I think you can use The Message… selectively. It is essentially a bridge between a translation and a commentary. I think it’s useful, but it needs to be utilized the same way you might quote a Biblical commentary that makes explicit an element of the text that the proclaimation of scripture entails. However, it limits the ability of scripture to speak for itself, because it is not attempting to be a pure translation, so I think it is best used in the “getting into the weeds” part of the message.

I heard Eugene Peterson say that it is a paraphrase of the bible and shouldn't be used in replace of other translations and definitely not use in preaching in the pulpit. Maybe there needs to be a warning label at the beginning of that bible. 😉

I’ve been saved and in church for 25 years now. I’ve seen and experienced this type of preaching. Out of my ignorance when I was younger didn’t know any better and agreed and shouted to messages like this. As I’ve grown over the years I grew up and began to listen intently of what’s being said. Also come to know that’s not how things change in my life. My second church taught me discipline and taught me to work on ME! Within…I am the one is putting me in a bind. A financial situation doesn’t change until you do and follow God’s word. The shouting and huckabucking don’t do it… it’s applying God’s word!!! Took me a long time to get it even though I was studying the word, fasting and praying… You have to live out the scriptures, be obedient to God. We need to teach this MORE in our churches. I’ve seen God move in my life, however, I couldn’t no longer listen to preaching like this. This type of preaching really makes me mad because these people are going to be LOST! Did that “financial blessing” come. You go back week after week hearing the same thing. This is sad on so many levels. 😢

Yes, it's easy to be led astray if you follow blindly, but any real Christian who reads their bible consistently should know what they're being taught in churches like this heretical and wrong. It's on them to discern, leave and find a good church. The problem is mthat FAR too many people these days never ever open their bibles. They believe what they're being told because it's easier than putting in the word. Thinking with your heart and not your brain (we're told to do the opposite in scripture) is so much easier.

@@MarkMay-cr6bv It is very true that it is their Fault in allowing themselves, by sheer laziness (as the Bible and its many Supporting Documents is available in Audiobook form (the Legendary Alexander Scourby Reading of the King James Version still being Widely Distributed even after all these Years, just as an Example!) , genuine illiteracy, which is a Tragedy and something that Requires Sympathy can still be Countered) to be Blind to Scripture, Confession and Catechism, as well as to the Writings of the Early Church Founders (many of the Heresies in the Charismatic Movement being utterly Condemned as long ago as the Second Century AD by Irenaeus of Lyon and Hippolytus of Rome after all!) it is in many ways their own fault in that they have been led Astray by these Ravenous Wolves, as People like Murphy are indeed Described as by Scripture. Indeed, I myself learned to Discern and left my old Church (church (cult) of England) due to Rampant Heresies, Sadly, I am yet to find a Replacement as the Few Reformed, Actually Bible Believing Churches in the UK that will actually take Disabled Members are all out of Range (Nearest is 105 Miles!) sadly, so they also, indeed, need to learn to Discern Leave, and get themselves under Godly, True, Pastors such as, for Examples in the US, John MacArthur, Steven Lawson, Justin Peters, Voddie Baucham, Todd Friel, Matthew Everhard, etc. Indeed, Biblical Illiteracy is absolutely Endemic these Days, and People, due to closed Bibles (or even not owning a Bible) are indeed Believing any Rubbish they are Fed by someone who knows how to work their Emotions (one of the Reasons I am leaning in Favour of the Strict (Puritan) Regulative Principle of Worship is because it Forbids Emotionalism, meaning there is no Risk of me being led astray, as I once was, by my Silly, Foolish, and often Childish, Emotions) as they do not know what the Bible Says.... something that can be Easily Sorted by Reading it! or Listening to an Audiobook Version! I may not be able to use my Brain very well, Autism, General Developmental Delay, Reduced Mental and Emotional Age, and limited Maturity, but Use it I do, and If I am able to use my Brain, which, again, does not work Properly! to understand Scripture, Confession, and Catechism, then the People in these "Goat Farms", as Pastor Peters calls them, are without Excuse! Love and Peace.

I’ve been to very many types of Churches, LDS , SDA, Catholic, Baptist, but I never have been to a church that a least two or three people didn’t have a Bible and actually checked what is being said even when I was going to church in Tijuana I didn’t have confidence in the priest and confession was out the door, but if was going to this church 1. I’d talk to the preacher one on one and if they blow me off , of course next the elders if they have one (some) and from there I’m out but not before I let others know which scripture,and try to open some eyes and save some souls, bless you my brothers and sisters. A lot of them are sexually repressed, especially if they started being groomed at a young age to carry the “preacher” image all while not being properly taught about interpersonal relationships. They are only taught how to church. It eventually comes out in them in some perverted way. My Church is using the story of Nehemiah to teach and speak to their expansion plans. I’ll be honest they are pushing for money. Though they want to open a new Church in areas without and to expand their current location to help children with special needs and their parents. I see how the story of Nehemiah is used a lot when looking for money. What I can say is my Church is using the story as well to speak of what can be accomplished when focusing on pray and trusting in the Lords plan.

So my pastor was teaching the other week that Nehemiah prayed and fasted and God worked through him to open the door that would allow him to rebuild the temple, like giving him the boldness to speak to the king. That was the spiritual aspect. The physical is how Nehemiah faced a lot of opposition and trial but didn’t give up and continued to push forward despite that. Hence the physical. So basically the message was that you need the spiritual and the physical to accomplish what God wants you to accomplish in your life or your calling. What I was asking is if you think that is a good way for the story of Nehemiah to be used?
