Great vid for amateurs' who want to improve their understanding of sail's trimming. It is amazing how few videos there are on this topic, considering amount of people buying yachts. For those who look for a good book for sails trim I'd recommend Felix Marks - best sail trim book I read.

Thank you good stuff! it always helps to have a detailed refresher. Properly trimmed boat is such a great feeling. The other day I was on a J105 in flat water about eight knots of wind and we had the sails so beautifully trimmed on a close reach that the helm remain stationary when I let go. I was in awe and it was spectacular.

Lovely boat, very well explained. Try Quantum Sails tutorials one day to be convinced. I noticed the backstays....and the fathead. By personal experience; a busy combination! The one tutorial I haven't found yet, is how to use those together well in different conditions. On open Oceans it's ok. On busy waters however...

Thanks. Wasn't sure. It's a bloody beauty....getting more expensive by the day apparently

also you can use twist to power (stalling the base) or depower (stalling the top=less heeling and turbulence drag) the sail top area this info is found in airplane wing twist, that is mostly used to control stall and parasitic wing tip drag

Excellent video, thank you so much. Can you talk a little about mast bend? Especially when your boat has running and standing backstays. I never know if I’m supposed to use the running back stay to keep the middle of the mast straight and use the main backstay to pull the top of the mast back to help flatten the main sail. . Thanks again.
@martygingras86832 жыл бұрын
If what you are calling a 'running backstay' will straighten your mast when the standing backstay is pulled on tightly, then it's what we'd call a 'checkstay' and that's how you are supposed to use the two. Flatten both sails by pulling on the standing backstay, then --- if the main is too flat --- tension the checkstay to power-up the main to achieve the balance you want.

DEPTH? Are we confusing it with draft {camber)? What about angle of attack? It is first and foremost to beating.

Thanks Charlie, nice vid. Looking at the mainsail the top batten was falling to leeward on every shot. I was always taught that the top batten should be parallel to the boom. Perhaps it is different with fathead mains?
@yigalglebrozval65333 жыл бұрын
It should be twisted leeward - wind's speed is higher up there. Sail should be twisted, same way plane's propeller is twisted.

at 6:59 he says it's a 500kg forestay tension change. The display went from 1.2-ish to 1.7-ish so that display was in metric tonnes

The missing element to low mast compression for light winds (when you are seeking more power) is twist in the main? We are trying to take twist out of the main when seeking power by lowering the traveler and sheeting on the main to close the upper leech of the main. Inevitably this extra main sheet tension adds tension to the forestay, how do we balance this?
@martygingras86832 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan. (1) Twist in light wind is to account for the usual and sometimes very significant wind speed gradient (and thus apparent wind angle gradient) from top to bottom. W/o twist, the top tends to stall. (2) When I trim main on the E 37 in light winds, I pull the traveler above centerline and ease the sheet to get the twist we want w/o reducing angle of attack. (3) Proper mainsheet tension on the E 37 in light wind won't appreciably load the headstay.

Great for folks that sail in 10kts. what is the north set up for Beaufort wind force scale of 5 (over 20kts) with this system in heavy sea chop? I just saw a new 3300 reefed get tossed on its ear with poor pointing ability in those conditions.
@rydenkaye9735 Жыл бұрын
In windier conditions you want a more twisted mainsail to both spill power up high where it’s less effective (because it’s higher up it tips the boat more and you’re power limited by righting moment) and also to widen your grove to allow for steering for waves. Having a more twisted sail means a portion of the sail remains powered at a wider range of apparent wind angles allowing you to keep power while heading up and bearing off to reduce slamming in waves

My Gawd, whom is this video for? People who are learning to sail will not be considering a "Smart Tune" for the forestay on their 40 year old Sonar. OK... let's get on with your commercial... The rest of the info is pretty good and I'll share this with my adult sailing students with a caveat to disregard the high tech equipment and boat.

While this is all great information, I know that it's not truly a North Sails video. All Old School disciples of North Sails' teaching courses know this yacht isn't legit... It isn't named "Lumpy Gravy".

I know we all have our bias, etc, but despite the face the SF3300 is not a yacht, is that the basis for stating it is not legit?
