A classic power pop song. The Knack was unfairly maligned and never got the credit they deserved. All you ever hear is My Sharaona but they were not a one hit wonder as this song just missed the top 10. I think their mistake was on the second album they tried to duplicate My Sharona with Baby Talks Dirty and the album was rushed by the record company to capitalize on their success. They also got a lot of backlash because of the "Meet the Beatles" comparison to "Get the Knack". That was unfair to them.

I got this album without knowing anything about it. At my Catholic primary school we had a magazine selling scheme and you'd get to select prizes. I always went for music albums. This was before cable and MTV hit my home town. The cover of Get the Knack reminded me of Meet the Beatles. At that time, I mostly listened to my mom's records from the50s and 60s. I still remember putting this on and continually listening to it thinking, this is nothing like Meet the Beatles. Being a Catholic girl, this was my favorite song even though I wasn't exactly sure what it meant. I just knew it wasn't what my teachers would like and that gave me delight. I was still officially a good girl for another decade, but I could live through music.

Absolutely agree with the comment about the guys being average shmoes... I met them right about this time in LA. They were playing and a couple friends and I waited out by the bus to get our 30 seconds of their time, and they absolutely gave it to us. My guys and I told them we were putting a band together, and they took a few minutes to give a bunch of 13 and 14 year olds support and advice ("don't ever let anyone tell you no"). I had a chance to open for them as a bassist on their last tour and were permitted a meet and greet (which most bands don't do for opening acts), and I spent almost 20 minutes with Prescott talking equipment, technique, and just general chat. I know he was tired, and wanted to get back to the hotel, but he (and the rest) actually hung out and gave us time when we could do nothing for them.

OK all you mid 40's-50 people, if you could go back in time to relive the 80's, BUT you would lose 15 to 20 years of your life, would you it??? The 80's were a unique and amazing decade. The music! The parties! The dances! The friends (many of which you still have 30 years later). Even the movies (ET, The Breakfast Club, Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Dirty Dancing ("Nobody puts Baby in the corner!")!! Now that you know that the worst that can happen to you is to be grounded for a week or two, would you have done more than you did the first time?? I gotta say YES to both questions. Many of us want to get back to the big hair, the leg warmers, and the jean jackets! The 80's were the last decade that, as a kid, we could stay out until dark, safely go into neighbors houses, and there was no reason to get out of bed if you fell asleep and forgot to lock the front door. We didn't have XBox or Wees, or cell phones. If we had a day of technological gaming, it was playing Frogger or Pong! We were totally happy playing hide and seek or Cowboys and Indians (I'm part Native American, though being an Indian never bothered me) and we never heard of being PC. We made complex tunnels in the snow banks, used ropes to swing 5 or 6 kids at a time 20 to 40 feet in the air (and we all lived when we fell off!), and fed marshmallows to raccoons from the back door steps. Some of us with a lot of patience even taught chipmunks to eat nuts out of our hands or on our shoulders. Life was easier, and a hell of a lot more fun than any kid has today. Why? Because we were safe. Children could wander the neighborhood, ride our bikes along roadsides, and enjoy running through connected yards sometimes until 9 or 9:30! To put it simply, we were safe. Everyone knew everyone but maybe it was because we could go OUTSIDE (and we preferred it that way)!

+Jason Place Okay; here goes my reply. I'm 51. Yes it was a fun time, but no I would not go back if I could. I have no regrets, and am still doing new things and accomplishing my goals. For one, I no longer need to work so I have plenty of time and resources. As far as the worst thing being grounded for a week or two, well that is just a cheap shot. For most of the 80's I served in the U.S. Air Force and was shot in Honduras and injured in the first Gulf War. Despite that, I loved every minute of my "youth". Thirty years later and guess what? I still manage to listen to great music, go out and party with friends (including new ones I meet) all the time. So if you are ever in Orlando, look me up. I'll bet you the bar tab I can still drink anyone under the table and stay out later than most! I hope you don't take what I just said as an insult or in any way meant to put you down, it's just I here people much, much, much younger than me say they wish they did this or did that, or yadda yadda yadda. In this song he even says: "It's a teenage sadness everyone has got to taste, and between each madness that you know you can't erase". Everyone has their own experiences in life and makes their own decisions. To quote Lester Burnham from a movie in the 90's, "It's never too late to start".

