Watching your video, I suddenly noticed that the composition of the beach painting is almost perfectly done in a golden ratio. Shame that I can't comment with a picture, because it tried it out in Photoshop and you would surprised to see how well it follows that rule. That might also be another reason why people like it.

Chris has taught me so many useful skills that I continue to use when I paint. He clearly states what is important for each painting session he teaches on Patreon. He is consistent in his approach and what makes his videos so important to me is that I can watch them in an hour and get the painting done that same day. I find that I get better and better with each session and that the proof is in the paintings I have done and the positive comments they receive.. If you are considering trying a Patreon subscription for a month, it would be well worth it IMO to see if its for you.

As an artist myself, I constantly try to challenge myself every time I paint and I just loooove creating amazing compositions but this video really helps on how I must perceive my art when It comes to the viewer. Really helpful thank you so much! Also What I really like about this painting of yours is that you also dragged some green into the sky and it kind of really drag the hole painting as one and not multiple subjects that don’t align together, also help to relax the eyes a bit and to rely even more on the vocal point of this masterpiece ❤

This is so good PC-Forza. Simple, tight breakdown of some of the most critical concepts for bringing a painting together. I am already transferring this little session to a painting I'm working on. I will have to re-work a bunch of shadow areas to solve some things in my latest piece. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

Great video, Chris! I particularly love your channel for the compositional coaching that you provide. The encouragement, examples (of good and bad), as well as the practicalities of using source material as a guide to ultimately produce a really great and memorable painting that's not a plain copy of the original is fantastic. You always help shake me out of my natural "copyist" habit that was great to build skills (initially) but really is just the first, basic step on the way to great art. Perfect is not necessarily interesting or memorable. For instance, even photographers retouch photos! Love your soft realism work. Cheers!

I like my landscapes to have a human element, not just nature. For instance, a painting of the Matterhorn dominating the background with some ancient human-built structures in the foreground. The sharp straight lines of buildings contrast the irregularities of the mountainous vista.

Very interesting, and clearly explained. One small comment: for me, the painting would be stronger without the little human figure. I understand that the figure gives scale, but I think that removing it places the observer further "into" the painting. The observer then places himself/herself into the scene, rather than observing a figure observing the scene, if you get my drift. Anyway, your videos are very helpful. Cheers.

The one thing that's always been difficult for me is composition. Years in art school did nothing to improve it. So this is great. Thanks very much for the free guide. I just got it and I will take a good look at it tomorrow. This will give me something to look forward to the rest of the summer! I wanted to ask what kind of camera you use. I used a DSLR for years then just started using my phone camera recently. I also paint "imaginary" scenes such as illustrations for children's books, undersea compositions and that sort of thing. I have to make them up. So having an idea what looks best is going to help. Thanks again!

Great vid. However, you say you need the rocks to push you into the scene more, whereas they pull me out (different direction): my eyes get attracted to the 'noise' in the corner and thus move from the focal point outwards... Isn't it about striking a balance between bits that grab your attention and the shape of the bits/ edges leading you to the focal point? Not sure the rocks do this for you but they do provie a nice balance; otherwise you'd never get 'unstuck' from the focal point.

I believe that you over cropped. Everything in the original photo leads the viewer’s eye to the lightest light and the darkest dark, which is at the top of the reverse “C” shape. For my taste, I would have included all of the reversed “C” shape which helps lead the eye to, and emphasize the strongest part of the painting. Just a thought, and beautiful painting nonetheless.
