The slow, almost gothic melody in A Dark Horizontal and the slow intro to Relentless Mutation elevate the whole damn album so much. Also the breaks in Drone Corpse Aviator. Every slowdown in an Archspire song is like fuggin candy.

Using the prototype model of categorization for understanding genres is actually quite brilliant. Classifying bands based on their comparison to one iconic or defining band of that genre actually makes the distinction tangible.

This is a really interesting interview. I fully agree that the frontman makes the difference; no offense to Dean and Tobi but every tech death band out there is a blistering riff machine. What sets Archspire head and shoulders above the pack is Ollie's unique and dynamic vocals. After watching this interview, I see it's also the band's work ethic and personal standards that make a difference. Stay tech!

Dean's comments on the hook is entirely the IT factor that makes the great Death Metal bands. And that is what made Origin and Necrophagist the gods that they are, Origin with somehow making sweep picking and other methods of arpeggios be riffs that are some how catchy and almost hummable, and Necrophagist with making essentially Mozart with brutality mixed in and again somehow catchy.

Wow, I think this is one of the best interesting interviews you have had yet! The conversation went to so many places of interest, and some of the things said I resonated so much with that it was almost healing to hear it put into words. That whole thing about the high standards that some people have. I feel somewhat misunderstood in my band in that regard. More and more my bandmates understand where I'm coming from. For me, if what I'm doing isn't potentially really great so that I'd eagerly listen to it, then what's the point in even doing it? There's enough mediocrity going around already, I don't need to pollute the airwaves with more half-baked shit. And not being fully understood in this regard can get frustrating, so it was very affirming to hear you guys talking about this topic

28:48 my friend back in the day was brought to tears by cradle of filths 13 autums a widow.....just how the base kicks accent the song. There is a song by slice the cake where the very first chord gets me because it sets the entire context of the song and i am emotionally attached to the song. Flesh god apocalypse, epilogue. The second the cello solo starts its just so gripping. But yea streight tech death has a very difficult challenge in making it emotional.

Great interview Finn! Two thoughts - as far as the “when is it done” idea, I think it’s having the eye of an artist in whatever the subject matter is. My wife is a painter, and she can immediately tell if her piece (or someone else’s) is “done” or not… and I cannot. Similar to barbering, editing, or any other form of creation. Secondly, I think one of the reasons that Dean and Claire have such great success with their videos together is because people like seeing people in happy relationships. It’s hard to capture that in a chill, fun, and informative way especially in such niche sub genre.

Duuuude!!! I really dig Archspire!! Had never heard of the band before, but I checked it out after this amazing interview, especially what Dean said about him having "barely touched" that little special thing he feels when listening to certain classical pieces (very much a lover of e.g. Bach myself). I really like you guys' musicality! Also the production feels a little lighter than what I hear whenever I dip my toes into the modern metal pool (e.g. Periphery, Slaughter to Prevail, Wage War). Most of what I hear in said pool feels overly pumped on steroids, snare drum sound too massive, I get ear fatigue very quickly. Not with you guys. Probably a mixture of good mixing, good composition and more pleasant tones chosen. Hats off!! And what's more: I just played your music in the car while on a trip with my 70-yo mom. Medium loud in the background, so we could still comfortably talk over it, but also didn't have to strain to make out what's going on in the music. And after some minutes her ears perked up and she asked me what music that was. She also found it pleasant. I am proud to say that my mom is a very musically talented person, much talent that just never got developed. But it shows in moments like this 😀 It also helps that I trained her well when I still lived with her, by expanding her boundaries of acceptance through regular exposure to such acts as SOAD, Slipknot, Opeth, Dir en grey, Mucc, Scar Symmetry and so forth. So she can take quite the aural beating by now 😂 And she is by no means a metalhead. She just likes anything with high musicality. Cheers Archspire, and thanks, Finn, for the interview and the subsequent exposure 😊

In response to the comment about the sparsity in Lorna Shore's music: Dean is totally right. I just saw them live and, aside from Will's vocals, the thing that stood out the most was when the only thing happening musically was a snare hit. Everything else cut out, they'd have a snare hit in one of those suuuuper slow breakdowns, and it reverberated throughout the theater like nothing else.
