This video contains spoilers for The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.
I delve into the tragic backstory of Haliax of the Chandrian as I try to determine his motivations.

@@matthisk4658 Lanre was supposed to be good aswell, and from the perspective of Denna's song, Lanre was the good guy all along, all we know is that Kvothe heard a version where Selitos was the here. Honestly, is just as you say, the only thing i like about the theory is the interpretation of the cthaeh "seeing" everything and Selitos gaining "sight" in the story.

As far as referencing systems in the books go with each story pointing to another and connecting them wildly, I wanna say that the story of Sir Savien and Aloine mirrors Lanres and Lyras story very much. After performaning the song, Kvothe says something like "A story of a love found and lost and found and lost again". Sounds very much like Lanre and Lyra to me. Of course the references go further and further, as always: Aloine`s part is sung by Denna without Kvothes knowledge at first and him thinking she wouldn`t recognize him either "like ships passing each other by unknowingly", as far as I remember. This kind of depersonalizing of the characters is playing into one story becoming another by also masking specifics, You know what I mean? Aaalso "Lyra" is the musical instrument that the mythological figure of the famous singer Orpheus plays (at least in german). Another story that asks, if love and music can conquer death. Orpheus tries to save Eurydice from the world of the dead, but in the endeavor he loses so much hope and becomes such a pessimist, that he can`t withstand the temptation of tunring around when leaving with his love, which is the only thing he is not supposed to, so she falls back into the land of the dead again. But because of the way his chracter has changed through all the hardship he is bound to lose her, not being the optimist he was in the beginning. Sounds familiar? It is funny to me that his "Lyra" symbolizes music. You remember that scene when Kvothe comes into the Eolian searching for Denna after he sang with her and Deoch talks about his lute being with Stanchion,.Kvothe *thinks* he`s talking about Denna (weird coincidence? guess not.) and gets weirdly upset about it. So, to conclude: Is the Lyra in the original story both: A woman and an allegory for music itself? Dennas voice when singing as Aloine is described much in the same way Lyra`s voice is when calling Lanre back from the dead. Voices and music that are, at least for a time, described as entities without a vessel. Then there is the part where Kvothe himself reacts to the song he just sang with Denna`s help: He gets lost in his grief about them, he identifies (as he tells the Maer) with Savien, he weeps for him. Indicating again, that his affects concerning Lanre and his compassion and love for Savien are both overwhelming emotions that are manipulating him to strong beleifs and actions. While the song is a song, and therefor Kvothe`s element and the story is mere prose, so to say, it`s clear which one he favors, although they may just be the same story in different wrappings. And now I leave it up to you guys to do the further unraveling ^^

I'm quite sure that Lanre and Thelu are actually the same person and thus.. so is Haliax. Thelu is portraid as a god/saint but actually when you look at it objectivly he comes across more like a powerfull and very zealous faith leader who leads with an iron fist (hamer) and he was clearly a namer (very much sounds like Lanre). Thelu is also said to have had a magic candle as one of his powerful items (Heliax is portrayed with a black candle on the pottery later in the story). It seems that Thelu died or somehow merged with the great enemy Encanis in some way. It was at this battle of Dros sentor that he became Helliax as he returned from death (Yet he did not bare the shadow yet) .Now evil (or misguided) and bend on destroying the world as Encanis was before him, he betrayed the 6 city's of the empire and destroyed all but one. It is Selitos that truely sees the truth of Haliax when he takes his own eyes out. But Selitos doesn't name Heliax, He only reveals his true form so that everybody can now see who he truely is. Revealing the shadow Lanre/Thelu picked up from Encanis somehow. It is likely that Encanis is actually somehow Iax. So that would explain why Haliax is now somehow a mix of Thelu/Lanre and Encanis/Iax. I don't think that 6 refused the offer of Thelu to join them. I think all refused but 6 agreed. Putting the chandrian under the same curse of immortality as Haliax. The one odd story is the one in the start at book one, where the chandrian and Thelu seem to be both contemporaries and enemies. With the Chandrian emprisoning Thelu in a round cell with no doors. But I think this story is just a strange false mix of other stories. With the round cell obviously a reference to the Lockless box, meaning it can only be opened by naming.

