The 2002 Western Conference Finals was basically the real NBA Finals that year. It felt like a movie. Even with the controversy, Lakers-Kings 2002 is still arguably the best and most iconic non-Finals playoff series in NBA history in my opinion. This beef was bound to happen. Both teams operate in California, one team is pretty much Hollywood’s premier franchise historically while the other has struggled to put together a winning organization. It mostly took one game where almost everyone knew that the NBA wanted the Lakers in the Finals and I really believe that because the officiating was very one-sided in regards to number of fouls and of course we have hearsay from Tim Donaghey who, yes, did commit a crime by throwing games away for the mafia but the simple fact that he had inside knowledge on who the NBA favored should be enough evidence contrary to what the league said at the time. Donaghey may have wanted to bury the league with himself by coming out with all this but that playoff game between the Kings and Lakers was no better proof of the NBA showing favoritism for one team.

Inasmuch we should not believe in lucky charm or superstitions, somehow outcomes speak for itself. Or as cliche goes: If ain't broken, why fix it? And that old but classic Houston outfit gave them back-to-back Titles, including recovering from 2-3 deficit in 1994 Finals and an improbable 1995 run, so why change? The next year, their new look was concluded by dethronement via sweep by Seattle. Ironically, after years of Playoff disappointment including an upset from 8th-seed Denver, Seattle dons a new outfit that year that made them all the way to the Finals. Same goes to Utah in 1996-97. As for the Kings, that new uniform plus a more deeper and talented bench in 2002-03 would turned out the beginning of the end. CWebb's injury in 2003 WCSF G2 marked the end of his athleticism, and so the Kings' fate. (And pardon the litany.)

Most exciting years as a Lakers fan. I was actually able to watch a couple of Lakers-Kings games at Staples Center. Intense games. Electric atmosphere. Still remember Shaq mocking them as "The Queens". And Robert Horry broke the hearts of Kings fans 💔. And the Fox-Christie altercation was epic.

I'm pretty impressed that the food poisoning came up. mane forgot that. C-Webb's offensive foul (not called) on Fish in the final minute of Game 5 of the 02' WCF should have had more attention. The Kings (especially Vlade) flopping was a huge story at the time and got forgotten over the years somehow. They would have been worth mentioning here for what's important to this story but even so...good vid.

Of course not because this goes against the narrative that the refs were 100% on the Lakers side.

Another very interesting and funny Beef History video by Secret Base! 👍👍 But during the video, Clara Morris was showing a pic of Rick Adelman that could pass off as a Renaissance painting. You can say the same thing about that pic of Chris Webber that was shown before Clara’s farewell speech at the end of the video. That sad look on poor C-Webb’s face? I can imagine a painted version of that pic hanging in an art museum somewhere…and who knows? Maybe someday it will.

The whole cowbell thing was in response to (or at least ballooned in response to) Phil Jackson referring to Sacramento as a "cow town". The Kings fans took that and ran with it, and apparently got under his skin just a bit. :)

These videos are so good. And this narrator is the best. Just 10/10 on the tone.

getting poisoned is the second worst thing that can happen to someone in Kobe Bryant's hotel room

If I missed it I’m sorry but I believe in option 5. Kobe did it to set up a jordan flu game “ narrative cause he was so obsessed with passing him as the goat. And I’m not hating on him. This level of obsession is what made him a top 5-10 player of all time

I doubt it. Kobe was 23 and gave into temptation to have a cheeseburger and a cheese cake.

I’ve eaten a hotel cheeseburger in Sacramento. I don’t think they can give that one to sabotage… I think that’s the price you pay for ordering a hotel burger in Sacramento.
