I've seen a lots of animator old personal project before they even working in the studio, each of them is a monster in their own tier and fully capable of making masterpiece on their own, super talented people, i believe with most case of bad animations is budget, management and crunch issues. Then reality hit a wall and somebody have thrown a million and tought that it would suffice to make a great animated series... damn. So many people in movie industry think that making animated movies is far easier to do than normal movies and in some aspects they are right.. but mostly not. When each frame needs to be drawn and put together and redrawn and put together again it might be a tremendous task. Especially for action oriented animations like this in which each detail is important and so is the pace of each episode. To nail it in every frame and second of this series its damn hard where action is center piece.

You probably had a better experience than manga readers then, I'd imagine. Manga readers had lofty expectations after already experiencing the story once. It was already visually impressive in terms of detail and art style, so they anticipated absolutely mind-blowing, fluid fight chorography. That's really the only value an animated version of the manga could add. The problem I find is that in order to create that value, the animators would have to have taken several liberties when it came to how fights progressed... the anime paralleled the action in the manga to a T. it was a slideshow of the manga, effective -- but to me, that suggests that the manga's action just wasn't as cool as they imagined it to be. despite how many manga reader felt while reading, the manga's chorography was not all that great. heavily bolstered by reader's imagination. had a lot of cheap flurry attacks to communicate going 'all out', a lot of attacks that are named solely for hype and not because they do anything special/unusual, etc.

I found it a disillusion also. I only discovered the manga a few months before there was talk of making an anime out of it, but while the manga managed to captivate me - which was surprising, since it had little to no worldbuilding, plot, story, and even characterization - the fights were just...awesome, on a unapologetic level. You know what treatment (and style) I think it should have had? Jojo's bizarre adventure. It had all the earmarks of that. Instead, we had some meager watered-down dull simulation of something that had a very vague resemblance to the manga. For something that has to have everything from its fights, it had awful fights. Which made the entire anime awful. Animations were bad, pacing was bad, the structure and representation was a mess, and the fights were crappy... nothing felt epic. Stopped watching it midway.

Im pretty sure the series got popular when certain youtuber made those (now deleted) versus videos and those videos got like over 6 milllion wiews. @weirdokate8840 Жыл бұрын
thanks for talking about this manga, picked it up immediately after you spoke about the premise, finished the video after i got to the jack the ripper vs heracles fight. The art is bomb, i live for this set up - just a simple, straight forward "Fight or Die without even trying". And its very true that this kind of pacing feels better when you read as opposed to watch. The backstories give a certain break to the intensity of the panels - it kind of puts the brakes on since its easy to just start flying over fight panels if they go on for too long.

Older anime's seem to have more of a consistent quality in their animation throughout the entire show. Compared to anime these days, a lot of anime just rely on key moments to where the animation quality jumps 10x in quality and effort and then goes back to being pretty mediocre. Not saying it's trash, just saying there seems to be less effort in the entirety of the show these days and they focus on having more effort in more important moments instead of having the same amount of quality throughout the entire show.

I don't know how much Netflix actually fronted for this anime, but your Tom and Jerry comparison got me searching to see how much one of those shorts cost to produce, which was apparently about $50k for each short. I couldn't find the exact year this sum was attributed, so I split the early years period and calculated from 1950. That's uh, ~$620k for a 7 and a half minute short, with a production time of about 6 weeks. Now, I could be crazy, but I'm pretty sure the budget for each episode of an anime is well below that figure, for an episode 3 times the length, and put out in half the time. Frankly, I'm not even remotely surprised at how bad it looks if anything I searched up real quick is remotely believable.
