1:11:17 Back in case 2, Cammy Meele was involved in smuggling the Alif Red Statue, a famous, rich sculpture worth “10 million cents,” according to Zinc Lablanc. She gave Lablanc a forged version of the statue, presumably to take the real one someplace. 1:25:10 Edgeworth is 26 in this game (I think? I recall Phoenix is 26 in Trials and Tribulations, this game takes place a month after that game, and Edgeworth is a few months younger than Phoenix) Also, It’d be really cool if you used the pixel art and OG soundtrack just for case 4, then swapped back to the HD and arranged soundtrack for the case after. With the theme of case 4, it’d fit pretty well.

Something you may have now noticed is that the three items that Buddy bought to Jacques back in Turnabout Visitor were about a case that had happened the prior day, which was this case. Those items being a gun, the full Pegasus pendant and a videotape with “KG-8 Incident” written on it. On my first playthrough I immediately noticed the pendant was suspiciously similar even if it was missing its wings at first, and well there was a good reason for that. Anyway I’m looking forward to the next case as it’s not only what I think is the best case in the game, but honestly one of my favorites in the series.

Chronologically, it's case 2->3->1. Here, buddy and portsman are alive and lang's talking about a smuggler agent inside the prosecution, who turned out to be portsman. Lang's not wrong about his accusations against the prosecutors and it does really explain so much of why he was acting the way he was towards edgeworth - he just could've gone about it WAAAAY better.

Lance would have had to reveal the fake kidnapping plot if he initially claimed that he killed Deacon in self-defense. By the time the fake kidnapping plot is revealed I am less sure why he would hide it, but it might have something to do with his dad not wanting the truth of Deacon to come out (which could have been the case if they researched why Deacon would have tried to kill Lance in the first place).

Time to talk about how good of a villain Ernest is, when you get down to it, Ernest is the real villain of this case, as everything surrounding Lance's plot was related to Ernest and his shady dealings. Also his design has a great bit of subtlety, he looks a lot like a traditional statue of Buddha, fitting his initial portrayal as a generous benefactor to Miles, but his design also includes as dark moustache (a staple of villain designs) and just enough hair on either side to flick out and create the impression of devil horns, showing that his generosity is all a front. Even his fondness for Manfred Von Karma is a hint at his true nature. And of course the obvious joke of his name literally meaning "honest man" despite him being the poster boy for bribery. Not related to Ernest, but just a moment's appreciation for how good Lang's theme is.

Yeah, Case 3 is a really interesting one in this game, a really crafty culprit and someone who was VERY determined to get them out of it. Plus the introduction of Kay Faraday, a big debut and continues the whole interconnected thing. This game has an interesting structure at the very least, starting with one of the chronologically later events then going back to Edgeworth's arrival in the country and the following case with Ernest. Makes what cases 4 and 5 are in terms of chronological placement interesting. Point is, interesting structure, just kinda difficult to follow given it's supposed to be one of the more interconnected games in the franchise. All that said, Case 4 is certainly exciting, that's gonna be a whole thing, and I imagine you aren't gonna be short on hilarious reactions to just how THAT goes.

Oh hey, you got your first game over! Cool thing about the Investigations duology is that, depending on where you game over, there’s unique dialogue. If you mess up and game over at the very start of this case (possible by repeatedly using wrong logic), for instance, Edgeworth will simply give up, resign to his fate, and wait for Lang to save him. It’s a great level of attention to detail!

Fun Fact: When starting this case, you can see the shattered remains of the mirror wall when Edgeworth was guarding the haunted house that wasn't there when Edgeworth was entering the dining room to make the drop off. We were too busy with the attacking badger to notice. This detail was even in the DS version. That's a nice touch. Though, the DS version did miss a detail that this version corrects. The prop sword vanished when Edgeworth was guarding the haunted house when it was clearly in its spot when Edgeworth was entering the dining room. This version, at least, left the sword right where it should be when Edgeworth was guarding the haunted house.

Fun fact, in japanese, Little Thief's name is Nusumi-chan (literally "theft" plus the "-chan" honorific). I guess they kinda just left this detail out of the localization, but the reason Edgeworth is acting kind of awkward and hesitating before saying its name in this part of the game in particular is because in Japanese, he's having some trouble with the concept of using the casual "-chan" honorific for the device, doing his best to dodge actually using it, and ultimately opting to use the more formal "-san" instead.

Edgeworth has to solve a murder he's initially accused of at 30,000 feet, while timezones are hazy enough for people to not all be on the same page about what time it is, so you know he's already eating jet lag at that point (and he also passed out from a panic attack too). Then he wraps it up only to get called by an old benefactor to get roped into a hostage deal that goes wrong, and Edgeworth actually gets knocked out in the process. After resolving this, he goes back to his office late at night only to trigger a THIRD murder mystery where he is briefly the accused party again, with it all resolving around 5 AM. This man dealt with 3 murder cases while being awake for at least 30 straight hours, not counting the times he was forcibly rendered unconscious! As bad of days as Phoenix has had up to this point, I don't think he can match Edgeworth's sheer volume of Very Bad Day here.

