This is an OUTSTANDING review, especially the wonderful research you've handed us on the actors and other films.

Charles McGraw, one of the killers, makes a career out of playing tough cops or tougher villains. From this film (1946) onward, he bats about .750 or .800, and for a couple of years, he's batting 1.000 with, especially for the rest of the '40s and deep into the '50s. In short, if I find a film with "Charles McGraw" listed, it's about 3-outta-4 gonna be a favorite. And his role - often as a supporting character - will make significant contributions to charge the story forward. When he's in the lead, there's not much any rotten director or story can do to derail it. He's such a commanding presence. (Oh. An oddity - TV created a CASABLANCA series in the '50s, and McGraw was Rick Blaine. I've never seen an episode - I should look on KZbin for it!)

If you can wrangle up the Criterion DVD edition, you will also get the 1964 re-make with a cameo by Ronald Reagan (I believe it was his last role), and a plethora of extras, commentaries etc.

I've read iffy things about the remake. That's the one with Lee Marvin from 1964, right? As I do more of this channel I'm finding I don't like to cross that 1960 line vey often though... :D

Great movie. I have it on DVD. One thing though. Burt was 32 not 23 when the movie was made. He was born in 1913.

Lancaster was at his most beautiful in this film. As was Ava Gardner.
