GROOVY!! Such a "naughty" song and one of the best bass lines of all time! 🤘🤘🤘 Singer Doug Fieger wrote the lyrics from a teenage boy's point of view, although he was 25 when he met the 17-year old Sharona in real life. He did the same with his song, "Good Girls Don't", which is about a high school boy's desire to get lucky....😍

@Stogie2112

@@stevegreen7706 ... Probably not, Steve. My daughter, if I had one, would only date a good man, one who treats her with respect. In case you haven't read about Doug Fieger and his young girlfriend, they dated for four years and broke up amicably. They even remained friends afterwards.

The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the lyrics to this song, which is about a girl he fancied. Doug was in a long-term relationship when he walked into the clothing store where a high school student named Sharona Alperin (who had a boyfriend), was working. The age difference (he was about eight years older) and relationship status didn't deter Fieger, who was immediately lovestruck. With his girlfriend looking on, he invited Sharona to a show. Not long after, he broke up with the girlfriend and professed his love for Sharona, creating a weird dynamic where he would come on to her even though she had a boyfriend who often attended Knack concerts with her. It got pretty heavy when Fieger started writing songs about her - they weren't together when he composed"My Sharona." About a year after they first met, Sharona gave in and they started dating. She joined the band on tour and watched as the song Fieger wrote about her elevated them to stardom. The couple were together for about four years (and engaged at one point) before the rock and roll lifestyle and Fieger's alcoholism became too much for Sharona, and they called it off. In the aftermath, Sharona answered questions about the breakup by saying that she needed to become her own Sharona, not someone else's. After a cooling off period, Alperin and Fieger became friends. Alperin was with Fieger the last week of his life; he died of cancer on February14, 2010. Source - Songfacts

Hi Bisscute, who could forget Sharona? And I'm not just referring to the song, but to Doug Fieger's muse, his source of inspiration at the time, Sharona Alperin. The lyrics are very direct and focus on the performer's passionate desire for someone evidently younger. It immediately stands out that although the song has a youthful and apparently light charge, the content is clearly impregnated with romantic and sexual desire, desire and obsession, youth and attraction, urgency and emotion, characteristics that coincide with the vibrant musical style of the song. I loved your reaction Bisscute, with a mischievous, playful, carefree attitude, which I think is in keeping with the theme to which you reacted. My suggestion for a next reaction is to the band Grand Funk Railroad, in their performance at Shea Stadium in 1971, performing I'm Your Captain. Greetings and a hug from Mexico City.

@@rowenatulley852 I hate when they do that - replacing "risqué/offensive" lyrics with some watered-down kindergarten crap - especially when it's not even that bad. There's only ONE exception where I prefer the "clean radio edit" (or whatever you wanna call it), and that's Radiohead's Creep, where the f-bomb is removed or replaced by "very". For me, that song is like an anthem, and I don't need the cussing. I can't explain it, but it's kind of unnecessary, and slipping that in just makes it obnoxious and ruins the song. Maybe it was limited to just ONCE, it would have been okay but on every single refrain? It's just pretentious. Save the f-bombs for the ANGRY songs when a good rage is in order. LOL But that's me. I know that NO ONE else will agree.

Definitely a good one, and for once, I might actually recommend the LIVE (at Budokan) version over the studio version. The live version has a bit faster tempo and a little more energy, and the crowd just adds to it. The studio version is good, it just kinda pales after hearing the live version first, as I did.... hence why I always say "do STUDIO FIRST", cos if the live performance is good, it will spoil the original.

