader like Lebron is but I’m not gonna say he never carried a team, last years playoffs was a great example where dude played every minute of every game while his 2 co stars where hurt or playing with one leg and he was a big toe away of taking the nets to the conference finals. This year was disaster for the nets due not having the time to really gel as a collective group and to be comfortable in their roles. I don’t like the narrative of KD looking like a scrub who just rode a easy ring where KD still had to perform the way he does in order to get those rings remember.

LeBron is a better leader then kd? No.
@drcheesepuff38052 жыл бұрын
I mean that’s what he did tho, he joined a stacked warriors team and won 2 easy rings where he could’ve played ass and still would’ve won. Of course he would perform amazing on the warriors when you have all the attention on curry and not KD. Besides 2012 he hasn’t proved he can carry a team or even win as the undisputed main option. Him and kyrie have chemistry already they both just played ass and got swept. The last time he got to the Conference finals without GS was in 2016 and he underperformed there too. He’s accomplished as much as James harden has without GS and he almost denied them of a ring in 2018. Even last year he had a chance but he choked in OT. So nah bro KD is not him

Thank you. An actually nuanced take amongst a sea of overreaction. Did the Nets get smoked? Definitely. Did KD look awful for 3 of those games? Absolutely. Is KD a "leader"? No and he never was. That being said. Is KD still one of the best offensive players of all time? Yes. Will KD still be a top 10 player in the NBA next season? Yes. Is KD still a top 25 NBA player of all time? Yes. It was 4 games people. Stop trying to discredit this mans entire career off 4 games.

I think the thing about “it’s a fact they probably would not have won more titles” is that the “fact” isn’t about “not winning” (which would make the sentence completely false like you said) but rather that the “chances of not winning being low” is a fact, which I don’t know where he got that stat but the sentence does make sense logically. It’s like saying “it’s a fact that there’s a 50-50 probability of getting heads when flipping a coin”.

*Short explanation:* Game Score HEAVILY weighs in favor of efficient, high level scoring & offensive production. *Longer explanation:* 😅 It's really NOT as holistic as ppl suggest. The formula penalizes FT MISSES but doesn't credit FT makes (it technically does by giving crediting your points, but it fails to account for you giving the other team a foul; ironic cause the formula penalizes your own fouls...). This means getting to the line a ton, another form of efficient scoring, isn't actually rewarded, jusy penalized when u miss. So somebody like James Harden prolly doesn't have a lot of absurdly high gamescore games (I'm assuming). Also, it penalizes high volume attempts....but NOT whether or not you missed the shot...? (Thats fundamentally not how basketball works). It also only uses steals & blocks to talk about defense, but weighs a steal as more impactful than a block and uses no other defense metrics. Very biased in favor of efficient high volume scoring, hence why CP3's 22pt 11ast 1TO game in the vid didn't have a 30 GmSc

This is gonna be a little long; I think we all can agree that KD struggled against Boston, and the sweep is obviously not good, but some of this takes are so bad bruh. Like, I could point out how some NBA “fans” will hold certain players on so high of a pedestal, that when they don’t meet THEIR expectations, now they’re trash but I digress. Again, some of these takes: since when is KD a bum? Since when did KD just fall out of the top 5 of current players? Hell, many claimed he isn’t even top 20! Like, What!? If that ain’t recency bias I don’t know what is. Even if you want to argue a list of that caliber can be fluid, I don’t believe you. Before GS, KD was elite. Constantly between him and LeBron. He won a MVP in a time when you could agrue LeBron could’ve won it, in a Western Conference with the still dominant Spurs, up and coming GS, a steady Clippers team, and the Harden led Rockets. Not making excuses, just adding context. And the Thunder were consistently in at least the second round of the playoffs or the WCF, unless he and or Westbrook were hurt. And granted, the GS move was weak, and if you want to hold that against him forever, fine. But don’t act like he was just twiddling his thumbs on a free ride. Dude balled out, and was balling out in the first 6 minutes of the 2019 finals until he got hurt, which I distinctly remember people clamoring for him to remember if GS had any shot of winning. Funny how that has been forgotten. AND let’s not forget these these two seasons (2020 he was hurt all year so it doesn’t count), where he was literally a toe of the line away from beating the championship winning Bucks without Kyrie and a hobbled Harden. And in 2021, he missed significant time due to a MCL sprain that dropped them several spots in the standings. Again, he didn’t play well, granted. Should he be criticized for the performance? Absolutely. But is he a bum because of one bad playoff series? Absolutely not. That’s why the hate is ridiculous.
