Ray Davies wrote this nostalgic song about his older sisters, who loved to dance. The song describes how guys would take them out dancing, only to be frustrated at the end of the night when all they would get for their efforts (and money) was a kiss on the cheek. Davies had six older sisters (and one younger brother: his Kinks bandmate Dave). For years, Ray said that the specific sister this song is about was Gwen, who was the sixth sister and seven years older than him (this fits the timeline, as a young Ray would have seen Gwen going out dancing and then sending off her dates). He later claimed that the sister in the song was Rene, who was 18 years older. According to Davies, Rene married a Canadian soldier and moved with him to Canada. He says is was an abusive and unhappy marriage, and Rene would often return to the childhood home in Muswell Hill for visits. One of these visits took place in 1957 when Ray turned 13. For his birthday, Rene bought him his first guitar: a Spanish guitar he wanted. That night, she went dancing at the Lyceum Ballroom in London. Rene had rheumatic fever when she was young, and her heart was weak. That night, she suffered a heart attack and died at the ballroom. Twenty-five years later, Ray wrote this song to memorialize her and remember her love of dancing. (Songfacts.com)

Ray and Dave Davies were the two youngest in their family following about 6 older sisters. While this honors all of his sisters it particularly focuses on Renee whom he was closest in age to. In the last verse he hints that the sister in present day now waits for her own daughter to come home as her mother did for her. However this wasn’t the case, this is symbolized as the young woman is dancing in a halo light or ghost light. In reality Renee who was visiting from Canada gave her then 13 year old brother Ray his first guitar as a birthday gift. That evening because of a weakened heart condition from a childhood illness ,she suffered a heart attack and sadly died. This song is a memorial to her.

this song was written by Ray Davies. it was dedicated to his sister who was born with a heart defect that with any prolonged activities would cause her to have a heart attack. one day she got dressed and went to go dancing at the local dance hall knowing that this would cause a strain on her heart. she died on the dance floor getting a chance to do the one thing she loved.

"Come Dancing" is a tribute to the Davies' older sister Rene. Living in Canada with her reportedly abusive husband, the 31-year-old Rene was visiting her childhood home in Fortis Green at the time of Ray Davies' 13th birthday - 21 June 1957 - on which she surprised him with a gift of the Spanish guitar he had tried to persuade his parents to buy him. That evening, Rene, who had a weak heart as a result of a childhood bout of rheumatic fever, suffered a fatal heart attack while dancing at the Lyceum ballroom. "[Rene] had died dancing in a ballroom in London in the arms of a stranger. Coming back from Canada where she'd emigrated [from the UK] to die, really, and again, being a source of inspiration. She gave me my first guitar, which was quite a great parting gift." - Ray Davies Ray later said that the song was an attempt to return to the "warmer" style they had prior to their transformation to an arena rock act, explaining, "I wanted to regain some of the warmth I thought we'd lost, doing those stadium tours. 'Come Dancing' was an attempt to get back to roots, about my sisters' memories of dancing in the 50s."

The story is true. Really popular in the 30's through 40's, the big dance halls (in UK) got hammered by TV... people were not going out as much in the late 50's (at home watching whatever) so money dropped - and the big dance halls folded. So sad, taking away many places to meet up and have fun.

Man, this brings back sssooo many memories. Me and my friends would go out to the clubs in LA and dance the night away with whatever girl we could get out on the dance floor. The 80’s were such a great time for a guy in his early twenties. You were born to late Lex. You would have loved it. Funny how we reflect on things. I always looked back on the 50’s and wished I grew up in that decade with all that great music and culture. But then the 80’s came and I got to experience my own music and culture. And now there’s a generation that wishes they grew up back when I did. Was it as much fun as you think it was? You bet it was🎉

No doubt in my mind Lex was going to like this one. It's my ole ladies favorite Kinks song. There is an incredibly important riff in the song. When they say " The day they knocked down the Pally, my sister stood and cried, the day the knocked down the Pally part of childhood died, just died". It's followed by a rock and roll guitar riff indicating that rock had ended that part of their childhood.

The beautiful thing about the early '80s was that anything went. There was no distinctive "sound" because MTV was soliciting music from any and everyone, so artists had the freedom to promote music free from studio influence. By the mid-eighties executives had locked down the industry once again, and we returned to forumulaic "sounds," ending that brief burst of creativity. I really miss being able to hear Kenny Rogers, the Kinks, Men at Work, and Modern English all playing back to back on a single radio station.

You have to love Lex's reaction to this classic 1983 kinks song that reckons to the big band era of music and the local dance hall he calls the palais (palace) where his 6 older sisters would go out to dance on the weekends. The one he wrote this song for Rene was 18 years older than Ray and had married a Canadian man and moved to the US but the as the relationship became abusive she would return home and on his 13th Bday in 1957 she had given him his first guitar as a gift, later that evening she had gone out dancing at the Lyceum Ballroom in London where she tragically suffered a fatal heart attack and died at the ballroom that night.

Lex, I was stationed on grand turk, in the turk and caicos back in 74, you're right, the steel drum sound of the islands is definitely in this song.

just enjoy this song - back in the day in an era where a date to go dancing at a local "dance palace" as they were often called in the UK (dance halls here) was THE thing to do on a Friday and/or Saturday night. This was the Big Band Era - 40's - 50's.

Pretty they were just called Dance Halls tbh. 'Palace' like 'Palais' in the song is just the name of the venue, like 'The Alhambra' or 'The Hippodrome'.

Palais De Dance. We had a really famous one in Hammersmith and Fulham, The Hammersmith Palais. Resident big band was Joe Loss and his orchestra.

Came for the tune (at age 15), stayed (and kept on listening) for the lyrics, now at 55yo. Every year those lyrics hit harder.

I saw quite a few of Ray Davies's "Storyteller" shows in the '90's and early '00's. I remember he would preface this song by saying that he was excited when he brought it to his manager, thinking it had the potential to be a hit. His manager listened and said something like, "It's a wonderful ditty, Ray. But it's not a hit." So much he knew. I remember when this came out, even my cousins - who wouldn't know good music if it clocked them upside the head - liked this song. I remember he also said he styled himself after the way his father looked for this video.

80's Turks and Caicos is my favorite genre of music, you just can't go wrong. Grew up on that stuff, and still listen to it every day.

One of the Great 4 British bands from the British Invasion - The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and then the Kinks. Ray Davies was one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. And this certainly was not one of his weaker songs.

Palisades Amusement Park, in north Jersey was the Pali. It was paved over, but it was an iconic place to go see music and dance and take your kids to the rides, which my mother went to as a child, so this place was in the 50s and 60s. I also think there was a radio show that took place there with cousin Brucie. It cost $.30 to get in.
