The Khoikhoi: South Africa's First People & The World's Oldest Tribe | Early Humans Documentary

In this post-colonial world of towering skyscrapers and sprawling cities, the early human lifestyle has receded to the point of scarcity. Tribes continuing to live as hunter-gatherers have been forced out of their homes and mistreated by governments, both old and new, and, as a result, it is easy for the modern residents of certain countries to entirely forget the indigenous histories of the regions in which they live. A prime example of this is the first nations peoples of South Africa - the Khoikhoi, or Khoisan. These people are the oldest tribe still in existence today, and their story is a remarkable - and often untold - one.
Today on Early Humans, we will be bringing you something a little different - a look into the lives of modern peoples who live in the same manner our ancestors did, thousands of years ago. We will be exploring the history and modern presence of the Khoikhoi people in South Africa, examining their ways of life, beliefs, origins and key figures involved in their history. We hope you enjoy this episode on the Khoikhoi. It's incredible to think how many tribes have disappeared and left no evidence behind as to their existence. This is a very very controversial topic in South Africa and Zimbabwe , as the Khoisan people are mistreated and evicted from their lands just as Aboriginal Australians and Native American peoples are. They are a minority and under-represented in government and the majority of South Africans and Zimbabweans are descendants from Zulu tribes that migrated from Central Africa around 1200 years ago. It is controversial, because this history does not give the Governments made up of mostly Zulus the right to evict the Khoisan people and, even worse : " It makes them invading Johnny come latelys just like the Dutch settlers of Cape Town" . They don't get a birthright to reclaim white owned lands, because the lands belonged to the Khoisan , and not the Zulus.
