So after watching fullmetal alchemist, i thought to myself: "Damn, Alphonse was really lucky that Edward just so happens to have a full suit of armor lying around to transmute him into when the human transmutation failed" Honestly if the whole thing happened to me, in my house, with my brother, i'd panic and probably transmute my brother's soul into an electric fan or something since it's the best i got lying around in my room.

For an anime made more than 13 years ago, the fights are still beautiful. No repeat frame and talk no jutsu in the middle of a heated hand to hand combat. You just know once two parties kick off someone is going to die and that’s the weight of a fight a lot of animes can’t replicate

@@frog6054 hard disagree, I think quality has gone up over time but there is also way more anime being made every year nowadays so there's ton of trash being made which unlike the stuff 30 years ago or 13 years ago hasn't had enough time yet to fade out of the collective memory of anime watchers, no one remembers all the garbage anime they produced in the 80s and 90s but we do remember the trash produced this year or 2 years ago for example. So it makes it seem like there's some decline in quality, it's the same with music and most art forms really in my opinion.

The most powerful technique a writer can ever learn (some never do) is how to finish their story. For a shounen series, FMA Brotherhood is extremely short, but it closes every loop and punctuates every narrative arc in a way that leaves the reader/watcher immensely satisfied. Despite years of searching, I've yet to find any piece of literature with such immense scope condensed into such a tightly constructed narrative. It's the only manga/anime I've ever read where I've felt like I experienced so much more than just a story, it's like I experienced the World.

ermmm....FMA is a monthly manga which has the longer chapter lengh compare to weekly (38 page per chap compare to weekly is around 18-21) so all in all it has 109 chapter but it is equal to a 200+ chapters shounen weekly. Therefore it is not "Extremely" short it is about a okay leght. And yes i do agree with all other points.

I have had genuine trouble imagining what a person of just about any ethnicity would look like drawn in the style of just about any anime, but FMA does it perfectly. It’s one of the few series that actually makes ethnicities look distinct and distinguishable in the same way they are in the real world. And it goes back into the whole recognizing them even with different hair thing. They actually know how to draw facial traits and do so really well, including those predominant in people of various different ethnicities.

The narration of the story, the flow of introducing the characters, telling their back stories without disrupting the other side stories as well as the balance of drama, comedy action and romance in it. I love how the author tried give every character a chance to tell their stories and be understood/ loved by the viewers. @jonathanoriley8260
@jonathanoriley8260 9 ай бұрын
@@botanical_chloride_6471 2003's plot is completely different from Brotherhood's after the very beginning, and as such the Homonculi serve a different role (this is because the manga had not finished at that point, and so the 2003 anime had to kinda... go off the rails and create its own divergent story). They have "better" characterizations because they are essentially completely different characters. In the manga (and as such Brotherhood which follows the manga faithfully), the Homonculi are basically manifestations of the Seven Deadly Sins created from the "soul" of the Dwarf in a Flask (Father), and so they act and behave as such. In the 2003 anime, they are not these things - in fact, certain Homonculi in 2003 either physically are not the same at all or are swapped between each other. And for the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won't say more than that. While Brotherhood's depiction of the Homonculi are less "Humanized", that was kind of the whole point; they aren't Human, and they are not as morally or psychologically complex as Humans. The Homonculus who was inherently the most Humanized and complex was Greed, which makes sense when you understand how much more intertwined that trait is with Human Nature more so than the others (Greed is the only one that could understand true love and companionship on a deep level - the others could not, which is why he was also the only rebellious one). Personally, I much prefer Brotherhood's depiction and characterization of them. But as you said, you'll have to form your own opinion.

the thing about FMA: Brotherhood is there are many themes/concepts that people can take something different out of the story/show. It's not just one thing and the way it is executed is just perfect. For example, the way i saw the ending (i won't spoil exactly what happens) is Ed finally comes to the conclusion that "Yeah, I'm human... but there is nothing wrong with that and my brother is more important." which is already so touching but then it's there is just so much more to take away other than that and it just is perfection all around.