I commented this in the poll but I wanted to avoid spoiler territory so I left this tidbit out; since the next case is a case about "reminiscence" as the title suggests, it would make perfect sense to turn back the soundtrack for that one. When Shih-na was explaining the Lang's loss of power, and how it was "all because of the courts..." I almost expected her to complain that the courts ruled that it was too much of a conflict of interest to have all law enforcement heads be relatives. But apparently in Ace Attorney land it's perfectly normal :D

It gives “small town” vibes (but applied to a whole country). Interestingly, in Japan it was traditional for family to stick to a specific profession from generation to generation; so, it makes sense in paper for a small Asian country to have a single family be dedicated as the head of law enforcement (although they stopped being it 10 years before this case)

The backgrounds look weird in pixel because they weren't actually drawn to be tiny, they were drawn big and then resized to fit on the DS's screen. You can tell because theres some weird white pixels around the lines that make the background look even more "blurry" than it already is. But the characters were draen with the intent of being small, so they look better. I just wish they had used the original sprites and not the weird mobile ones.

What bothers me the most about the pixel art style is that they cut the sprites' outer edges in a weird way that makes the pixel size inconsistent, seemingly all for the sake of making the outlines look smoother than the resolution they were originally drawn in. Which kinda goes against the whole point of picking the pixel art style.

Glad to see that you enjoyed this case! (It's so fun!) Also, remember how previously, there was no blood at the stadium despite it being the supposed crime scene? Edgeworth concluded that it must be because it had been absorbed by the victim's costume (but surely a little bit would have seeped out of the bullet hole in the costume). Well, turns out the actual reason for there being no blood is because it wasn't the real crime scene either - there probably is some blood to be found in the haunted house, though (which we of course didn't see in the recreation).

I mean, it is a little messy with the pacing of the story (partially because it has a very interesting background that is barely the focus of the case (I am talking about the kind of background that would make sense to elaborate on during the actual case rather than the epilogue of it, (such as part of the nature of Colin Devorae's arrest)).

One thing I never got is why they use the excuse of the gunshot being hidden by the haunted house sounds when you could easily try the excuse of the costume muffling the gunshot. If Oliver was shot at point blank range like the burn marks indicate, that is a very real possibility depending on how thick the costume is so?? Weird writing moment. Also I love Lang's eyebrows growing into his hairline I think it's very sexy.

Now that you finished the case, i want to tell you my theory on the case when i was halfway through playing it. When i saw the letters from Viola Cadaverini that where given to Lance Amano, i was expecting Viola to show up in the case but i also thought she would be the culprit. I thought that there was gonna be a love triangle between Lance, Viola and Lauren and Viola would try to kill Lauren just so she could have Lance but killed Colin/Oliver by mistake who mabye went in Laurens place to save his own daughter. I also thought she would be the third kidnapper along with Lauren and Colin and i never expected Lance to be the mastermind behind his own kidnapping or the culprit. This case to me is one of the most unexpecting.

@mikayla Having the pixel art style for some part of the 1st or 2nd video of the next case would be optimal as you'll be able to see all the new graphics/animations at least once as they get repeated after that (and thus nothing would be missed). It would just be bit of *retro* fun for a *"retro" case* to switch it up :P 😛 (Though as someone previously mentioned, these graphics do seem to be different from the original higher quality pixelart graphics from the Nintendo DS release. But it might still be fun a while and I just feel, why knock it before we even try it?) I can definitely understand not finding much that's likable about Lang in this case. I would say his role in this case is more akin to Edgeworth from the second case of the first game or what Franziska primarily was during Justice For All, sort of a pure relentless opposing force potentially easy to hate on, which sort of lines up with how characters like Ema and Oldbag treated him at the end of that part they were in. However, of course, the lack of separate trial days combined with Lang's real goal being Ernest means there's less satisfaction in 'beating' him, as well as not having much prior context (what w/ Zheng Fa not being a place mentioned before) to speculate on or as much initial mystique/coolness like Godot presented.

I take issue with the fact that the OFFICIAL BLUEPRINTS they used for the recreation were incorrect. Why?? That defeats the purpose of having the blueprints portray the construction of the building. If the little room where the doll was placed was a later addition, that could explain it, but that's both (A) completely unmentioned and (B) unsatisfying.

Honestly, with lance's self-defense claim, I can't blame him for hiding it. We've seen how the legal system in ace attorney works. The judge favours the prosecutors, the prosecutors are an extension of the police and you get ones like the von karmas who blatantly withhold and fabricate evidence to stack the case and bully the entire court to march to their tune because they care only about winning - not fair trials. "The prosecutor must win" "the defendant must be guilty" "we will resort to cheating to get that guilty verdict" "and the judge lets us get away with it". And since murder charge = death penalty, yeah. Of course lance is going to hide it. The instant he steps foot in court, he's screwed.

Murder charge does not equal death penalty in Ace Attorney, the characters that got a death penalty were either behind more extreme cases of crime or they committed multiple murders. There is no way Lance would have gotten the death penalty even if he did not kill Deacon in self-defense. Self-defense does not have jail time as far as I am aware in Ace Attorney, but it would ruin his reputation (he would still face charges for the fake kidnapping plot, and framing Lauren Paups of course).

So yes, it would be death penalty unless lance could successfully prove self-defense. But with the way the prosecutors in ace attorney actively withhold evidence and use their favoritism to shut down defense attorneys, good luck with that
