My dad made 32 dollars an hour and work from 6:00am until 8:30 or so and he still was struggling to eat and pay bills. It’s because at that tax bracket they deduct more from you there if your making 16 dollars an hour. He did landscaping and worked hard and I work with him for less then a month and all I did was work and come home at 8:30 pm drink for a couple hours then pass out and do it again and I worked of Saturdays and was suppose to work Sundays but I said no way. My girlfriend at the time almost left me because we never seen each other and I was unhappy what little time I was home. Then I worked at furniture restoration but just mainly sanding, stripping with chemical stripper, using steal wool to prep the wood and I split wood, made rock retaining walls, did the lugging and labour work, cut grass and helped with the restoration. I was sanding so much wood and after about a year I was sanding in the early spring and we got in old planks that where Mouldy and I sanded them all and I developed a viral infection from the mouldy wood dust that I was breathing in as well as all the other dust from sanding and from landscaping from cement mix. Both times I was never told not to inhale that shit until I started having respiratory problems. The second time with the wood dust left me with a bad viral infection that gets worse in the fall time. The first year carrying my wood from the bush I was not able to breath and was having to stop every couple of mins because I could not breath and was sweating so very much. I started coughing up green and yellow stuff and when I would just clear my lungs normally and spit it would be completely black in contrast to the white snow. That was about 14 years ago and my lungs are just starting to heal and I don’t get the infection as bad anymore. The doctors said there’s not much they can do about it because they can’t keep me on antibiotics constantly and it is a consistent viral infection that is present in the summer, spring gets worse in the fall and subsides in the winter. I also have smoked like a chimney both pot and cigarettes and would keep a loaded bong by me bed so when I woke up the first thing I did was reach down pick up the bong and take a hoot. And before I got the viral infection I had the worst morning cough anyone around me ever heard from the cement dust so the sanding did not bloody well help.

Picture it, Slave Lake, 1992 - we were out there putting up some buildings for a reserve. The young gun had had enough of the road and wanted to go home, we all knew it, we all wanted to go home too. We were putting down some TGIs when he screams from his side like he had just put a nail into the knuckle of his thumb. He had. He fell forward with the nailer in his hand, he said, and used that hand to stabilize himself. In the process, capow!, nailed himself to the top rail of the TGI. We grabbed a sawsall and.. cut him loose. He was white like a ghost on the ride to the hospital staring at this chunk of spruce attached to his thumb. Ah, the good old days, we shipped him back on a bus and fished from the roof of our job site for dinner like every other day.
