A call went for volunteers to help out to collect as many Kina /sea urchins from the sea bed here in wellington. The aim is to see if collecting kina would have affect of stopping seaweed forest becoming kina barren
The call was was answered from divers and free divers from dive wellington and a Facebook group called wellington underwater group . I think we broke the record for the amount collected. Hope you enjoy the video and might of learnt something new.

Thats what happened they could take as much as they wanted. They was given a permit as there is a limited of 50 kina per person. Win win 👍

Last time I went back to NZ I visited diving spots that were plentiful when I was a kid in the 80s only to find the ocean floor covered in a desert of kina. Too many greedy and inconsiderate people taking more than is sustainable.

What I can remember when diving the limit is 20 . My understanding due to the kina they are causing devastation to seaweed and in some areas totally barren . I believe that’s one of the reasons of this dive event to collect kina just makes a small dent in the population . It’s like some areas in the US . Where they kill as many lion fish as possible . I wish there was another way .

I know at the time there where Māoris taking part . Don’t think it was a government scheme as such . It was to protect the sea weed and other marine life habitat. None of the kina went to waste. I just volunteered to help out and found it very rewarding as kina can devastate a large areas of the sea bed . I hope that answer you question.

If you mean the kina ? I was told that it was eating everything but mostly seaweed making it very barren for other marine life .The kina was handy out to the divers to eat .

Without the kina the weed these things eat will multiply an strangle the reefs

You’ve got it round the wrong way. Kina strip reefs when their main predators - generally snapper or other fish - are not plentiful enough to keep them under control. Reefs and kelp forests and seaweed beds are breeding grounds and shelter for a large percentage of sea life. Without weed and seaweeds and reefs the Moana suffers.