The Knack at the time this was recorded in 1979 (became a hit in early 1980) were being billed as "The Next Beatles." Their album "Get The Knack" was being compared to "Meet The Beatles" (from almost 16 years earlier in early 1964) and they were on Capitol Records (where The Beatles originally were on in the US). This would turn out besides "My Sharona" (#1 song of 1979 & #10 overall for the 1970's) to be their only Top 20 hit as they fizzled quickly after this.

88 Elliott , album lyrics - She's your adolescent dream, Schoolboy stuff, a sticky sweet romance. And she makes you want to scream, Wishing you could get inside her pants. So, you fantasize away. And while you're squeezing her, you thought you heard her saying... "Good girls don't, Good girls don't, Good girls don't, but I do." So, you call her on the phone To talk about the teachers that you hate. And she says she's all alone, And her parents won't be coming home til late. There's a ringing in your brain, Cause you could've sworn you though you heard her saying... "Good girls don't, Good girls don't, Good girls don't, but I do." And it's a teenage sadness Everyone has got to taste. An in-between age madness That you know you can't erase Til she's sitting on your face. You're alone with her at last, And you're waiting til you think the time is right. Cause you've heard she's pretty fast. And you're hoping that she'll give you some tonight. So, you start to make your play, Cause you could've sworn you thought you heard her saying... "Good girls don't, Good girls don't, Good girls don't, but I do." And it's a teenage sadness Everyone has got to taste. An in-between age madness That you know you can't erase Til she's sitting on your face. 'till she's sittin' on your face is the correct version.

Oingo Boingo “Until she’s sitting on your face” appeals to teenage boys and adult males who haven't grown up. At 53, I find the ”Sitting on your face” version silly, boring and a sad attempt to be outrageous on a song that doesn't need that to be great. Before you pat yourself on the back and tell me I’m sensitive, I listened to Howard Stern for 20 years while working in New York. No, I’m not offended, I just grew up.

The same thing happened to Lou Christie with his song "RHAPSODY IN THE RAIN". The line "WE WERE MAKING OUT IN THE RAIN" had to be changed to "WE FELL IN LOVE IN THE RAIN". The line "OUR LOVE WENT MUCH TOO FAR" had to be changed to "LOVE CAME LIKE A FALLING STAR". Likewise, with "GOOD GIRLS DON'T" by the Knack, The line "WISHING YOU COULD GET INSIDE HER PANTS" had to be changed to "WISHING SHE WAS GIVING YOU A CHANCE". The line "TILL SHE'S SITTING ON YOUR FACE" had to be changed to "TILL SHE PUTS YOU IN YOUR PLACE". These songs had to be changed to get played on the radio. Censorship was a lot TOUGHER back then.

So did “(She’s So) Selfish”! But that was - from what I’ve read - only a single in Canada.

It's 2023 now, and this is one of those songs that is just as good now as it was back in 1979.

There’s a funny interview out there with Elliot Easton of the cars. He said the cars were trying to get a number one song but the knack had it at that time and there were Knack life sized cut out figures of the band at record shops in every city they went to. He said Rick Ocasek are used to get so pissed off seeing those cardboard figures of the Knack. So one day the band stole one of them and they put it in bed with Rick while he was sleeping so when he woke up there was the Knack.😄

Perfect teenage pop song, I liked this more than my Sharona in 79 and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t massive.

This was my favourite song of theirs. I guess I had grown a bit tired a My Sharona. But actually, like My Sharona was a song about a crush. A cute girl my first year of secondary school named Lisa my mine. When I saw her, she was singing this song and I said to myself, she's the one!
