Some English speakers who can't grasp the concept of tonal languages, consider the homophone "can" in English which can be a noun or verb but have different stress accents/intonation: Can Cān "càn-cán" while cànning a căn?

My "ear" is not very good and I've had such a hard time distinguishing between the tones--this is the first explanation that's really made sense! Especially the surprised/unbelievable/angry "what" examples. That's so intuitive to me and I never even noticed! 😅

I am a US citizen who lived and worked in China for 8 years. My work was possible only through professional translation. Socially, I found mandarin quite difficult to learn, even with one on one instruction, which I attended for two years. The reality was that my work made it difficult to apply adequate time to study. As a result, my command of mandarin never expanded. Now I'm back in the states with my wife, who is Chinese (Speaks perfect English). I'm not off the hook as I must improve on my mandarin in order to communicate better with my wife's family, who don't speak English. That being said, I'm certainly glad to have found your channel and hope to take my mandarin studies more seriously and consistently. Starting with tone! Thank you!! 👍
