I suspect they mean that they don't know how to use black, so they compensate by making a rule never to use it. Black is easy to use if you know how it works.

Black is a great color to use correctly. It is the darkest dark, hence many advise 'not to use it' as people often go overboard with using it and lose all realism and shades in the shadows of their painting - but do use it - sparingly - best time is at the end of the painting. Just like highlights with the whitest whites in the eyes. Only as much where needed.

I tried doing a portrait in oils for the first time and it was the terminator reference you gave (I wouldn't have to do many facial features) and something I learned really quickly is that the black works wonders.

OMG the universe must have been listening to my life crisis yesterday, THANK YOU COACH! This gave me the momentum to keep going again today. It seems like lately....everything I've worked for has vanished into a cold oblivion. Right when I felt like I was getting better, POOF gone. Had me questioning myself and my potential, my confidence had been reduced to a little crumb. lol I try to always remind myself of what you said, "Learning to paint isn't a linear process". I know you have to get past the emotional disappointment/fear to keep going, even when its crushing. All I know is that, I'll keep on stabbing in the dark until I get something. lol

Hi Lydia, I tell everyone that they can paint, you just have to keep going until your vision comes. We can always paint over something. I did a portrait of my sister and it took 3 days to figure out that her right cheek was 1/4 inch too wide. Fixed it and boom! There she was! Keep going, you can do it!

If you were painting a full portrait, would you have mixed up the flesh tones in different values ahead of starting so you have them available and don't have to stop and mix all the time? Thanks for the demo - saw so many new things.

Hey Coach! Do you have any thoughts/recommendations on taking breaks? I paint every day, 7 days a week, it's quite literally my life, my passion, everything. If I'm not painting, I'm drawing or learning, thinking about how to get better, etc. I consider this a hobby but also my job,(working on my craft) as it keeps me busy the entire day. Often feels like I'm out here treading water trying to stay afloat lol, sometimes the stress/pressure robs me of the joy in the process. I don't take breaks unless I'm sleeping or eating dinner, I consider that to be the "break". Do you have any thoughts or advice on this?? Do you need to sometimes step away for a day or so?? I'm afraid to do that, plus it makes me think I'm being lazy. Is it OK to do that? Can you push yourself too much sometimes, causing you to actually slow down and lose skill?? Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much for all the work you do. :)

I've watched a lot of your videos and what stands out to me is the colors you choose all look darker than the reference to me. I know you likely see value much better than I do but why such dark colors - like the sclera which looks way too gray to me. Plus some painters never paint the punta but it seems like an important structure. Do you not paint it for a reason? Thanks so much. I'm thinking of signing up for one of your classes but I paint with acrylic so I'm not sure it's a good fit.

Excellent content (as always). Question: How would the process change if you wanted to paint the entire face? I understand the eye is an isolated feature, but what would change if you started from the general shapes/planes of the face? Would you paint the face and then each feature individually, or would you refine them all gradually? Thank you for the content you have been making!
@paintcoach
@paintcoach 6 ай бұрын
Good question and its funny you ask that because I actually find it harder to paint an eye isolated like in this demo because I don't have the rest of the face and shapes and planes to help me place the eye. I normally block out the face and develop everything around the eyes before placing them in.