At the end of last year, the author began publishing a new manga, Yomi no Tsugai. I feel it has potential not to rival FMA, but to at least provide a similar feeling to it. Only 5 chapters so far and It's quite good, albeit somewhat confusing as they just throw a lot of stuff and slowly provide the explanation to it. Looks promising, and I totally recommend reading it.
@WoobertAIO

@jetskiiify
@jetskiiify 2 жыл бұрын
@@WoobertAIO I mean, yes and no. Fma gives you a couple of stuff you don't know and starts giving some hints to stuff that will happen. It explains what alchemy is, how it works, etc. Yomi's first chapter is like a swarm of new things one next to the other, not really giving you a chance to understand what is going on. Felt so confused the first chapter and had to asume a lot of stuff before the following chapters finally gave me an idea of what was going on. It is similar to FMA because it gives you the idea that there's a lot of stuff happening underneath the covers. A lot of secrecy. It's way less subtle than fma, instead of unraveling the mystery here is more like. I wonder who (totally this person) is lying? Again, it's good. So far it's slowly unraveling the world, and the chapters are longer and much more slow than fmas. It has the same feeling to fma, mysterious+wholesome, and while it's a different approach so far I think it's going to be a great manga.

Fullmetal Alchemist just hits the perfect sweet spot of having a simple story with wide appeal, but also one that can be enjoyed on a deeper level. It's like the "Lord of the Rings" of anime, a series that can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone. It doesn't have the typical shonen issues like powerscaling, neverending fights, or having things be dragged out. A rare example of a series that stayed solid throughout and ended on the author's terms.

Evidently, you like Lord of the Rings a lot, but it has not reached the same status, nor does it have the same key ingredients. For readers like you, it's one of the best fantasy series, but it has one obvious flaw: the magic system is soft. It's vague, unrefined, there are no governing laws we can study and magic we can invent, as a result, there may always be an ass-pull "Deus ex machine" solution to a corner the writer wrote themselves into. Alchemist and Avatar TLA, they both have strong magic systems grounded in our science, and so their struggles to overcome certain challenges become much more believable. They have walls both you and the fictional characters can "see". People who agree with you will appreciate your comment, but you need to find a better example to have a wider appeal.

GOD the writting of this show is excellent! There aren't as many fights as someone whould expect from a shonen but every single one is done to perfection, they fight so flashy and technicaly and yet the anime never focuses on that because every fight scene shows that they are fighting for their goals, beliefs and ethic. I dunno if that's how it went exactly, but that feeling of exploration, like the world was actually alive, really stuck with me. Yo, great video! FMA is the bar I measure all other shows by. just wanted to drop a comment on the music in the show... Trisha's lullaby is the single most heartbreaking and moving piece of music I think I've ever heard. And as for episode 4.... That may have emotionally scarred me for life and also made me NEED to watch this entire series to the end. Once again, great video player

The thing I love most about FMA is that it makes good use of literally every single characters. Super minor characters, like Yoki, have their roles, and even nameless extra Briggs soldiers had roles to play in the finale. Every character in the series was all memorable. But my number 1 thing I love about FMA is that it doesn't try to bs their way out of awful shit that "good" characters do in the show. It acknowledges that shit like mass murder is objectively fked up shit and doesn't try to use bs plot to justify and forgive characters like Mustang, Hawkeye and other military characters. Instead, they properly address the part they had in it and actually show their repentance. Not a lot of animes do this.

The thing I noticed after having watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and the reason why I think it has ranked so highly for so long, is that it is balanced. It arguably does not excel in any one regard, like many other top anime, but instead it is refined enough in almost all aspects that it rarely feels lacking except for maybe the ending, which is outweighed by the journey. The story is expansive with a way of storytelling that is more faction-driven or location-driven rather than character-driven, which you see more in Western storytelling; another reason why I think it's been consistently a great starter anime. I would rank it above many of my Top 20, and yet it isn't present there, which further indicates that is maybe watched and respected even if there is no personal lasting impact, like many of the highest-ranked pieces of media are. tl;dr Fullmetal Alchemist feels like a story in anime foundations, rather than a story in anime limitations.

@@novelle.27 I mean it in the sense that it pans between multiple groups throughout episodes, not caring about their status in the character hierarchy, but rather where they are or what they're doing. People are in different places at different times, learning different things at different times, through the course of the entire show. These parties don't stay the same, they frequently mix and split up so more focus is given to what their current situations are. Whereas, most other anime stick to either one or two "cameras" per se, only splitting up perspectives frequently for certain episodes, because a lot of anime are designed with the main character(s) as the *main* character(s).

