Huge respect for DeNiro to be so enthusiastic and insistent about doing this role, and fairly early in his career.

@Ughra Yuvakov It definitely says a lot about culture, madness and the vapid, hollow, pitiful, cult of celebrity. In that sense things have (unbelievably) only gotten worse. (See: 2022 Academy Awards) I’m genuinely sad for kids today. They don’t have a clue about how bad they’ve got it. They complain like they do but they have no idea… This film was decades ahead of ‘Joker’ and it tells the story far more eloquently! Edit: Your comments were spot on!

I saw this movie after I seen Joker and was amazed. King of comedy is a great movie, so is Joker but you can definitely see the inspirations used to fuel that film. I’ve heard Taxi Driver comparisons which I can totally see but after watching the King of Comedy it seemed much more of an inspiration instead of Taxi Driver (in my opinion) The dark lonely feeling definitely was Taxi Driver esque

Exact sentiment. A timeless movie that I never get tired of. Everyone involved was genius in this, especially Jerry Lewis. Scorcese definitely took a gamble with this edgy movie at the time and shot it out of the park.

@richardwagon6433
@richardwagon6433 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting that Robert de Niro agreed to be in that rip off as you call it. I'd say it was hugely inspired by the King of Comedy. Anyway, Joker got so much backlash from the sensitive crowds that are trying to control media these days. They were paranoid that a copy cat would try to emulate Joker and commit acts of violence. If they tried to make this movie today, those same people would call for it to be cancelled because the protagonist psychotically kidnapped someone and held him hostage. Protagonists these days have to be squeaky clean role models that are representative of today's laundry list of demographics that are pandered to by corporations and Hollywood.

Superb commentary on a great film. Kudos ! 👏 It's all here : the para relationship with celebrities - always love/hate. What do you want from them ? How Rupert desires to get back at all the people in high school who put him down, doubted him. Telling. I even admired Sandra's courage in criticizing modern Times Square - as all old school NYCers do - it ain't the same city anymore. No it's not. 😢

this was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see after watching the movie... interestingly, I just read in IMDB's trivia section "Jerry Lewis suggested that his character be killed by Rupert at the end of the film, but Martin Scorsese rejected his idea." Being at the climax of the film, I wonder if Joker would've still murdered Deniro had Deniro murdered Jerry Lewis or whether Joker would've been forced to do something else for fear of similarity

I watch this movie over and over on HBO when I was 12 years old back in 1984. Back then if a movie came out, typically it would be released on HBO about a year later after its original release date. Even at 12 years old, this movie made me feel uncomfortable. I understood what it was about…. I felt embarrassed for Rupert, as I do think everyone who watched the movie because his fantasy were fantasy’s we held at the age of 8 or 10 years old about Hollywood and Fame.

Things Sandra Bernhard claims: * Scorsese was sexually attracted to her crazy personality * Other directors didn't hire her because they were intimidated by her acting prowess * She alone is responsible for her future roles she forced to happen when the entire industry had it out for her Mmmmmmmkay. Clearly she was born to play the role of Masha.

I broke down and watched this movie, after purposely avoiding it for decades, for the lone reason that anything with DeNiro could not possibly be terrible. It took me probably 15 minutes to begin to get into it but I ended up just loving it. Naturally DeNiro was fabulous as the passive-aggressive lunatic but Bernhard was the ideal 3rd character. An equally pathetic wannabe with boundless energy. Bottom line, a great film in my opinion, with Jerry Lewis playing the "straight man".