This song blasted on the scene in 1979. I was a DJ at CITR UBC radio station. This was the campus radio station of UBC in Vancouver, which played "New Wave & Alternative Rock. Once a song made main stream radio rotation, we stopped playing it. I really liked playing "My Sharona", by the Knack, for the short time I could. It hit main stream radio very quicky and rocketed to the top of the charts. But alas, the Knack were a one hit wonder. My issue with them was that all of their songs sounded the same, especially those on their second album. Not sure if it was the music label or the band that did that, but it doomed "The Knack" to the history books as one of the biggest one hit wonders ever. What I enjoyed about your reaction is that it caused me to do some research about the song and found an interesting back story. When I was younger, I never worried about what the lyrics were saying, or the back story of a song, or even how the members of a band were, even when I was a DJ for a main stream radio station. I was only worried about the sound of the song and the way it made me feel. I realize now that was a failing on my part, but it was what it was. The one thing I know about "My Sharona", it made me want to dance and feel great!

There's nothing particularly bad about a band's songs sounding similar. Just ask AC/DC. They all just have to be bangers in their own right. There's the infamous quote from one of the AC/DC band members about making 11 albums that all sound the same, and he corrected him by saying they made 12 albums that all sound the same. If yer gonna do something, OWN it. They did, and the results speak for themselves.

The Knack had their 1 hit "My Sharona" in 1979... it was remixed and became a hit again in 1994 when it was included in the Winona Ryder movie 'Reality Bites'... Doug Fieger (vocals/ guitar) wrote 'My Sharona' to win over a 17 yr old girl - Sharona Alperin... they became a couple for a while. Doug Fieger passed away in 2010 at age 57. The Knack was partially responsible for the career of Weird Al Yankovic... he recorded a parody of 'My Sharona' ('My Bologna') in 1979 playing the song w/ an accordion... Doug Fieger heard it and loved the spoof - he met w/ Weird Al (who showed up at a Knack concert w/ a big bologna 😂) and Fieger asked The Knack's label Capitol Records to release 'My Bologna' as a single that year. There was a 'power pop' craze in the late 70's/ early 80's that briefly dominated the disco era... artists like The Knack, Pat Benatar, Eddie Money, Loverboy, Billy Squire, The Cars, Blondie, Aldo Nova, etc. had huge hits w/ guitar-oriented songs... Sadly, it didn't last. The early 80's became dominated by synth pop music like Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls, etc.

They did have a second hit from their debut album - Good Girls Don't - which just missed the Top 10. Additionally, the lead single from their second album made a brief appearance on Billboard's Top 40...but it only made it to #38, I believe.

ROFL! I forgot all about that! Ahhh, Cheech & Chong. While I do not condone drugs, those two were too damn funny not to appreciate. My favorite film was The Corsican Brothers cos it had all the filthy raunchy sex and toilet humor, but no drugs. And then there was Canada's answer to Cheech & Chong : MacLean & MacLean. They were even more obscene and filthy and drug-obsessed, if you can imagine that.

The Knack were very big in 1979-80, and were a bit of a throwback to The Beatles' era, sound and style, which also made them accessible to New Wave fans. They were also controversial, due to their "dirty" lyrics and their liberal use of iconic Beatles imagery, eg. the back cover of their first album shows them basically re-enacting the look of The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. My one minor quibble is that the video edits down the epic lead guitar solo, but obviously that was for commercial purposes, ie. getting the song on the radio. The album version is THE version to check out, both for listening and for karaoke. ;-)

ALRIGHT! LOVE "The Knack" This track is off the 1979 Title Album, "Get The Knack". As a teenager, (High-School Freshman), this was one of the first albums I bought with my own money at our local record shop. There are so many wicked, killer songs on that LP. Thanks, Madalina, for taking us on this little trip backward in time to yesteryear. You should check out the other songs on the record. Much peace and all kinds of love to you and the Fam on this channel. Big shoutout from your old, longhaired, hippy dude in the States. See y'all on the next. Later.

The Knack never made it really big, BUT this is the 1st song parodied by Weird Al Yankovic. "My Bologna" was also a hit and Doug Fieger (the lead singer) met Al and got him some connections in the music biz. And the rest is history. A couple of other Knack songs that I really enjoy are "Another Lousy Day in Paradise" and "Hold on Tight and Don't Let Go"