It's been over 10 years since I first watched this anime and it has always stuck with me as #1, and I don't foresee that changing. Arakawa really knocked it out of the park, her ability to write worldbuilding, characters, and overall plot is amazing. 👏 There's a KZbinr who even talked about how she did so much of her own homework on alchemy to write the foundation of this story properly without pulling shit from out of nowhere. It's really interesting! I'm always grateful to have been graced by this anime even after all these years. 💛

I'll take the heresy a step further and say... I didn't actually like Brotherhood that much. The pacing was terrible, and not just in the beginning. I felt the series loses itself a few more times post- 2003 content as well. I distinctly remember the arc up north where they meet Armstrong's sister? That dragged on waaaaay too long and felt like it didn't go anywhere. It was way too long for what it did setup, at least. I also despised the "Chinese" characters: especially that little girl and her fucking panda. Those characters felt entirely tacked on. I didn't like all the extra gag humor either, as I felt it distracted from the series darker themes. The story was much more focused on the brothers and their Sin, as well. This feels like it's treated more as a prologue for Brotherhood and pushed aside for military coups and grand rituals with SPOILERS. 2003 explored the taboo and trauma at the heart of the brother's quest far more personally, and in my opinion, emotionally. I preferred the bittersweet ending as well. Maybe I need to rewatch it, but I always felt Brotherhood was overrated due to that pretentious noise of "THE MANGA IS ALWAYS BETTER, and thus, any deviation from the manga is trash!" You know how many arguments I've gotten with FMA:B fans that always circle back to that in the end? If it even gets further than "BUT MANGA!" in the first place? *sigh* Still, I always loved the 2003 FMA and never cared for the FMA:B one. I kept watching because of hype and waiting for it to get good, but I just didn't enjoy it half as much. I might pick up more on my second viewing after all these years... but fuck that little girl, her fucking panda, and "CHINESE ALCHEMY IS JUST BETTER" bullshit.

@@duncanlutz3698 Okay, that's a constructive answer, I like that, I feel like we're going to have a good discussion about that. That's your opinion and i entirely respect it. First of all, i'm french (yes yes baguette), and i'd like to apologize for my poor english (i'm doing my best). As I said it, i'm in love with the FMA franchise, the 2003 anime was my first encounter with the japanese animanga culture. I've watched both of the anime (FMA(:B)) and i'm reading the manga (idk why it took me so much time to do it, but better too late than never i guess). And i'm doing my best to put aside my eternal love for the 2003 anime to be objective (the following part won't thus) I don't why but, in my opinion both of the anime, apart from following the manga or not, are not in the same category : 2003 anime is much more apparented to a seinen (darker, redemption stuffs, sins, homonculus etc are much more present) , and 2009 is pretty much a shonen/seinen (?) I don't really know why I think that, i'm pretty sure that the end of 2003 anime make me think that, I felt the desper, i've cried at the end (that's the first time i've cried while reading/watching a book/movie, i'm not usually the type of guy that cry for shitty reasons). Maybe those anime are not for the same public after all. For instance, my top mangas (and i said mangas not anime) are Bleach = Berserk < Soul Eater < Dororo = Hell's Paradise, so i'm pretty much enjoying Seinen and Shonen. And I've enjoyed both of the FMA anime. Maybe you're the type of guy reading Seinen more than Shonen ? I don't know you should give me you're pref manga/anime. You can clearly see a pattern in my preferences, Berserk is the Seinen lord (in my opinion), dororo is hella dark too, Hell's Paradise also, Bleach, Soul Eater are shonen, but the drawing are always giving me black type energy if you know what i mean, the kind of drawing where i'm "oh god give me your thoughest challenges and let me overcome them or die trying". That might be the reason I prefer the 2003 anime over FMA:B Now, I pretty much agree with what you said, i like dark stuffs in manga, i prefer FMA 2003. But i've still enjoyed FMA:B. In both of the anime, the brother's have one goal, get their bodies back, the amount of things they have to do is different, like, in 2003 anime, there's not a lot of stuff happening in the same time but even trying there's no way they can get their bodies back --> desper, and in FMA:B, there's so much more things happening, the xin throne succession, the government, the homonculus, and Father all intertwined etc, it always gave me the impression that the plot is more developped. It's an unbelievable amount of stress and determination they need to overcome this (we get back to the Seinen/shonen differences in the anime), and that's why peoples watch shonen! The manga isn't meant to be as dark as the 2003 anime as you may think, but that's the author choice, and we are lucky to have an anime that is inspirated from the manga but is more dark and focused on the brother's as you said it! Edit: I should watch both again, i recently watched again FMA:B but i haven't watched 2003 anime in a while
