The 2002 Western Conference Finals was basically the real NBA Finals that year. It felt like a movie. Even with the controversy, Lakers-Kings 2002 is still arguably the best and most iconic non-Finals playoff series in NBA history in my opinion. Celtics-Bulls in 2009 is up there too but there was just a certain weight and magnitude to Lakers-Kings 2002.

This beef was bound to happen. Both teams operate in California, one team is pretty much Hollywood’s premier franchise historically while the other has struggled to put together a winning organization. It mostly took one game where almost everyone knew that the NBA wanted the Lakers in the Finals and I really believe that because the officiating was very one-sided in regards to number of fouls and of course we have hearsay from Tim Donaghey who, yes, did commit a crime by throwing games away for the mafia but the simple fact that he had inside knowledge on who the NBA favored should be enough evidence contrary to what the league said at the time. Donaghey may have wanted to bury the league with himself by coming out with all this but that playoff game between the Kings and Lakers was no better proof of the NBA showing favoritism for one team.

Inasmuch we should not believe in lucky charm or superstitions, somehow outcomes speak for itself. Or as cliche goes: If ain't broken, why fix it? Mario Elie didn't like the new unis, looking them like the Harlem Globetrotters. And that old but classic Houston outfit gave them back-to-back Titles, including recovering from 2-3 deficit in 1994 Finals and an improbable 1995 run, so why change? The next year, their new look was concluded by dethronement via sweep by Seattle. Ironically, after years of Playoff disappointment including an upset from 8th-seed Denver, Seattle dons a new outfit that year that made them all the way to the Finals. Same goes to Utah in 1996-97. As for the Kings, that new uniform plus a more deeper and talented bench in 2002-03 would turned out the beginning of the end. CWebb's injury in 2003 WCSF G2 marked the end of his athleticism, and so the Kings' fate. (And pardon the litany.)

My favorite moment of this rivalry/beef is one that doesn't involve anyone on either team. It's when The Rock was singing some songs on an episode of RAW in Sacramento as a part of his Rock Concert and sang this immortal: I can't wait to come back when Lakers beat the Kings in May!

At the end of the day, it puts a significant asterisk on their win. I'm sure Lakers fans don't love hearing that, but it is what it is. Can't roll back the clock.

I remember rooting for the Kings in 2000 & 2001 then once they traded J-Will (my favorite player along with A.I.) I started rooting against them. I was a child so I hated Mike Bibby so much just for being J-Will’s replacement 😂

4. Kobe pretended to be poisoned by local fans because Michael Jordan also once pretended to be poisoned by local fans. (And if the staff at that hotel really did poison Kobe, it might have had nothing to do with basketball - maybe they just wanted to prevent him from raping any of their co-workers. If only he'd been just as incapacitated on that trip to Edwards, Colorado).

Yeah I'm a Lakers fan and I don't buy the poisoned on purpose theory. Kings fans ain't like Celtics fans were back in the day. They'd have done 💩 like that if they thought they could get away with it.

I remember watching the NBA playoffs in 01-02 with my brother. He wasn't interested in the Lakers vs Kings, other than hoping to see LA go down. You'd have needed to wear a football helmet on the floor against Shaq to make it out of those games without brain damage. I remember Vlade getting fouled out when he reached for the ball and kind of fell down, sort of on a guy as 3 dudes all reached for the ball while on the ground.aMy brother didn't really care about the game and spent a lot of time saying he thought Vlade was being kind of a drama queen and a bit of a pansy, but when they called that foul he jumped off his bed, threw his hands in the air, and shouted, "WHAT???????" It was the most high pitched noise I have ever heard come out of a human's mouth, only matched by 1 occasion where Boston came back to beat New Jersey in a post season game that marked the biggest comeback in NBA Postseason history at the time. Those Lakers vs Kings games were crazy. It's basically the only point in my life were I've ever been interested in basketball.

I was born in 1991 and was at my peak of Kings and basketball fandom as whole during this time. I even had some Weber signatures and everything. I couldn’t completely understand what was going on during that game, but it made me so upset that I really didn’t watch basketball again until a few years ago. It took De’Aaron Fox to recapture my attention and start following the NBA for real again.

Most exciting years as a Lakers fan. I was actually able to watch a couple of Lakers-Kings games at Staples Center. Intense games. Electric atmosphere. Still remember Shaq mocking them as "The Queens". And Robert Horry broke the hearts of Kings fans 💔. And the Fox-Christie altercation was epic.

I'm pretty impressed that the food poisoning came up. mane forgot that. C-Webb's offensive foul (not called) on Fish in the final minute of Game 5 of the 02' WCF should have had more attention. The Kings (especially Vlade) flopping was a huge story at the time and got forgotten over the years somehow. They would have been worth mentioning here for what's important to this story but even so...good vid.

Another very interesting and funny Beef History video by Secret Base! 👍👍 But during the video, Clara Morris was showing a pic of Rick Adelman that could pass off as a Renaissance painting. You can say the same thing about that pic of Chris Webber that was shown before Clara’s farewell speech at the end of the video. That sad look on poor C-Webb’s face? I can imagine a painted version of that pic hanging in an art museum somewhere…and who knows? Maybe someday it will.

The whole cowbell thing was in response to (or at least ballooned in response to) Phil Jackson referring to Sacramento as a "cow town". The Kings fans took that and ran with it, and apparently got under his skin just a bit. :)