I think Haliaxes story closely related to Kvothes and also Iax's. All three are about a women they loved. Iax was so enamored with the moon the he trapped part of "her" in his realm, the fea, which killed all hope for peace and started the creation war. Lanre was so obsessed with bringing back his Lyra that he stole or created some power in him that changed his name to Haliax(Breath of Iax) so he could call back Lyra from the doors of death, which failed, dooming him to live eternally without sleep, madness or death to take him away and destroyed the ergen empire for Lanre to be forgotten. Kvothe is very smart but is uncharacteristically short sighted, stupid and ragefull when it comes to the Chandrian who killed his parents. From what we know about Kote, something similar happened with him and his obsession. He has the body of a 20 year old but considers himself to be much, much older. He probably spent a long time in the fea trying to fix what he broke unsuccesfully. There is also the possibility that Iax was the black scaled beast that Lanre slew. Maybe the sword in Kotes inn is not Cinders but Haliaxes. Maybe Kvothe will have a final showdown with Haliax in front of the doors of Stone. Maybe Haliax will do one last good deed by trying to stop Kvothe from oppening the doors of stone and letting the Namers out. WHY you ask? I think this is exactly the reason Rothfuss can't finish the book. Its too big for a single guy. He should give it to Sanderson. He'll have it done in a month.

Wonderful artwork. Each portrays aspects of the characters that fit really well. Even though they're diverse and different, each show part of the character at different times through the stories. Although they're very different none are jarringly unrecognizable and each could illustrate the books. I hope I made my point because they're all beautiful and all of them are recognizable as the characters.

I'm a huge fan of the series, love your videos. Just subbed. I really loved your point about the 4 doors of the mind, I had never drawn that connection. Thank you. What do you think about a theory of mine, that Manet and Elodin are the same person? Elodin asks Kvothe about if a certain number of Spades had been played, holding up the appropriate fingers, how many are left? Manet had asked him this exact question, in the exactly same way when they were playing corners earlier. If Denna's patron is Bredon, who might also be Cinder, it's possible that there is magic that can have someone change their face.

I never heared of that theory before, but that's awesome! There's no way that's just a coincidence, especially in this series. Maybe Elodin is using a Glammourie to change his physical appearance just to troll Kvothe and the rest of the students :)

Glamour be banished, i thought similar thing. Considering elodin doesnt teach any class, it would make sense that someone keeps tabs on the newcomers. Manet being involved so much in kvothes early experience, might be some of the reason elodin sponsors him. would also make sense that the other masters would take advantage of learning bits of what the other masters have to offer in ways of education, might as well since theres not really anywere else they can learn this stuff anyway. But i do say there is something more to this ever burning lamp that kilvin so deeply desires. Makes you wonder at any of the masters motives, amd how they came to be a master at all, in these exclusive arts. Im rather convinced they are either amir or.chandrian. as much as the majority act for what might be the greater good, they themselves seem to be working toward a larger goal, as a group, shrouded in mystery

@@felurianmasters4369 That's a reasonable explanation for why Elodin as we know him seems so absent. I wonder if Elodin isnt actually Manet but has a means of keeping tabs on Kvothe. It seems like the masters almost expect Kvothe to arrive. He seems like such a cool character but idk about Elodin. He gets Kvothe into trouble with breaking into the rooms and also jumping off the building and claims to be trying to teach him to think for himself and not take every word to heart. Later in his naming class he expects his students to do the exact opposite and literally follow everything he says exactly. Is he trying to drive Kvothe mad? Is this the university's way of making sure anyone with naming talent is indoctrinated into strictly following their orders?

Thanks for this video, I love your work, but I'm going to destroy your final theory. We could say that Haliax and his Chandrian want to be forgotten, and that's why they kill everyone who speaks their names. It's seems a reasonable goal. But It's NOT the main goal of Haliax. Let me remind you something. Haliax was hoping that Selitos would join him. Selitos replied: "Destroy the world?". Later, Selitos cursed him. Before all of that, Haliax had a purpose. Do you think Haliax hoped Selitos to help him to be forgotten, or bring Lyra back to life, or end his life? No, those purposes has no sense. Selitos doesn't fit into those plans. The purpose of Haliax is destroy the world, as Selitos said. But is a half-truth. Haliax wants to destroy the fae world, not the mortal world. That's why Haliax hoped Selitos (alleged enemy of the shapers) to join him, to destroy the world of their enemies, but Selitos refused to join him. Haliax wants to destroy the root, the sourse of the problem, Selitos do not. What if Selitos is not actually a namer but a shaper? Sorry for the spoiler. P. S: The beast that killed Lanre is not a dracus. It was Iax, some way or another.

@@benjaminjenkins2384 Do you really think that dracus was just a dracus? It is not even a dragon, as the stories tell, it is just a large lizard. If Kvothe was able to kill one in the first book, what makes you think a legendary hero like Lanre would die in front of this one? I mean, seriously? Felurian told us the war between Knowers and Shapers. The greatest shaper who stole the moon was Iax. Where is this great enemy in the history of Skarpi? The unique enemy mentioned was that dracus. The dracus is just a metaphor for the monster Iax has become. Shapers shaped themselves to become more than men, and yet less than man. They become Rhintas. He is just like the demon Encanis, his only regret is that he did not make himself faster to escape Tehlu. Encanis despises all those who are not like him, and feeds on those who are not demons (shaped ones or rhintas). Skarpi said he is not lying but he is not saying all the true because he wants to tell us a good story, so he adds "dragons". We had seen a real dracus already, and they are not the big thing. Trapis is a religious person, he doesn't know what is a shaper so the story says the enemies were "demons". They don't even know how the magic works in this world. Felurian is the best source, but she refuses to answer questions about the Chandrian, but she tell us about the great "shaper" who stole the moon. Adems tell us the same story from their point of view, they know demons do not exist, they are "rhintas", those who shaped themselves. All of these stories are parts of the same story. One single story. If you keep thinking the dracus is a powerful dragon, you had been misleaded so bad.

@@joelhess1436 and you are still not getting the point. There is a third option: he stopped working on the book altogether. You were shown a stack of papers but only saw the page on top. There is no reason to believe it was an actual full copy of the book, you can't even know if he actually gave that to beta readers. Yes, I think he's lying about the book, because I've done my research on it and what I've found all points to him lying. Let's talk about the leaked page, back in 2014 or so, Pat was procastinating by streaming fallout 4 (he has said so himself), he had his viewers vote (by donating) if they wanted to see him play videogames or stare at him writing the book, surprise surprise they voted for the not boring option. "I guess people don't want me to write the book enough hehe". Only once did writing win, but he f9rgot to turn off screensharing, so people got to read a fragment of a page. It was at the very beginning of the book, Kote was waking and and taking note of all the bruises he had from the deserters fight. But people got to see a little more, they saw the files in the folder, and they saw the latest onw hadn't been modified in months. There's screen caps of these, you're gonna have to dig deep on the subreddit and google to find them though. Another example, last year his editor said on fb she has never seen a single word of book 3 and she doesn't believe he has written at all since the the release of Slow Regard of Silent Things, I think his publisher would know better than his fans. Following this, he absolutely stepped off the internet for months, when he came back he actually talked about some spoilers for book 3, something unheard of for him, talking about the furst king of vintas being an undead draugr and stuff. I have to admit, even I got my hopes up with that, but some weeks later he showed his true colours: it all lead to a vintish coin he had made to be sold. A distraction from his previous PR disaster and a shameless cashgrab, what a guy. He stopped talking about it after he sold the coins too. All he does related to book 3 is just to sell you a different product: the sword, the card game, the board game, the coin, the fucking 10 year anniversary edition of both book 1 and 2. It's also been documented (again, it's all there on reddit and twitter, posted years ago) that the charities he hosts are held in a building he owns and charges quite a big sum to use. Not even half of what is raised actually goes to charity. My thought is that he unawarely became a grifter after he realized he could make book 3 work, not after he went off rails in book 2.
